FIS is a phone-free school. No student is to be on the their mobile phone during the school day.
1. Phone Powered Down Before Entering Campus
All students must power down their phones as they enter the school gate or when the school bus enters campus before exiting the bus.
Phones must be kept in bags or lockers and not be used or visible during school hours.
Phones may be used on campus after 15:10.
2. Phone Visibility and Use
Phones must not be seen or heard throughout the school day. They are to be stored in a locker or school bag and not in pockets.
Any phone seen or heard by teachers and staff before 15:10 will be confiscated immediately. Please see the section below for next steps.
Students must not wear AirPods or headphones during the school day while walking around campus. All students must remain unplugged during class transitions and while on school grounds. The only exception to this expectation is during dedicated times in 6-12 classes, where students may listen to music or coursework as directed by the teacher. Students in Grades 9-12 may listen to music or coursework during breaks, lunch, or free periods, while seated.
Consequences of Regulation Violation
First Offense:
The phone will be confiscated by teachers/staff and taken to Mr. Chaplin’s office (295a) for 6-8, or Ms. van der Meer’s office (367) for 9-12.
The student can retrieve their phone from Mr. Chaplin’s or Ms. van der Meer’s office at the end of the school day. If Mr. Chaplin or Ms. van der Meer is not available, the phone will be in the respective 6-8 or 9-12 office. It can be collected until 16:00.
We will communicate with parents/guardians at this point that, if it happens again, parents will be required to pick up the phone after any further offenses.
Second Offense:
The phone will be confiscated and taken to Mr. Chaplin’s office (6-8) or Ms. van der Meer’s office (9-12). Parents/guardians will be contacted to let them know they need to retrieve the phone.
A parent, guardian, or designated adult will be required to pick up the phone from Mr. Chaplin’s office or Ms. van der Meer’s office at the end of the school day between 15:10 and 16:00, or on the following school day. If Mr. Chaplin or Ms. van der Meer is not available, the phone will be held in the respective 6-8 or 9-12 office. The student will not be allowed to retrieve their phone independently.
Additional Offenses:
After the second offense, the student will be required to lock their phone in their locker at the beginning of the day. If the student does not have a lock for their locker, they may pick up a lock from the 6-8 office.
Repeated violations of this regulation will result in further disciplinary action, which may include parent meetings, loss of break or lunch privileges, or additional consequences.
