Reading: Reading is an important part of the day. Our class will spend a minimum of 90 minutes each day working specifically on this area. Additionally, children will be expected to practice their reading skills at home for 20 minutes each night. Our school's Read and Lead program will help by providing incentives for children who read nightly. More information about this program will be sent home at the beginning of the year.
Math: Your child will participate in mathematics for 60 minutes each day. These lessons will involve children working as individuals, partners, teams, and whole group. Each lesson will include hands-on activities and group practice of the new skill being taught.
Handwriting: Discovery 2nd graders are taught to print in Manuscript style. This style print is practiced throughout our day. I will encourage children to focus on forming each letter correctly using primary lines.
STEM Boxes: STEM Bins/boxes are filled with an engineering manipulatives, such as Legos, pattern blocks, base ten blocks, magnatiles, Keva planks, Dominos, cups, unifix cubes, toothpicks and playdough, or popsicle sticks with velcro on the ends. The boxes also contain small sets of task cards on metal rings that picture a variety of basic engineering structures. When students’ regular classwork is complete, students can take one STEM Bin at a time, either to their seat or a more quiet carpet area so as not to distract other students who are working, and get a quiet moment to engineer. They use the materials in the box to construct as many different structures on the cards as they can. And instead of being just “busy,” students are engaged in creative, complex tasks and are encouraged to think like inventors. Kinesthetic learners, spatial learners, and logical learners will love exploring the different possibilities for the building materials as they try to construct more challenging structures.
Behavior: See Behavior link to learn about our classroom behavior policy.
Parent/Teacher Communication: See Communication link.
Lunch: Children will have lunch and recess from 12:35-1:00 each day. Please send lunch money to school in an envelope labeled with your child's name and date. You may also pay for lunch credits online.
Water: Your child can keep a water bottle in his/her backpack to get drinks from periodically throughout the day. Please make sure to clean and fill up their water bottle each day. We no longer are able to use drinking fountains at school.
Birthdays: This year, instead of sending birthday treats for everyone, we will have a “Birthday in a Bag”. Please fill this “Birthday in a Bag” with special treats and trinkets (cupcake, candy, markers, fun erasers, etc.) for your child only. You can send the bag with your child on his or her birthday (or day closest to it). The lucky birthday kid will get to open the bag before lunch time when we sing “Happy Birthday”! If there is an edible treat in the bag they can bring it to lunch with them. I will send the child's birthday bag home at the beginning of their birthday month (Summer birthdays will be sent in June). If you do not you child to celebrate with our class please let me know.
Toys: Toys are not allowed at school.
Transportation: Any transportation changes need to be called in before 2:30. Your child will be placed on their regular transportation unless I receive a message from the office.
***Thank you for taking the time to read this! I realize that a lot of information comes home at this time of year, but I hope that you will keep this handy for a reference as the year goes on. I look forward to working with you and your child this year!
