3.1 Be able to develop effective working relationships with film production team members
The film industry relies on teamwork and confidence in the various persons within it to support the whole film production process. Timekeeping, reliability, safe working, use of personal initiative, the ability to collaborate with colleagues to test and adjust candidates decisions so that the result reflects joint thinking are examples of what needs to be considered.
Candidates need to identify how their behaviour impacts on others in this relationship to ensure effective working practice. How well did you work with others?
Please answer the following questions;
Why is teamwork important when working on a film production?
Working together with multiple minds linked together is a lot better and a lot quicker. More people can get more things organised which will ease the process of creating the film.
In what ways did your team have to work together to produce your film?
We worked together when we were sorting out what roles everyone would play when creating the film. Everyone needs to have a productive role, so we made sure that what we were doing would help create the film.
Give an example of when your production team worked well together.
We'd go in a production line when creating scenes for our film. First, the storyboard for the scene would have been made. It's then animated and brought to After Effects for compositing.
What can happen if there isn’t good teamwork?
Things could become more expensive, the production of the film could become really jumbled and disorganised, it could take way longer to get things done, and the entire project could be put on hold or even scrapped.
3.2 Identify the qualities needed to work well with others.
How did you show the following? Give examples:
Good timekeeping
I've always made sure that I'm at the workshops either early or on-time (It's seemed to work all of the time as well even though Elephant & Castle is an absolute pain in the backside).
Being reliable
I've always said that I can do what I can do, and made sure to tell other people if something's putting too much pressure on me.
Teamwork
Connecting with my co-filmmakers to ensure everyone's caught up and not falling behind on production.
Sharing ideas
If one of us had a good idea that we want to share, we made sure our idea is heard and taken into consideration properly.
Safe working
Ensured that we are abiding by the risk assessment at all times to prevent accidents that could disrupt the production of the film.
3.3 Describe how you worked with others collaboratively on your film production
How did you divide up the roles?
Since the film was purely 2D animated, all of us did animation at one point or another during the production of the film. I was more on working on the animation than anything else. However mostly people took a role that they already had a bit of experience in.
Give one example of a time where you faced a challenge as a group and overcame it, talk about the role you took in this.
Time was probably the one thing that was not on our side while making the film. I'd be happily sketching away at a scene, only to realise by the end of it that I'd spent the entire day drawing a single scene. We overcame it by making sticking to a schedule.
How did your role in the group work with the other roles? For example if you were the producer, how did you work with the director?
I kept in touch with the storyboard artist (Arthur) to make sure that what I was animating still followed the progression of the story.
How could you improve your ability to work with others?
I definitely need to up my communication skills because sometimes I'll keep on changing a scene over and over again until I feel that it's decent enough. I sometimes don't take into account what other people want in the scene so I have to take their advice and start over again. Maybe for next time I could get all of the information I need about the scene so I can (hopefully) get it right first or second time.
