Therapist, parent, and spiritual director, Jennifer Mannino, learned about Matthew LaBanca's story and Off-Broadway show through Without Exception. Without Exception is a large network of Catholic Educators that was founded to address the concerns our educators and administrators have for addressing the many challenges that can arise for LGBTQ+ students and teachers in Catholic schools and adjacent spaces. Almost immediately she was in contact with her friend and colleague, Portland Creative Laureate, Joaquin Lopez to determine a way to bring LaBanca's "Communion" to Portland, Oregon for our Catholic LGBTQ+ people and allies in our community. Joaquin reached out to Fr. Jim Galluzzo a dear friend, priest, and founder of Diversity as Gift, the active outreach arm of the Urban Spirituality Center in downtown Portland where Jennifer and Joaquin met during training with Fr. Jim and his remarkable team.
We are ever thankful to our Promoting Partners who have generously come along side us to bolster this event and help us bring Matthew LaBanca's "Communion" to our city!
