MOTIVATION
Our motivation is to create an optimum design of the intake system that will bring benefits in terms of volumetric efficiency and increased power levels of the engine and an overall increase of the the PM22 car performance for the 2022 FSAE competition. We are striving to help Panther Motorsports for reach their goal of top 40 in the competition and bring pride to the FIU engineering campus while also putting our acquired knowledge and ideas to test and create an optimal intake system for the team.
The FIU Formula SAE team Panther Motorsports started with their first car in 2015 and have steadily advanced the cars performance and design throughout the year. The team helps foster a diverse team of student engineers to apply their knowledge and creativity to real world designs and applications.
The Formula SAEĀ® series competitions challenge teams of university undergraduate and graduate students to conceive, design, fabricate, develop, and compete with small, formula-style vehicles. The competitions give teams the chance to demonstrate and prove both their creativity and engineering skills in comparison to teams from other universities around the world. [6]
PROBLEM STATEMENT
To design and manufacture an intake manifold for the Kawasaki Ninja 650 cc engine currently used by Panther Motorsports, following the Formula SAE restrictions guidelines. A restricted flow volumetric efficiency as close as an unrestricted flow is preferred to be attained. As well as, engine resiliency while undergoing thermal cycles and heat exposure must be ensured.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
Functionality
Create and provide a complete intake design that satisfies all FSAE technical regulation to complete technical inspection on the first attempt.
Maximize Performance
Reach at least 80% of the stock Kawasaki 650 cc engine power with new intake design and restrictor.
Durability
Durable intake design that last the duration of the competition and testing phase of the FSAE vehicle.
We will strive to meet the objectives of our project, while keeping in mind a fourth objective that aligns with the FSAE mission:
Global Impact
Push the boundaries of creativity and innovation in the automobile industry and provide students from around the globe to showcase their knowledge and skills.
The table below breaks down our primary objectives and shows how we ensure our that each of them are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
Preliminary research on intake design and FSAE regulations and guidelines has been conducted by the team in order to achieve a stronger foundation for the upcoming designing phase starting in early October. The team has also met with the primary stake holder, Panther Motorsports, to asses the constraints of the car for the intake mounting process and to familiarize with the vehicle. In addition engine parts such as the throttle body, gasket mount seal , and fuel injector housing have been sent out for a 3-D scan to ensure accurate CAD files to assist with the design and mounting process of the intake system.
