The GLAZE project, a collaboration between Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, NOVA University, and Évora University, will investigate the evolution of Iznik tiles between the 15th and 17th centuries. These tiles feature a variety of designs, predominantly with floral and geometric patterns, and a distinct colour palette that reflects the significant technical innovations of the period.
Using non-invasive techniques, the project aims to document the artistic and technological developments of the tiles by studying colour transitions, manufacturing advancements, and cultural exchanges. Additionally, a comparative analysis will be conducted between Iznik and Damascus tile productions to explore the extent of cultural and technological exchanges between these two traditions.
