Hood College's three-year, seven semester Post-Baccalaureate Certificate (PBC) program is designed for FCPS paraprofessionals seeking licensure in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or Special Education, as well as conditionally licensed FCPS teachers earn their initial teacher licensure in one of the three areas.
Hood College's PBC program is designed for the working adult. Field placements and internships are completed while actively "on the job," with classroom experiences aligned to their targeted licensure area(s). Evening coursework occurs in a virtual setting, with opportunities for in-person support and coaching. Hood faculty coaching, mentoring, and supervision are embedded throughout the three-year, seven semester program, which includes some summer coursework.
Note that the Early Childhood Education and the Elementary Education pathways may be taken concurrently leading candidates to licensure in both areas.
Prospective candidates can pursue the following licensure:
Early Childhood Education
Elementary Education
Special Education
Early Childhood and Elementary Education (Dual Licensure)
The FCPS/Hood GYO Collaborative Program is designed for success. Candidates admitted into the program will receive supports to ensure their initial teacher licensure in chosen area(s), success in the profession, and financial well-being. These supports include:
Full tuition and fees covered by the grant and paid directly by FCPS to Hood College
The cost of textbooks reimbursed to the candidate by Hood College
The cost of Praxis assessments reimbursed to the candidate by Hood College
Praxis and edTPA preparation
FCPS and Hood mentors to guide the candidate through their instructional journey
Through a comprehensive mentorship structure, paraprofessionals transitioning into teaching roles receive sustained instructional guidance, professional support, and coordinated supervision while remaining embedded in their school communities.
At the time of enrollment in the pathway, candidates will be asked to sign an acknowledgement form where they commit to the following:
Upon program completion and licensure, teach for FCPS for a minimum of three years as a full-time teacher in a high-needs grade level or content area
Maintain a 3.0 GPA each semester of the program
Participate in program evaluation (e.g., focus groups and surveys)
Lastly, the candidate commits that if they withdraw from the GYO program, they will repay FCPS the entirety of tuition, fees, and other costs reimbursed to Hood College through the Maryland GYO Educators Program grant.
