FOUNDATION OF CARE AND TRAINING BASICS
Providing your new dog with proper care and training is the foundation of a happy and healthy relationship. These tips will help you meet your dog’s needs while teaching them important life skills. By understanding your dog’s needs and teaching them basic skills, you’re creating a strong bond and setting the stage for a lifetime of happiness together. Consistency, patience, and love are the keys to success!
At Fishy's Friends Rescue, we believe that setting up our adopters—and their new best fur-iends—for success is just as important as finding the right match. That’s why we’ve partnered with Southwest Oklahoma K9 Academy (SWOKK9), a locally owned, hands-on dog training facility committed to changing lives one paw at a time.
Led by a passionate, certified trainer who pours her heart into every pup she meets, SWOKK9 offers real-life, relationship-based training that goes far beyond sit and stay. From bouncy puppies to misunderstood behavioral cases, this academy has helped us unlock the potential in even the most complex canine personalities.
Here’s just a sniff of what they specialize in:
Board & Train Programs – Great for busy adopters who want a foundation set professionally.
Private Lessons – One-on-one, tailored to your specific needs and your dog’s quirks.
Puppy STAR & AKC CGC Prep – For those little learners who deserve a gold star and a head start.
Aggressive/Reactive Dog Rehab – Compassionate, structured help for dogs who need a second chance.
Service Dog Training – From task training to public access, they do it all.
Fitness & Conditioning – For dogs recovering from injury or just needing to get their zoomies in, responsibly!
Unlike big-box programs, SWOK K9 Academy offers in-person, individualized support with a trainer who genuinely gets to know the dog, the home environment, and the goals of the family. It’s not just training—it’s relationship building.
Whether your dog is leash reactive, crate shy, overly excitable, or working on impulse control—we’ve got someone in your corner. Our rescue dogs often work directly with SWOKK9 pre-adoption, and adopters get exclusive access to continued training support after going home.

Establish a Consistent Feeding Schedule: Feed your dog at the same times every day to create routine and predictability.
Portion Control: Follow your dog’s recommended portion size based on their weight and age. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, while underfeeding can cause health issues.
Transitioning Food: If you plan to change your dog’s diet, transition slowly over 7-10 days to avoid upsetting their stomach. Mix the new food with their current food, gradually increasing the proportion of new food.
Avoid Harmful Foods: Keep your dog away from chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and any artificial sweeteners (like xylitol).
The Crate as a Safe Space: Introduce the crate as a positive, safe place where your dog can relax. Use treats and toys to encourage them to go in willingly.
Never Use the Crate as Punishment: It should always be a happy space, not associated with fear.
Establish a Routine: Start with short crate periods and gradually increase the time. Use it during quiet times, not just when leaving the house, so your dog doesn’t associate it solely with being left alone.
Start Indoors: If your dog is new to leashes, begin inside where there are fewer distractions. Practice walking around the house or yard.
Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward your dog with treats and praise for walking calmly by your side.
Address Pulling: If your dog pulls, stop walking and wait until they return to your side before continuing. This teaches them that pulling doesn’t get them anywhere.
Consistency is Key: Use the same commands (“heel,” “let’s go,” etc.) to avoid confusion.
Calm and Relaxed: A wagging tail, loose body, and soft eyes mean your dog feels at ease.
Stress or Fear: Look for signs like yawning, lip licking, tucked tail, or pinned-back ears.
Aggression or Discomfort: Growling, stiff posture, or showing teeth means your dog is uncomfortable. Respect their space and remove stressors.
Reward the Good: Use treats, toys, or verbal praise to reward behaviors you want to encourage.
Be Patient: Rescue dogs may have had negative experiences in the past. Focus on building trust, not perfection.
Short Training Sessions: Keep training sessions 5-10 minutes to avoid overwhelming your dog.
