Description:
ESOL Communication Skills course addresses the language requirements for content courses in grade classes.
The areas of study are:
1. Social and academic language for school success.
2. Group and pair work for language progression.
3. English grammar, vocabulary, and language structures.
4. Language skills and subskills of listening, reading, speaking, writing, vocabulary, grammar, spelling,
pronunciation, punctuation.
Course Format:
The course includes lecture, individual discussions, class discussions, group work, and pair work. Students are expected to complete reading projects, writing projects, and multimedia presentations.
1. Evaluation/Testing
a. There will be objective tests based on lectures and texts.
b. There will be a final project at the end of the semester.
c. Grading will consist of daily assignments, tests, and essays.

Students will complete and present PowerPoint presentations over areas covered in class. Presentations will include academic language and topics.
Classroom Procedures:
Additional Help: Students can get extra help by appointment before and after school, and on club days.
Parent Conferences: Available by appointment.
Make Up Work for Absences: Students are responsible for getting make-up work from the teacher following absences including notes from that day. Students need to contact the teacher at the beginning of the class the day following the absence. Students have three days to get their assigned work. After this time period the grade will remain a zero.
Late Work: Assignments turned in late will be accepted with a penalty.
Assessment Procedures: Quizzes will be given almost daily. Tests will be given at the end of each study unit. Tests include essays. Projects will count as test grades.
Discipline Procedure:
1st Offense - Student Warning
2nd Offense - Conference with student
3rd Offense - Parent Contact
4th Offense - Detention before or after school
5th Offense - Discipline Referral to Administration
Additional Items:
1. No cell phones out during class.
2. No food or drink in class.
3. No sleeping in class.
4. No gum in class.
