SPANISH I
SEÑORA LOGAN
Objectives:
To increase your cultural awareness and knowledge of Spanish-speaking countries
To speak Spanish, focusing on reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills
Classroom Rules:
Everyone deserves respect: Respect the teacher, classmates, and property in the room. If you respect others, you will be respected in return. You do not have to like everyone, but you do have to be polite. If something is not yours, leave it alone. When the teacher is talking, everyone else MUST stop talking. If you have a question or something relevant, important, and appropriate to say, RAISE YOUR HAND.
Come to class on time and prepared: Be in your seat when the bell rings, ready to start class. Bring YOUR OWN textbook, workbooks, pen or pencil, notebook, and completed homework. Do not rely on others to supply you with your necessary materials.
Stay in your seat unless you have permission to be up moving around: Throw away any garbage and sharpen pencils before or after the bell rings. Unnecessary movements distract others from learning.
Refrain from using inappropriate language: This includes profanity, making fun of others, or using racist or sexist language. It is important to be positive and to appreciate others with different languages, cultures, and backgrounds.
No gum, food, or drinks in class. If you bring these items into class, they must be left on the counter.
No passes unless it is an absolute emergency.
Do your best, have a winning attitude, and give each activity your best effort: Approach each lesson with an open mind. Just because something is “different” does not mean that it is wrong. See this experience as a chance to learn something new.
Participate in class, and speak Spanish as much as possible: Expect to make mistakes—everyone does. Learn from your mistakes and go on.
*If these rules are not followed, consequences will proceed as follows: one warning, teacher detention, phone call home, office referral. The teacher reserves the right to skip to any disciplinary step when necessary. The teacher will not permit any student to disrupt the learning of any other student or to make the classroom unsafe in any way.
Cell Phone/Headphones/Smart Watch Policy: Possession of cell phones, headphones, and smart watches is strictly forbidden in the classroom. Cell phones should be turned off and placed in the cell phone caddy prior to the beginning of class. This serves as your warning. If a student's cell phone is out during class, the following consequences will result:
1st offense and any subsequent offense: a referral will be written.
**Remember, the best option is to leave technology at home or in your car during class time to prevent any theft or damage to the devices in the classroom.**
Materials:
a spiral notebook for all notes
a folder or three ring binder to organize handouts—FOR SPANISH ONLY!!!
paper and pens or pencils
a package of dry erase markers for in-class practice with individual whiteboards
Class Participation:
You cannot learn a foreign language without speaking it. You cannot speak a foreign language without practice! We are here to learn; please do not be afraid to try to speak in class. Lack and/or refusal to participate will lower grades dramatically. Communicating effectively in Spanish is a skill that requires as much practice as possible. Your grade will come from the effort you put into the course, rather than from your level of intelligence.
Homework/Assignments:
Homework will be used to reinforce what was covered in class. You need to write down all assignments in your planner. Unless otherwise stated, ALL homework is due at the beginning of class. Assignments will be graded for effort and completion. Each homework assignment will be worth 10 points. If the homework is completed by the student him/herself, is in class on time, and shows good effort, it will receive credit. COME TO CLASS PREPARED.
VERY LITTLE EXTRA CREDIT IS GIVEN. Keep up with work from day 1. Do not expect to be able to make up in the last week of the grading period for 8 weeks of unsatisfactory work.
Extra Help: If you have been struggling throughout an entire unit, please DO NOT WAIT UNTIL IT IS TOO LATE TO ASK FOR HELP! Sra. Peden will be available for tutoring Wednesdays after school starting in October, and I will be available for tutoring after school until 3:30 by appointment.
Renaissance card policy: I will accept any reward on the Ren Cards; however, I will NOT accept the rewards for summative assessments.
Cheating: Cheating can occur in many forms and will not be tolerated. It will result in a zero, parent contact, or an administrative referral. Examples of cheating may include but are not limited to the following: (a) using any online translator for more than an occasional word in writing assignments, (b) copying and pasting any work from any resource and taking credit for it as your own, when the assignment is expected to be the original work of the student, (c) copying any work from another student, as well as allowing another student to copy from you, whether in or out of class/sharing assignment questions or answers with others, (d) paying someone else for their work from previous years, (e) having someone else do your work for you.
Make-up work:
If you are absent, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to see me for missed work or to schedule a time to make up a test. With so many students, I will not ask for make-up work, so make sure YOU keep track of what you owe. Ask me what you missed BEFORE or AFTER class; never in the middle of a lesson or activity. Another option is to talk to a friend and get homework assignments before you come to the next class. Furthermore, everything is posted on Google Classrooms, so you are fully capable of keeping up with what we are doing in class when you are not here. Excused Absences: Student will have the number of days absent up to 5 days to complete missing work without penalty. A zero will be put into the gradebook as a placeholder until such time as the work is made up. Unexcused Absences: Students will receive a zero for missing work when the absence is coded as unexcused. Work turned in any time after being collected by the teacher will receive a maximum of 60%. Formative assessments submitted after a month from their due date will NOT be accepted. *Not every formative assessment (classwork/homework) will be graded.
Tests or quizzes must be made up before or after school—NEVER during class, when I am teaching new material that you are responsible for, as well. It’s YOUR grade, and if you fail to make up a quiz, test, or homework, or make arrangements to do so, it will get averaged in as a zero and bring your overall grade down severely.
Grades: 60% quizzes/tests/projects (summative)
40% homework, classwork, class participation (formative)
Topics to be covered this year (tentatively): Spanish-speaking countries and capitals, alphabet, vocabulary and commands related to the classroom, colors, numbers, subject pronouns, definite and indefinite articles, present tense, ser and estar, gustar, tener and tener expressions, ir and ir+a+infinitive, noun/adjective agreement, family, stem change verbs

Movie Permission Form for Ms. Logan’s classes
Student Name: ________________________________________________________________
Dear Students and Parents,
The administration of Fox Creek High School requires us to seek parent permission for using video clips and/or full-length films in the classroom. Movies shown in Spanish will have educational value and will have an accompanying assignment to ensure student understanding. They may also be used as part of an occasional class earned reward/incentive fiesta. In order to save you from signing multiple forms, I have compiled all of the possible choices for my class on this one form so you can fill it out just one time. If you would prefer your child not to watch movies, alternative assignments will be provided.
Sincerely,
Ms. Erin Logan
