At Forest City Regional Elementary School we’re committed to implementing SW-PBIS and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) with fidelity. Both approaches (SW-PBIS and SEL) share a commitment to improving both academic and behavioral outcomes for students through explicitly teaching desired behaviors. Both approaches view teachers as the primary change agents, value research-informed approaches, and promote student voice and engagement in the process. Research has documented when PBIS and SEL are combined, they have the greatest success in improving mental health and decreasing disruptive behaviors.
SEL will be taught at the Tier 1 level by classroom teachers using the universal, classroom-based evidenced-based curriculum, Second Step, at grade levels PK-8 beginning in the 2020-2021 school year. A “Home Link” activity that gives students an opportunity to practice new skills with their caregivers will be sent home following each core lesson.
In addition to core SEL lessons, we will be utilizing the Child Protective and Bully Prevention Units from Second Step K-5. Instruction of the Bully Prevention Unit will be done during SEL specials cycle and delivered by Mrs. Zawisky, while the Child Protective Unit will be delivered through collaborative efforts among classroom teachers, school counselors, and school social worker within the classroom setting.
