Class Overview

This year, our ELA standards focus on helping students become sharp readers, analytical thinkers, and confident writers. Here is a quick snapshot of the key skills we are building together:

• Precise Word Choice: Exploring word relationships (synonyms, analogies, multi-meaning words) and choosing exact words to express complex ideas.

• Vocabulary: Introducing morphology in order to increase vocabulary and deduction skills. 

• Shades of Meaning (Connotation vs. Denotation): Understanding how subtle differences in word choices—like confident vs. egotistic—impact tone, mood, and meaning.

• Analyzing Author Purpose & Audience: Unpacking why texts are written, how authors target specific audiences, and how formatting features aid our reading comprehension.

• Mastering Narrative Craft: Analyzing how authors build plots, develop characters, and use techniques like flashbacks and foreshadowing to create suspense, tension, or humor.

• Writing Organized, Multi-Paragraph Texts: Crafting well-structured essays with clear introductions, strong supporting evidence, smooth transitions, and satisfying conclusions.

• Expository Writing Techniques: Using main ideas, key facts, statistics, and formatting tools to inform and engage readers effectively.

• Research & Citation: Gathering reliable evidence across print and digital sources to answer questions and documenting research accurately using MLA format.

• Grammar: Introducing and incorporating complex sentence structure, parts of speech, verbals, and identifying common grammar mistakes in order to avoid them while writing.
