Children of all ages (even adults!) love stickers, which makes using reward sticker charts a fun and easy way to keep your child motivated.
Starting a reward sticker chart is simple:
Pick a sticker chart to start with and get some stickers! Each child has a different threshold for delayed gratification, so choose a chart that works for your child (such as every five stickers or every ten stickers).
Show the sticker chart to your child. Together, come up with one action they can take to earn a sticker. For example, each time they read for 20 minutes, they earn a sticker. Start with easily attainable goals and easily doable actions.
Together, decide on a reward for completing the sticker chart. This reward should be motivating and able to be given as soon as the sticker chart is filled up. Some favorites are: a trip to Sweet Babes or DQ, a new book from Barnes & Noble, getting to choose dinner or a special activity.
The most important part of any reward system is to be consistent! Place the sticker chart somewhere so that both you and your child can be reminded of the goal. If needed, set an alarm as a reminder to add stickers to the reward chart.
Once the chart is filled up, celebrate with a reward!
