Five Town Camden-Rockport School District is committed to providing supportive and effective English as a Second Language (MLL) to its Multilingual Learners (MLLs) and their families. The term "multilingual learner" highlights students' abilities to speak multiple languages and recognizes the assets and knowledge of students who speak more than one language: Our program aims to help students become proficient in English and make classroom content more accessible.
Yes, the term for English learners (ELL) in Maine has changed to multilingual learners (ML): The term change was made to honor and celebrate the languages spoken by Maine students. The term "multilingual learner" recognizes the knowledge and linguistic capital of all students who use English as an additional language.
Multilingual learners (MLL) in the Five Town Camden-Rockport School district in grades K-12 participate in the ACCESS language proficiency test. ACCESS provides a standardized measurement of academic language proficiency for MLL students throughout Maine and other states. With this information, we qualify support time and monitor individual student progress annually.
