I completed this "Philosophy Statement & Professional Development Plan" during Ethics. Values, and Foundational Principles of Information Science Professions (ISCI 701). The goal for this work sample was to help develop my personal vision and professional development plan which in turn would determine how I lead in our field as well as how I respond to change in the LIS field as a professional.
This was the first time I was asked to think critically about my pedagogy and adaptability. The most important thing I learned from this experience is there are some integral pieces of who I am that inadvertently transfer into all of my research, teaching, and day-to-day activities. For example, I strongly believe that librarians and library-staff should be patron-centered individuals who seek to meet patrons where they are in their knowledge base. This experience, for me, was very eye-opening; previous to its completion, I had not seriously had a chance to recognize the layers of my philosophical understanding to who I was in the greater schema of librarianship, or how many of my programs were already influenced by my pedagogy.
This was probably the hardest assignment to complete before I started doing focused research. I have found that self-reflection is something that I struggle with, along with verbal presentations. Thinking about improving my future practice, I do believe that my philosophy will need to be reviewed and updated as both myself and the landscape of librarianship changes. This artifact, to me, demonstrates my ability to formulate short - and long-term plans for professional development based on an awareness of the needs and realistic demands of the chosen work setting(s), personal competencies, and the profession; explains my understanding of the role of an academic librarians in their community, culture, and society; develops a personal philosophy of professional behavior and ethics with the understanding that as I grow as a professional my philosophy will adapt and need modification; and demonstrates my ability to construct a career plan based on personal and professional goals.
