State Testing: Parent Rights Opt-Out Rights
State testing will begin at FGCS the second week of April. State law requires students in 3rd-8th grades to participate in standardized testing every school year. All students in 3rd-8th grades take standardized tests in math and English Language Arts. Students in 5th and 8th grades also take a science test. Testing schedules vary and tests are not timed but tests expire 20 calendar days after they are begun. Students typically work on tests 45-60 minutes/day 3-4 days/week over the course of several weeks.
Under state law, parents have the right to opt students out of state testing. However, there are different rules regarding parents' opt-out rights depending on the test. For English Language Arts and Mathematics tests, parents need only submit a form. For Science testing, parents may opt out only for reasons of religion or disability using a separate form.
Opt-out forms are available on the District website here or you may request copies in the school office. Parents wishing to opt students out of testing must fill out forms each year they want to opt out their students; forms do not carry over year to year.
We request that parents who wish to opt students out of testing submit forms ASAP to allow us time to plan alternate arrangements for them during test sessions. Please contact school test coordinator Karen Torry at k.torry@fgcschool.org or 503-359-4600 with any questions about state testing or parent opt-out rights.
