Classes in this pathway will provide students with an opportunity to learn and acquire skills in food choices for optimal health for a lifetime.
Science is integrated into the pathway and creates the potential for the final two courses to earn a fourth science credit. Students discuss the basic chemistry concepts of food science and evaluate the effects of processing, preparation, and storage on foods' quality, safety, wholesomeness, and nutritive value.
Students may look for a career as a food scientist, nutritional consultant, food quality control, test kitchen, or food preparation facility. This pathway culminates with an opportunity for students to take the National Restaurant Association’s end-of-pathway assessment and potentially earn ServSafe certification.
Expectations for all students are to learn every day and to have fun! Full participation, respect for all, and your best every day are necessary.

I love teaching Nutrition to students and helping them experience cooking in the food lab and learning basic life skills, and wish to instill a desire to make some lifelong changes in their lifestyle. I look forward to another exciting year at PHS!

What if I miss a cooking lab? Due to constraints, no make-up cooking labs will be made. However, an alternate assignment will be given should you like to make up the missing grade.
Are warm-ups (daily openings) mandatory? Yes! Warm-ups count as a weekly grade. Failure to do these may result in you not being able to participate in labs.
What is ServSafe? Must I take the test? ServSafe is a national certification administered by the National Restaurant Association. This test is given towards the end of the third class in the Pathway, Food Science. Every student will take the test for a grade. Upon passing you will be ServSafe Certified!
