How are we planning for the New Curriculum for Wales?
The Curriculum in Wales in changing and a new curriculum will be in place from September 2022. Here at Pengam Primary School we are already beginning to implement trial and explore the new curriculum. We are beginning to:
Embed and raise the profile of the Four Core Purposes of the new curriculum.
Create Area of Learning and Experience Teams led by senior staff.
Undertake professional development and allocate new roles to staff.
Design, create and explore a local curriculum suitable for our children.
Embed Growth Mindset principles.
Collaborate with Pioneer Schools.
How is the New Curriculum for Wales organised?
Subjects will be grouped into six Areas of Learning and Experience but this doesn’t mean an end to traditional subjects. For example, in the Humanities Area of Learning and Experience, History will still be taught but perhaps with broader context by comparing its religious and societal impact to events happening today.
The six Areas of Learning and Experience are:
Expressive Arts
Health and Well-being
Humanities
Languages, Literacy and Communication
Mathematics and Numeracy
Science and Technology
There will also be changes to improve how we assess children and young people in education, support children with additional learning needs and teacher and practitioner training and accountability. These improvements will complement the new curriculum.
Pupil voice will play a vital role within all AOLEs and pupils will have choice and make decisions on how they learn the curriculum.
Growth Mindset principles as well as physical and outdoor learning will take place throughout each theme and AOLE. The “Four Purposes” is the Foundation of the curriculum and inbuilt into each theme and AOLE

The Four Purposes
Everything that is taught and learnt at school will have these 4 core purposes as starting points when staff plan for the enriched learning experiences that pupils will receive. Our pupils are at the heart of reshaping our curriculum. Their voice guides us in our decision making and influences learning. The four purposes will be at the heart of our new curriculum.
They will be the starting point for all decisions on the content and experiences developed as part of the curriculum to support our children and young people to be:
Ambitious Capable Learners;
Ethical, informed citizens;
Enterprising, Creative Contributors;
Healthy, Confident Individuals.
Healthy Haf
Ethical Efan
Ambitious Aled
Enterprising Enfys
