HUGH B. NOLAN was a long time elementary physical education teacher, staff member at Camp Greentop, and an elementary school administrator. He was committed and devoted to young people. This track meet is dedicated in his honor as a lasting memorial to his service of the young people in Frederick County.
The HUGH B. NOLAN track meet began in 1977 for elementary schools; the middle schools joined in the competition in 1981. Over the years this meet has grown beyond its capacity to hold both elementary and middle school events on the same evening. For over a decade the elementary schools’ track meet and the middle schools’ track meet are now held on different nights. Just a few years ago the elementary and middle school meets expanded to include a handful of Unified track and field events to the meet so that students with identified special needs could also participate with their age appropriate peer group. Together, the 40 elementary schools showcase many talented student-athletes, with this being some of their first experiences with the sport. Well over 1,200 young athletes will compete in the elementary track meet while nearly 500 middle school athletes will compete for the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.
