Dear Parents,
Please keep this in a safe place and refer to it during the year as needed. We hope this helps to answer some questions you may have about this school year. We are excited to get to know your child and watch them grow this year!
The ABC’s of Mrs. Yarborough’s Second Grade
Attendance- Important learning takes place every day. Good attendance is essential for a successful school year! If your child must be absent, please email me at tyarborough@floydboe.net, as well as our school nurse at kaceyroberson@floydboe.net. Please send a note with your child upon his/her return to school. If your child must be absent for some reason, make-up work will be sent home upon his/her return.
Birthdays- You may send a store bought treat to be shared with classmates during lunch time to celebrate your child’s special day. Please DO NOT send drinks, full sized cakes, candles, or items containing nuts.
Individually packaged Little Debbies work great!
Communication- Positive communication between school and home is key to your child’s success. We want to hear from you! Please never hesitate to email or send a note with your child. We are happy to talk with you about your child’s progress or answer any questions or concerns you may have at any time.

Dismissal- School ends at 2:45 p.m. You must send a note to school if your child is to go home a different way than his/her normal schedule. Please Do Not use email to notify us of any dismissal transportation changes; we are not able to check our messages while teaching. Help us keep your child safe by following these transportation change procedures.
Emergencies- Please make sure to complete all forms and let us know of any address and phone number changes during the year. Please call the office, as well as write a note to your child’s teacher, with any new information.
Folders- A red plastic “Take Home” folder will be used to transport papers back and forth daily. Please check your child’s red folder every day. (Consider giving your second grader the responsibility of “emptying” the red folder in the same spot each night, such as a designated basket.) ☺
Grades- Report cards are sent home at the end of each 9 weeks. You can also see your child’s grades by logging onto PowerSchool.
Grading scale for 2nd grade:
90-100 = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
69 and Below = F
Homework- Please have your child read at least 20 minutes each night for homework. It is also beneficial to practice addition and subtraction math facts with them each night. We will also begin multiplication at the very end of the year!
Information- We will routinely send home important information through “Parent Square” via text and email. If you opt out of this, you may miss some very important information from your child’s teachers!
Just in case you need to contact us…
Contact us through Parent Square.
You can email us at tyarborough@floydboe.net, or averyquarles@floydboe.net. BEST WAY!
Write us a note and place it in your child’s red folder.

Kindness- We encourage kindness in everything we do. By learning to use kind words and caring actions toward others we will become the very best that we can be!
Lunch- School breakfast and lunches are not free this year. However, please fill out a form for free/reduced meals if you have not already done so.
Breakfast price: $1.00/Reduced: no charge
Lunch price: $2.25/Reduced: no charge
Money- At times, your child may need to bring money to school (i.e. lunch account, book orders, etc.). Please put the money in a sealed envelope with your child's name, teacher’s name, and purpose for the money written on the front.
News-You will receive a newsletter at the beginning of each month. It will have an overview of the upcoming month as well as reminders, notes, and information. Please read these to keep up on the latest happenings in our classrooms.
Others and Ourselves- We spend a lot of time in second grade working on building independence and personal responsibility. We also strive for a cooperative learning atmosphere. Students continue to develop social skills and awareness through group and supportive learning.
Positive Behavior Supports- We believe that a strong sense of community and purpose leads to the desire to be a good citizen and participate in learning. Floyd County Schools has behavior policies that you can read, but it comes down to: be respectful, be responsible, and be safe! BE THE BEST YOU!
Quizzes and Tests- Each week will bring opportunities to show what we know.
*Math quizzes vary, depending on when each topic in math is completed.
Reading- Students are expected to read at home every night (at least 20 minutes) as part of their nightly homework. We will have in class reading opportunities each day. Students will also read and take quizzes online.
Specials- Your child is scheduled for Specials (Encore) every day. Please be sure that your child wears gym shoes and comfortable clothes on PE days. Our Encore classes are Music, Art, PE, and Media, which rotates in an ABCD pattern. Your child will quickly learn which days are PE days!
Transportation- For your child’s safety it is school policy that we MUST send your child home according to the office records. If there is a change to how your child will be going home, please send a written note or a ParentSquare message .For a dismissal change I CANNOT accept a verbal notice from your child or an email. Thank you for your help in this matter.
YoU are an important part of our classroom! Parents make all the difference in a child’s success. Please feel free to contact us with comments, questions, or advice about your child. YOU know your child best!
Volunteers- We love volunteers! Please be on the lookout for communication from us about ways you can help out our class!
Weather- It is a good idea to send a light sweater or jacket for your child to keep at school in case they get chilly in the classroom.
Water- You can send your child to school every day with a closeable and refillable water bottle, with your child’s name on it. Water ONLY please.
I am very eXcited to work with You and Your child this year! Make sure he or she gets plenty of Zzzz's each night because we have exciting things planned for this year!
