Use the following documents to assist the team in determining how much support a student needs, as well as a reference guide for how to document paraprofessional support in the IEP.
Definitions of K-12 Paraprofessional Support:
● Paraprofessional Support:
Paraprofessional support that is/can be SHARED with more than one student during a specific time period or during a specific task(s). The paraprofessional may assist students as needs arise or as the need for support is documented in the IEP. This is typically support needed during academics, transitions, particular tasks, check-in/check-out, unpredictable events, organization of materials, etc...
● Child-specific Paraprofessional Support:
Paraprofessional support that is NOT SHARED with any other students during a specific time period or during a specific task(s). During the specified time period or task, the paraprofessional assists one student with the specific needs that are documented in the IEP. This is typically high levels of support specific to the child’s needs such as activities of daily living, significant safety needs, or significant behaviors in both general and special education, and the support is predictable.
● Transportation Paraprofessional:
Paraprofessional support provided on a vehicle to assist a student(s) with needs related to riding safely to and/or from school and home. The paraprofessional support is provided per documentation in the IEP. This is typically used when a child has a physical or mental impairment that would prohibit them from safely riding a regular school bus.
Reminder: All types of paraprofessional support are documented in the child-specific paraprofessional support section of the IEP, however the way the information is documented will vary.
