Frequently Asked Questions
Did the Freeway League move away from dual meets? If so, what format are they now using?
The Freeway League did move away from dual meets. Starting this year in league competition, each school will compete in one tri-meet and two quad-meets before prelims and finals. The tri-meet will act as a showcase where athletes can qualify for prelims. The quad meets will be scored; in addition to athletes competing to qualify for prelims.
How are track meets scored?
Like it's stated above, this year the freeway league will compete in tri-meets and quad-meets. However, within these meets each team will actually be competing against each team separately. Although you will see four different teams on the track, each team is actually competing in 3 dual meets.
Competitors earn 5 points for finishing first in an event, 3 points for finishing second and 1 point for finishing third. The team with the most points after all 15 events are scored, wins!
How many events are scored?
There are 15 scoring events in the freeway league. They include:
3200m, 1600m, 800m, 400m, 200m, 100m, Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, 100m/110m Hurdles, 300m Hurdles, Shot Put, Discus, 4x100m Relay, 4x400m Relay. We do not score the pole vault.
Is it possible for me to both see my son or daughter's time and know what the score of the meet is?
YES!!! Finished Results is the timing company we use to time and score our meets. You can follow the score of the meet and see times soon after each race finishes using their app. Field Events, like jumps and throws, take longer to update to the app.
How many events can each athlete compete?
Each athlete can compete in no more than 4 events.
How many competitive levels are in the Freeway League?
Freeway League athletes can compete in either the Varsity or Frosh/Soph level. Freshmen and sophomores can compete at the varsity or frosh/soph level, but juniors and seniors can only compete at the varsity level. Athletes cannot run in different levels during the same meet.
How does my son or daughter earn a spot in the Freeway League Prelims at the end of the season.
An athlete needs to finish in the top 3 of an event in order to qualify for prelims in that event. If an athlete qualifies at the varsity level in an event, he/she automatically qualifies for the same event at the F/S level. An athlete can qualify in up to 4 events.
Is there a certain order the events are run?
Yes there is. The Freeway League recently adopted the CIF Order of Events. These can be found and downloaded from the "Order of Events" page on this website.
How does my son or daughter earn a varsity letter in track?
To earn a varsity letter, an athlete must score at least one point in a varsity event or compete in all but one varsity meet during a single season. Therefore, an athlete can earn a varsity letter without scoring a varsity point.
