The theoretical part of DIP involves interns of 20Formation to write an action research paper for the ITD Course. An action research is a disciplined process of inquiry conducted by and for those taking the action with the primary goal of encouraging continued reflection and making improvements. Action research provides an opportunity to explore the effectiveness of a particular strategy or technique in any professional field.
Action research is a cyclical process and the steps include formulating the research question based on the identified problem, devising an action plan with strategies to improve and/or refine practice, supporting the strategies through literature review, implementing them at their workplace, gathering data and evidence to support them and finally observing and reflecting upon the process. Researchers who engage in action research inevitably find it to be an empowering experience.
The ITD Course is divided into two paths (i) Research Production Path (2A) and (ii) Training Production Path (2B). The senior-year students of Dar Al Fikr interning at the event planning company ‘20Formation’ founded under DAF Intrapreneurship Program (DIP) are given an exclusive opportunity to combine ‘action’ with ‘research.’
Action Researchrefers to a wide variety of evaluative, investigative, and analytical research methods designed to diagnose problemsin the field and help researchers/interns develop practical solutions to address them quickly and efficiently. The general goal is to create a simple, practical, repeatable process of iterative learning, evaluation, and improvement that leads to increasingly better results for the organization, in this case, 20Formation.
“no action without research; no research without action” – Kurt Lewin
The unique combination of the action and the research is what distinguishes action research from most other forms of traditional research. The students, while interning at their respective jobs at the company, will identify a real problem experienced in their field and follow a reflective process that allows for inquiry and discussion as components of the ‘research.’ The interns are responsible for formulating research questions, reviewing the literature, documenting the steps of inquiry, collecting and analyzing data, and making informed decisions that can lead to desired outcomes in the company. The implementation of the desired outcomes (strategies/action plan) in the company are part of the ‘action’ component.
(I) Training Production Path 2B
The Training Production Path 2B empowers the interns to use their experience in the company to train their colleagues from different departments in their own field, to present their action research highlighting all the steps they underwent and to showcase their work in the company. Due to the current lockdown situation, the interns uploaded video recordings of their training presentations. This will be beneficial for current and upcoming company interns. The interns will also be part of the DIP Discussion Session held on Zoom to allow for any questions regarding their training presentations or the action research.
