Math

Students in grades 6 - 8 use the Connected Mathematics Project (CMP3) curriculum resource, which is a research-based instructional program that immerses learners in real-world math problems. The aim is for students to construct a strong understanding of mathematics through problem-solving exploration, application, and practice. Click here for the FHPS family brochure about CMP3. Click here for helpful information for families about CMP3.

Students should expect to have daily homework assignments. These may be ACE (Application Connection Extension) problems from their student text or practice problems from various online platforms, which students will be able to access via Google Classroom or their Clever account.

In our first unit, Prime Time, students will explore important properties of whole numbers that are related to multiplication and division. The investigations will help students understand relationships among factors, multiples, divisors, and products. Throughout the unit, students will be working toward proficiency on the unit learning targets. They will periodically assess their progress toward the stated goals and keep track on their copy of the Prime Time Learning Target Sheet.

Prime Time Key Concepts

  • I can classify numbers as prime, composite, even, odd or square.

  • I can solve problems using factors and multiples.

  • I can use strategies for finding common factors and common multiples between two whole numbers.

  • I can use strategies to find the least common multiple (LCM) and the greatest common factor (GCF)..

  • I can recognize and solve problems that call for the LCM or the GCF.

  • I can recognize that every whole number can be written in exactly one way as a product of prime numbers (prime factorization or factor tree).

  • I can recognize the distributive property and relate it to the area of a rectangle.

  • I can use the properties of operations, including the distributive property, to write equivalent numerical expressions.

  • I can solve problems using the order of operations and distributive property.
