Online
High School Course Opportunities
PHS students looking for additional flexibility in their course options can take online high school courses through several providers which expand the access of course offerings. Students who are self-directed and self-motivated and have work habits suited for an online class may find these a beneficial option.
Virtual High School (VHS)
Virtual High School is not a full-time program. Virtual High School courses offer Semester (.5 credit) and Full-year (1.0 credit) courses. Full-year Advanced Placement courses are also offered through VHS. AP courses online are very rigorous and are designed to ensure success on the national AP exam. Note that if you take an AP course on VHS, you will be required to register to take the AP exam. Only a limited number of seats in VHS are available and enrollment is based upon course availability and eligibility requirements (enrollment is not guaranteed). Junior and Senior students are given first priority. Quarterly and final grades will be issued based on the VHS calendar. Students must be recommended by their school counselor, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, a good attendance record, and possess the motivation and self-discipline necessary to be a successful Virtual High School student. VHS courses are rigorous and run on a strictly followed weekly schedule (NOT self-paced). If a student drops the course, a withdrawal will appear on the transcript. The VHS course catalog can be viewed here.
Students can request registration for a VHS class through their school counselor.
ALL COURSE NETWORK (ACN)
All students in Rhode Island have the option of participating in, and earning credits, including college credits) from the All Course Network. This is state-run option that is given to students in our district. We are sharing it for informational purposes but have no direct control over the classes and when they are offered.
For more information visit the PHS ACN page.
Students should contact their school counselor prior to registering for ACN courses to ensure that any credits will transfer to PHS.
Edgenuity
Edgenuity is a self-paced virtual program. Students must possess the motivation and self-discipline necessary to be successful in Edgenuity. Courses are 18-weeks in length and are offered on a singleton and full-time basis. Singleton course eligibility is determined by the individual school counselor. The number of seats per semester are limited based upon course availability and eligibility requirements (enrollment is not guaranteed). Please note that not all Edgenuity courses meet NCAA eligibility requirements.
Students will receive an incomplete grade for their quarterly grades until a final grade is issued at the end of the semester. A student can request for their quarterly grade to be published on their report card by submitting an “Edgenuity Report Card Change Request'' form. Edgenuity grades are based on a percentage of work that is required to be completed by a predetermined deadline. If a student drops the course, a withdrawal will appear on the transcript. The Edgenuity course catalog can be viewed here.
Students can request registration for an Edgenuity class through their school counselor.
A student wishing to be a full-time virtual student must make the request through the office of the Assistant Superintendent. Grading policy and drop/add policy is implemented as stated above.
