COUNTY-WIDE HIGH SCHOOL COLLEGE & CAREER PROGRAMS

Welcome

Frederick County Public Schools offers many opportunities for students to explore career pathways, increase the rigor and value of their high school education, and prepare for college.  The Academy for the Fine Arts, Career & Technology Center, Frederick Community College Dual Enrollment program, the Frederick County Virtual School, the IB program, and the ROTC program are county-wide programs available to all FCPS high school students.

The Academy for the Fine Arts is a half day college and career program for students in grades 10-12 who are interested in an arts based pathway to their post-secondary experience.  Students select a focus area in either dance, theatre, music, musical theatre, or visual art and enhance their knowledge and skills in their craft through rigorous coursework (some for college credit), collaboration with students from other disciplines, field experience, workshops with professionals, college visits, and regular showcases.  Based on each student’s schedule, the AFA is a customizable one, two, or three year experience.  Students who enroll in a third year experience participate in capstone projects, topical seminars, and community internships.

The Career & Technology Center provides intensive career-specific training in more than 20 career pathways for FCPS students in 10th-12th grade.  Courses are taught in half-day blocks at the Career & Technology Center.  Students attend their high schools the other half of the day where they complete academic course requirements.  In addition to career training, emphasis is placed on the development of broad, transferable professional skills that are essential for successful employment.  The Career & Technology Center believes that education must provide students not only with essential academic knowledge, but also with technical and personal competencies that will allow them to become lifelong learners so that they can adapt to the changing requirements of the workplace.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a rigorous pre-university course of study that meets the needs of highly motivated secondary students. The program "encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate, and lifelong learners" (IBO Mission Statement) who are prepared to contribute positively in their local communities and the greater world.

Participation in the program requires a two-year commitment to a program of studies that will challenge students across all disciplines. Students learn how to learn, how to analyze, how to reach considered conclusions about people, their languages and literature, their ways in society, and the scientific forces of the environment. After completing the required IB classes and performing well on the IB assessments, students receive an IB Diploma in addition to their Maryland high school diploma.
