6th Grade

Canned Coke Lesson:

In this lesson the students learned about observation drawing and color matching.

Cardboard Self-Portrait Lesson:

During this lesson, the students learned that they could create a self-portrait on materials other than pencil and paper. They used cardboard to execute this production piece. We spent some time in the computer lab writing an artist statement on their self-portraits as well.

Magazine Bowls:

Recycled art is a popular lesson these days. Each student created bowls made out of folded pieces of magazine paper. In creating these bowls, the class discussed utilitarian art pieces.

Animal Mouths:

We played a game with this lesson. Each student created an animal's mouth of their choice and displayed it on the wall. The other sixth grade class had to guess what animal each student created simply by observing the animals mouth.

Yunomi:

A yunomi is a Japanese Tea Cup. They used small coils to build a 3" tea cup. Each student glazed their own, then we had a tea party.

Flower Planters:

Each student created their own planter. They had to create a slab and add a design to it.

Picasso Inspired Prints:

Picasso had a different perspective of things than a lot of people. The students learned about his way and had to create a "stamp" to make prints from. Picasso was the inspiration for the prints.

Painting With Paper:

Painting with paper is really a collage that is made to look like brush strokes. Each student had to draw a still life drawing then add the correct color "brush strokes" to it.

Impressionism Painting:

The students learned about Monet and the technique that Impressionist used when painting. There was no color mixing prior to putting it on the paper, no broke strokes were used, and each student focused on landscapes.

Historic Home:

We were asked by The Rome Area Heritage Foundation to do an interpretation of historic houses from down town Rome.

7th Grade

Charcoal Shape Lesson:

Students learned the difference between organic and geometric shapes then made the shapes transition from one to another.

Gemstone Lesson:

This lesson was a review for the students from sixth grade science class. They learned how to create value, shadows, and pattern.

Patterned Animal Lesson:

Everyone loves animals! The students chose an animal to draw, but they had to color the animal in using patterns.

Magritte Inspired Room:

As a class we discussed Magritte's artwork. Each student created a room using one-point perspective while adding five objects that seem out of place or odd proportions.

Monster Mugs:

Each student created a mug to resemble a monster. Hand building, scoring, and slipping were the focus here. After the first round in the kiln, the students glazed their mugs. Finally, they added details with acrylic paint.

Burkina Faso Trash Sculpture:

This was a group lesson that introduced the students to a different culture and way of life. Each group had to create a sculpture made from trash then paint the outside to add character. As a class we looked at different architecture from Burkina Faso for inspiration.

African Mask:

Why do people in different cultures wear mask? They learned that as we studied masks from Africa. Each mask had to have certain characteristics and be painted in natural colors that the people would have access to there.

Wooden Emo Eyes:

The drawings were completed on pieces of wood. The students learned that when your emotions change, so does your face. Simply by drawing a slanted line can change the way the entire piece looks.

Inspirational Micrography:

Each student had to chose a celebrity that inspired them. They had to "draw" using verbiage from these people.

Chinese Watercolor Triptych:

These pieces were completed but observing Chinese floral watercolor pieces. Each student did a series of three pieces then pasted them together to create a triptych. They were required to use warm or cool colors through the series.

Aboriginal Map:

Each student had to sketch a map from point A to point B and write out the directions. A series of patterned dots were painted create a map. The final piece looks nonobjective, but when explained, one can follow the directions.

Historic Home:
