"Science is not a subject you took in school. It's life. We are wrapped by it, in it, with it." Neil deGrasse Tyson
"If you would understand anything, observe its beginning and its development." Aristotle
Have a look around to discover some of the things that go on in my classroom. I have sample lessons and activities as well as student work samples so you can get an idea of what we do each day in class. Science class should get students involved in meaningful activities related to real world scenarios such as building electromagnets, testing/reducing friction on surfaces, how light reacts to different lenses, how sound waves travel through different materials, etc. Scientists aren't passive researchers and learning about science shouldn't be a passive process either. For example, students should not just read about science, but learn how to read, act, and investigate like scientists. Learning how to "act" like scientists through observation, measuring, experimenting, communicating, and presenting data; not just reading about science, increases a student's interest. This will lead to a better understanding of not only what happened, but how and why it happened.
Science also should be multi-faceted. It should include researching relevant topics, reading related literature, writing about experiences, drawing detailed illustrations, and working hands-on in labs. Students need to see that science is involved in the things they do everyday. It isn't just something they read about in a book or online, but it is meaningful to their daily lives.
