Everything we do in ESOL is guided by WIDA (World-class Instructional Design and Assessment)

 https://wida.wisc.edu/

When a new student comes to Coosa High School, we determine if the student needs to be screened for English. If yes, we screen them and his level of English proficiency is established in the 4 domains of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The ESOL teachers along the student's academic teachers then work together to ensure progress in subject content while broadening their knowledge of English.

The annual ACCESS test is given shortly after the beginning of the new calendar year. Once the test is scored, we look at the student's score and compare them with either their screener scores or the previous year's scores. From there we can start to assess and plan for the following academic year.

We highly encourage students in the ESOL program to speak as much English as possible at school, at home, in social circles and when they are out and about. During the summer students can watch many YouTube videos to continue learning English.

Through research, WIDA has determined that students should be able test out the ESOL program after seven years.
