If you're a small team or individual journalist working with limited resources, one of our recommendations is to consider freelance partnerships with creators who are already successful on TikTok.
Think of them as freelance authors, but the platform for publishing their work is TikTok.
During our project, we consulted with three creators who were interested in collaboration with The Intercept: Elise Joshi, Joris Lechêne and Karl Emmrich. Although our conversations focused on The Intercept, their insights can be applied to any journalists who are starting on the platform.
Here is a freelance TikTok video could look. Karl Emmrich (@karlemmrich), political commentator on TikTok, made a video specifically for The Intercept (the video is private):
If you're just starting out on TikTok, collaborating with freelancers native to the platform alongside creating your own videos will speed up the time it takes to figure out what works best for you on TikTok.
For our project with The Intercept, we created a master spreadsheet of creators who are popular among The Intercept's main beats.
These contacts can be used in two ways:
As people who should be informed about your work and could feature it in their videos.
As potential partners for Freelance collaboration.
The photo below is a sample of what our database looked like for The Intercept. Perhaps a similar model would work for you!
