Flutes: a microfiber cleaning cloth and cleaning rod. These can be purchased online or through Gadsden music at a very low cost. When cleaning your instrument, please only use a dry microfiber cloth. Liquids will damage the pads on the instrument, which can cost hundreds of $$$ to repair!

“PLAYABLE REEDS” – A DEFINITION
No chips, cracks, warps, lipstick residue, lollipop/candy residue, etc.
Tip is flat and rounded, just as it was when it was brand new
Cane Reeds…DO NOT purchase plastic, fibercane, or novelty reeds. Flavored reeds and others can destroy your instrument (your investment!... $$$)
It is HIGHLY recommended to purchase a Reed Guard/Case when renting your instrument, or online. They can be found on Amazon for around $5. These help your reeds to last longer, protect from chipping, warping, breaking, etc.
Reed Rotation: It is suggested that students rotate through their reeds. Having 3-4 in a rotating daily basis will ensure that each reed lasts longer, and you are not having to replace as many reeds at once. (The reed guard/case mentioned above will help in this.)

The following are the Reed brand and size(s) that are recommended by grade level/band. A limited number of reeds are available for purchase in the CHS Band room, however the most cost efficient way to purchase reeds is in bulk boxes.

Instrument Care: we will discuss basic instrument care during class time. It is important to alway keep your instrument dry and maintained.
Flute: keep instrument swabbed free of moisture, do not put added pressure on the keys (FRAGILE!)
Clarinet and Saxophone: Keep all corks greased, do not try too hard to put the instrument together. If you notice that it does not want to assemble, see Mr. McDonald. Try to add some more grease to the cork (sometimes it takes a while to absorb). Keep the instrument swabbed and free of moisture.
PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT! KEEP YOUR INSTRUMENT IN GOOD CONDITION!
Gadsden Music sells care kits for all instruments through their website or over the phone. Another brand of care kit are the "Monster Oil" kits. They are a great quality brand made by professional musicians, for musicians. They can be found on Amazon or their own website. They have videos detailing what comes in the kit, as well as how to maintain your instrument. These will be linked below:
