Book Recommendations

The following are some of my favorite books for6th 8th graders. Below them, you'll find links to other lists of recommendations.

A Long Walk To Water tells the true story of Salva Dut who lived in southern Sudan at the outbreak of the second Sudanese Civil War. Follow Salva as he travels across the desert, from refugee camp to refugee camp. Salva's story is similar to many of the Lost Boy's, but has an inspiring end that intertwines with a girl living in modern day South Sudan.

At the beginning of eighth grade, learning disabled Max and his new friend Freak, whose birth defect has affected his body but not his brilliant mind, find that when they combine forces they make a powerful team.

After being sold to a cruel couple in New York City, a slave named Isabel spies for the rebels during the Revolutionary War.

Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he hates the color yellow. The improbable story of Christopher's quest as he investigates the suspicious death of a neighborhood dog makes for one of the most captivating, unusual, and widely heralded novels in recent years.

C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia has enchanting fantastical talking creatures, epic battles between good and evil, and magical doorways into new lands. It's a fantastic series to dive into at any age.

Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader. But one night after Girl Scouts she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth, and what follows is a long and frustrating journey with on-again, off-again braces, surgery, embarrassing headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth attached. And on top of all that, there's still more to deal with: a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly. This coming-of-age true story is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever been in middle school, and especially those who have ever had a bit of their own dental drama.

When Reese is forced to go on a boating trip with his family, the last thing he expects is to be shipwrecked on an island-especially one teeming with weird plants and animals. But what starts out as simply a bad vacation turns into a terrible one, as the castaways must find a way to escape while dodging the island's dangerous inhabitants. With few resources and a mysterious entity on the hunt, each secret unlocked could save them or spell their doom.

Cassia is living in a society where individuals don’t get to make their own decisions. When an official program matches her to the boy who will be her mate for life, something goes wrong with the computer. The screen flashes the face of her best friend but matches her to another boy. Cassia finds that she has a lot to question: her society, her future and her forbidden love.
