I truly believe students are more than a test score. However, test scores often are a reflection of effort. If you don’t put forth effort, you will not score well. And whether we like it or not, Algebra is has an EOC (End of Course) Test that is required by every student taking Algebra and is worth 20% of the student's overall grade.
If you don't practice, you can't play. I say that all the time. Whether playing sports, gaming, music, or math, if a student doesn't practice, he won't be successful. In math, practice doesn't necessarily mean doing extra, but it does mean putting forth the effort to do the assigned task. To practice effectively in math, a student should always show his work. This allows the teacher to follow the student's thought process and help diagnose mistakes, if applicable. We will make plenty of mistakes in math class, and that is okay! Mistakes are expected; it's how we learn from our mistakes that make us better mathematicians.
At some point during the school year, most students will struggle with a standard or even a unit. Just because the student is struggling does not mean he is failing. Growth comes from continuous effort and struggle. As long as the student does not give up, continues to put forth effort, and communicates with Ms. Beggs, success will be had!
