The best hiring lesson came from the most unexpected place.
A community theater production.
I worked with a gentleman who was directing a show and seeing his audition decision-making process influenced every hiring decision I’ve made since.
He selected his cast as a complete team to ensure the individuals could work together.
He wouldn’t pick actors based on individual criteria or just “the best at x y or z.”
He cast the roles based first on the team dynamic.
Could these people, together, make magic? Would audiences accept who they were, every moment on stage, over and over again?
In essence, he casted for chemistry.
Don’t overlook the importance of chemistry for your production.
Be sure you’re adding those right team members that can add to the existing chemistry.
Sure, look for job capability. But look beyond that, too.
Do you look for indications on how they work? How well they interact? Collaborate? Willingness to learn?
Or even just how they listen to others?
Let’s face it, functional capabilities can always be learned and improved. You can learn more about CPC, new tools, proceeses, and find new research methods.
It’s much harder to change someone’s character and influence chemistry.
