Letter Jackets

Letter Jackets

A student must earn twenty (20) points to receive a letter jacket.

All points are cumulative within a year and carry over from year to year.

A music student moving into Friendswood ISD from another Texas public school will have points assigned to them according to FISD policy. We will do our best to attribute appropriate points to singers that move in from out-of-state. In either situation, proof of points earned is the responsibility of that student.

TMEA All-State Audition Process

As the most challenging and musically rewarding competition series of the school year, the TMEA All-State process provides the greatest opportunity to accumulate points. Students may gain points at each level of the competition depending on their level of success. Students often begin working on this music over the summer

District Audition (First round -  mid September)
Students gain 2 points if they advance to the next round, and 1 point for auditioning but not advancing.

Region Audition (Second round -  mid October)
Students gain 3 points if they advance to the next round, and 1 point for auditioning but not advancing.

Pre-Area Audition (Third round -  early  December)
Students gain 6 points if they advance to the next round, and 3 points for auditioning but not advancing.

Area Audition (Final round - early January) ("All-State")
Students automatically letter if they make an All-State choir.

UIL Solo Competition

The UIL Solo Competition is considered to be a great opportunity for students to get their feet wet in a low pressure competition situation. They only learn one song, and only compete for a rating rather than competing against other students for rankings as in the All-State process. Songs for younger students and beginner level choir singers (Class 3 and Class 2) are often quite accessible, and can be learned within a couple of days. Harder songs (Class 1) are given to more advanced singers, and often require assistance from one of our private vocal instructors.

Class 1 Solo
Students gain 3 points for achieving a rating of 1 (Superior)
Students gain 2 points for achieving a rating of 2 (Excellent)
Students do not gain points for a rating below 2

Class 2 or 3 Solo
Students gain 2 points for achieving a rating of 1 (Superior)
Students gain 1 point for achieving a rating of 2 (Excellent)
Students do not gain points for a rating below 2

Annual Choir Participation

Singers should be rewarded for their performance in choir throughout the year! These points allow for a student to accumulate points even if they do not compete in competitions.

First year in high school choir: 3 points

Second year in high school choir: 3 points

Third year in high school choir: 3 points

Fourth year in high school choir: 10 points

It is intentional that these points add up to 19 and not 20 -- If a singer is going to letter in choir, they are expected to represent the program in a competition at least once in their four years!
