Florida Keys provide memories and beautiful getaway

by Madison Perleberg

This spring break was a little chaotic but a lot of fun. My family and I had the opportunity to take a trip down to Marathon Florida, a part of the Florida Keys. The trip was definitely laid back compared to other trips we have taken, but it was really relaxing and occasionally exciting, considering all the fun activities we had the chance to do.

One of my dad's sisters was down there the first couple days we were there, so we all hung out and had some fun going to dinner and having a little birthday party for my cousin, who just turned 5. But then it was time for them to leave, so it was just my family hanging out at the house.

It was super windy most of the trip. Therefore, going on the boat wasn’t really an option because of the waves; however, it also takes up a lot of time to get all the gear loaded onto the boat along with all the food because we're out there mostly all day.

When we are lucky enough to get the chance, it’s always a lot of fun seeing all the cool fish. The day we did get to go out was because of our little flight mishap, but I'll get to that later.

We saw a lot of cool sea animals, such as a little reef shark and a turtle, which was super exciting, considering you don't see them while you're snorkeling as often.

We mostly just chilled at the house and swam in the pool for most of the trip. One day we took a trip to the beach but didn’t stay long because the water was a little cold, with it only being spring. No one really wanted to swim, but there were a ton of man 'o war jellyfish up and down the beach stuck in the seagrass.

The next day, my brother, my dad, and I ventured down to Key West to do the Ghost Tour, something I've always wanted to do. It was really interesting to learn about the “haunted” past of the Island. I learned that many people who lived there had a very large number of kids compared to today. I also learned that there were a lot of diseases going around at the time too.

On our last day we got to go to my favorite restaurant: Porkys. I always order the Key West crab cake and sweet potato fries. They always have a live singer. Plus, it’s by a dock, so while you're waiting for your food ,you can take a stroll to see if you can find any interesting sea life. Before I knew it, it was time to go home.

I was ready to go home and see friends and family, but a part of me wanted to stay in the warm, beautiful weather. To get to the airport, we took a 3-hour trip up to Ft. Lauderdale, but as soon as we got there, my mom received an email that they canceled our flight! We tried to figure this out as soon as we could because our rental car was needing to be returned.

Luckily we were issued a new rental and began looking for the earliest flight home. However, that wouldn't be until Wednesday, so we took a trip back down to Marathon and stayed an extra two days.

It was a little stressful making sure I got all my homework done, but it just happened to be super calm out on the water. This led to an amazing snorkeling day out at the lighthouse. We saw all kinds of fish, we got a perfect spot right over top of the reef, and the fish were all around the boat, so while we were swimming, all we could see was the yellow tails. Sometimes they would get so close, I could touch them.

What made it even better was there weren't many people there so it was super quiet and calm; however, we always see a bunch of barracuda at the lighthouse, which is my least favorite part because they sit so still and just watch us. Sometimes they’ll go under our boat, which is definitely my least favorite part about snorkeling.

By the last day we ran out of things to do, and we were tired of being at the house, so we took a trip up to Islandmorada, an island also a part of the keys, and walked around looking for something to do.

Finally it was Wednesday, and I was ready to go home. We flew out of Key West this time because it was a shorter drive. I don't know about you, but I had an eventful and relaxing spring break. I would 100% recommend taking a trip down to the Keys, if you ever get the chance. The water is so clear and there are so many great places to eat!

March Madness reaches crescendo with Final Four

by Tyler Bolser

For most people, March is just another month, but to sports fans around the world, March isn't just a regular month: it’s a month with the biggest American college basketball showdown in the country.

The bracket starts with 68 teams, and then over the whole month of March, each team goes head to head for a spot in the championship. The tournament is a single elimination, which means if you lose once, you’re out. Another reason why sports fans love March Madness is because of online brackets for a competition between friends to see who picked the best bracket.

As March goes on, the Final Four have been selected in their spots for the title of the NCAA championship. These Final Four are none other than Kansas, North Carolina, Duke, and Villanova. To get to the championship, these four teams are going to have to face each other this Saturday. The teams playing against each other are Villanova v.s. Kansas, April 2nd, 6:09 p.m.; and North Carolina v.s. Duke, April 2, at 8:49 p.m. My bet is in the championship we will be seeing Vilanova v.s. Duke.

The story behind March Madness is full of traditions and stories, such as Henry V. Porter, who started March Madness. He was just a regular 9-3:30 teacher and coach for Athens High School in central Illinois.

The term March Madness comes from a high school state championship team. The term March Madness was first used in 1939 in a newspaper article about high school basketball.

So with the magic month of March coming to an end, so is March Madness. Let’s hope the rest of these games are ones for the history books.

Meet Pocahontas the Hedgehog

by Adriana Lunsford

Meet my hedgehog: Pocahontas. If you’re thinking, “Is there a pun involved?” Yes, there very well is, and it is very well intended.

I first brought Pocahontas home on March 9, 2021, so her birthday is coming up!

In case you’re wondering, yes, she likes to run around. When I get her out, we put her into a little ball, and she’ll just roam around the house.

Did you know that hedgehogs have around 5000 to 7000 spines on their back? These can be raised and lowered to respond to threatening situations.

Each quill/spine lasts about a year before dropping out and being replaced. Also, the name for a baby hedgehog is a hoglet.

If you consider getting a hedgehog anytime soon, here's something I wish I had known: They are cute, but here are some things you wanna watch out for.

If you have sweaty hands, you may want to wipe them off. My hedgehog tends to try and bite my hand. In addition, if you’ve eaten something and wanna hold it, make sure to wash your hands.

Your hedgehog may think the smell of food is food. As a result, I have been bitten three times. This happened, in fact, after I’d eaten and forgotten to wash my hands.

Hedgehogs don’t have good eyesight, but they are able to see very well in the dark. Hedgehogs are nocturnal creatures.

They do need to be kept at a temperature of 70°F to 85°F. It might take a few tries, but you need to find the right sized cage for your little hog.

With the heat lamp having to constantly be on, if you have a small cage, the heat will be more concentrated on the urine and feces, making it more pungent. In addition, something to keep in mind is getting a large cage can take up space in your room.

You will also want to wash the cage every one to two weeks, and you can even just spot clean every one to two days.

To feed your hedgehog, small amounts of gut-loaded insects, such as worms and crickets, as well as a small amount of fresh vegetables and fruits, can be offered. I personally feed my hedgehog cat food with a type of bug that I purchase from the shelter or pet supply store.

Hedgehogs are small creatures, so you don’t want to overfeed them.

Beware that hedgehog lifespan is two to five years, but with the proper care, some have even lasted more than eight years.

I hope this helped, and maybe you learned a thing or two about hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs--I mean I don’t see why they can’t just share the hedge. Good thing they are so cute!

Young or old, Wildcats love their Christmas traditions

by Josh Wilson

Christmas is just around the corner, and lots of students and teachers have a favorite tradition that they do every year on Christmas. Here are some of the students’ and teachers’ favorites.

Mrs. Fultz stated, ¨My Christmas tradition is going to a Christmas Eve church service, then looking at Christmas lights.”

¨My Christmas tradition is going to Winter Fest at Kings Island,¨ explained Mr. Gutzwiller.

Mr. Deters declared, ¨Every Christmas we drive around looking at Christmas lights.”

¨Every Christmas I get together with my sisters and we make Christmas cookies,¨ proclaimed Mrs. Robinson.

Braydon Littrell, 8th grader, remarked, ¨Every year my family makes some hot chocolate and decorate the Christmas tree.¨

¨Every Christmas I love spending time with my family!” exclaimed Cody Bolser.

Mr. Herbert answered, “Every year my kids make calendars for our family and friends as a Christmas present.”

Hopefully this year will be a great Christmas especially for traditions. Merry Christmas!

Tis the season for favorite Christmas shows

by Colton Hunter

Christmas is a great holiday for those who get to spend time with family and watch Christmas movies. There are many entertaining Christmas movies. As a result, many of us enjoy watching a favorite holiday movie with our families.

Do you have a Christmas movie that you like to watch, or do you like to watch them all? The students and staff here at FCMS do, and they would like to share theirs with you. In addition, many of our staff members have a special Christmas movie.

Mr. Gutzwiller stated, “My favorite Christmas movie is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I like the holiday spirit mixed with comedy.”

Mrs. Beth Fultz remarked, “I like A Charlie Brown Christmas because it’s uplifting and funny.”

Mrs. Miranda Rauch declared, “My favorite Christmas movie is Home Alone. I like it because it’s funny.” The students and staff at FCMS seem to enjoy Christmas movies that are funny.

Like Mr.Gutzwiller, Mrs. Helen Gillman expressed, “My favorite Christmas movie is National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I like it because it’s funny.”

Mrs. Danielle Osborne stated, “My favorite Christmas movie is Santa Claus. I like Tim Allen. I watched him as a kid.”

Mrs. Sarah Baugher proclaimed, “My favorite Christmas movie is Christmas Vacation. I like it because it’s funny, and my family watches it.”

Unlike others, some of us appreciate the shorter tv specials. Mrs. Kanita Sirback stated, “My favorite Christmas movie is Rudolph because it’s a classic.”

Maybe you like to watch Christmas movies that are funny or even serious and thoughtful. Consider watching a new Christmas movie this year, and maybe you might be able to have a fresh outlook on Christmas cheer!

Whether a Buckeye or a Hoosier, we can find something to love about our state

by Saegan Joseph

”The “O” in Ohio isn’t there for nothing.” --Denis “Menace” Coleman

When you hear the name “Ohio”, you might think of the midwestern Buckeye state. It’s no different than North Dakota or Minnesota, but as my friend Dave says, “It’s really a state of mind.”

While that may be true, Ohio is so much more than a cornfield state with one or two bustling cities. I myself am from Ohio, and as Indiana is my second most visited state, and from an unbiased perspective, I can tell you there are some differences between the two states.

“It’s got everything you need, and I’m not kiddin’.”- Sarah “Leone”James.

One of the things you may not know about Ohio is, while they don’t do it directly, the Japanese say “Ohayo”, meaning “Good morning”, which is pronounced the same as “Ohio”. Name another state, one of the most influential countries in the world, that says good morning every morning.

Another thing to note is Ohio borders one of the five Great Lakes, which only seven of the 50 United States can proudly say.

Ohio has plenty of its own important figures, to name a few, Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumesh Sherman are both very crucial to the victory of the Union, and Orville Wright, one of the Wright brothers, is responsible for the invention of the airplane.

Moving from the suburbs to the country anywhere would be a big change, but everything is so far away from where we live, it takes 20 minutes just to go to McDonalds. One of the more local things I’ve noticed is that there are copious amounts of chicken, mostly fried.

For a smaller country-side town by a big lake, I figured there would be more fish, pigs, or cows than there are here. I hardly ever see chickens while driving down the very long, one-way roads, yet they have to come from somewhere because all of Brookville eats them en masse. Do not get me wrong: Brookville is very pretty and a good place to live; hence, this is why we moved here, and I do love some good fried chicken. I heard Metamora in the fall is amazing, but I’d love there to be more restaurants, such as in Batesville.

Growing up near Cincinnati kind of spoiled me. It has rivers, nearby restaurants, sights to see, different people by the minute, even going west one can see the countryside. The only thing that I didn’t like was the Bengles, but the Reds, they are good!

Indiana’s football and baseball teams are completely new to me. I’ve only been to a handful of places in Indiana. When we went to Indianapolis, it didn’t feel like Columbus. It felt new, not so much a city as it was a place; however, I haven’t been to that many cities.

If I could pick where I want to go in Indiana, I’d pick Gary because Michael Jackson is from there, and I heard it is more like a city.

It really matters on how good of a place it is to live, not the little niche things, like the importance of the state. I’m still new to being a Hoosier, but I’m a Buckeye at heart.

Mady Stone loves the scenery and variety of fun activities that Alabama provides.

Want a great vacation? Try sunny shores of Alabama

by Mady Stone

Vacation always seems to round up at the end of summer-- even make for a great summer--, and that’s what I did: I took a trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama and lay in the salty sun. There is never a boring moment in Alabama…except for when it rains.

Hurricane Ida had a huge effect on our vacation, since we had rain for the first few days. On Monday we were stuck inside! It was school work and Netflix for a whole day. But then the sweet home Alabama sun came out, and we proceeded to have fun.

We went to so many places, but one of the first was the Gulfarium, located in Florida. You can see dolphins, sea turtles, pet stingrays, reptiles, penguins, and so much more! You can also find amazing things in the gift shop, such as shirts, hoodies, stuffed animals, jewelry, and decor!

Another place we went was the Gulf Coast Zoo! The animal enclosures are super close, so visitors can see every animal perfectly! They have an amazing seated zip line that goes from the entrance to the total opposite side of the zoo to where one can see the entire zoo from above. It is an amazing view.

We also went to many souvenir shops and surf shops and ate seafood practically every day! One of my favorite restaurants is The Gulf! We went before when we visited Alabama in 2018, and we just had to go again, since it is located directly on the beach. On the last day, we also visited an outstanding beach. The waves were perfect and there were fish playing at our feet!

Finally, on one of our last days, we rented a pontoon and went to my favorite spot where thrill-seekers can jump off the base of a bridge and into the water (This is 100% safe!).

We also had a glorious time on the pontoon, stopping at islands, catching hermit crabs, looking for sand dollars, and starfish.

I had a phenomenal time on my 2021 Alabama vacation. I am hoping to see the Alabama sun again and highly recommend this vacation destination. Maybe I’ll find you swimming with dolphins!

After her homework is complete, Aubrie Graham enjoys playing with her dogs during quarantine.

Best way to beat the quarantining blues? Work first and play later

by Aubrie Graham

Sick of being stuck at home? Hard time doing your homework? Ever just want to do something fun? Let’s find out what we can do that’s fun when quarantined.

You can, and here's how to hang out with friends and stay safe!

When you’re quarantined, do your work. Do your homework and when you're done, maybe ask to go hang out with friends online or do your chores. Don’t try to say, “I’m done with my homework” or “My friend said I can come over, and she can help me with my homework.”

Don’t lie to your parents, just ask or text your friends and have them set up a Google meet or Zoom to help you.

If you have bad wifi try to go somewhere else that you know has good wifi or at least better wifi, such as the library or maybe the school parking lot, where you know there is stronger service.

Take me, for example. I try to do my work if my wifi is working. Sometimes the Internet goes in and out, due to the weather. Ask to go somewhere to get your work done.

If you want to keep good grades, take advice from someone you know. “Make sure you do your work so you won't fail and make sure that you email your teachers if you have any problems because they are always here to help you,” remarked Allyson Icenogle, honor roll student here at FCMS.

After I’m done with my homework, I also sometimes play with my dogs or my grandma's dog. Like my German Shepherd, Diezel. I always play with him the most, like fecht or just jumping around with him. I also love Maxine a Cane corso, an Australian shepherd. Don't let my dogs’ looks fool you. They are really lovable.

I understand being quarantined is stressful, and it's hard when you try to do homework, but you HAVE to try. Remember when you are quratiend always do your homework, join a Google Meet, email your teacher, ask your parents, or a friend.

Never give up on your work and remember to keep your grades up. Always have faith and don’t be scared to ask for help.

Remember:your teachers are here to help if you need them. This is how to be safe, have fun, and have your best furry friend with you. Please stay safe and have fun!

Halloween haunts hide around the corner

by Samantha Reams

BOO! Guys, Halloween is coming up! Everyone does something different for Halloween, from staying in and eating candy and watching horror movies, to trick or treating through your neighborhood.

This year, 8th graders Liby Hurst and Peyton are going as witches. What are you going as? My friend Jocelyn Wilson is going as a zombie cheerleader. Sounds horrific!

For Halloween I usually go over to my cousin’s house, and we go to the A&M apple orchard. They have this haunted trail and hay rides. It's really cool!

Have you ever been to a haunted trail? They're super scary and fun! At Manlove Campgrounds Trail, I walked past the bloody tracks. There was always something to jump out and grab me! The scariest thing that happened when I went was when the huge net tripped me and the creepy Viking grabbed my arm, I actually screamed.

If you ever go to a haunted trail, never run; they will chase you! I know from experience.

From staying in and watching movies to going out and trick or treating, any way you spend your Halloween will hopefully be fun and tricky!

Besides keeping up with school work, 8th grader Samantha Reams spent some time feeding her baby goats during her quarantine.

Quarantining in 2021: survival guide

by Samantha Reams

In present times, Covid seems to be taking over, so many of us are being quarantined. However, I know we can all get through this. I, for one, honestly don't like learning from home because it can be really stressful. Many of us realize that learning face to face, in real life, is better because you can take notes, and there aren't any distractions, such as our phones or TV. However, paying attention and being responsible are very important and easy if you're dedicated to work.

Some advice is to follow my lead. Instead of playing on my phone, I get my homework for the day done. Being at home and doing school work is really stressful, even if you have meetings. Hands-on learning is easier because you are looking at the teacher in person and you're able to ask questions, and they will most likely answer your questions, in real time.

It is hard to stay concentrated, but once you learn the process, you’ll be wowed by how easy it is.

A plus side to being quarantined is that after all your homework is done, you can do anything you want! So go ride your bike, or jump in your pool, or maybe even go play frisbee with your dog.

During my quarantine time, I haven't really done anything exciting. I usually do my homework then go outside and feed my goats and play with my dog. When my goats see me coming out back, they start going crazy because they know that I´m about to feed them. My goat, named Lucky, tries to wrestle, and it is actually really fun because wrestling a goat is odd! After I play with my goats I usually go inside and binge watch my two favorite shows on Netflix: Outer Banks and Manifest. They are very entertaining and suspenseful.

Quarantine does stink, but you can get through it. It actually goes really fast if you keep yourself motivated and busy. Stay safe, though, and remember to try new things, because before we know it, we will be sitting at school not worrying about getting exposed or sent home, away from all of our friends. Pretty soon we will look back and just be like, ¨Wow I'm proud of myself for getting through that!¨

FCMS recognizes significance of Patriots Day

by Dakoda Keith

My name is Dakoda Keith, and I am here to explain what 9/11 is about, as well as to tell the students about what happened after 9/11.

On September 11, 2001, the Twin Towers went crashing down, a group of Al Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and planed a suicide attack. Two of the four planes crashed into the Twin Towers, the third plane hit the Pentagon, and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. About 3,000 people died during the 9/11 terrorist attack.

When the World Trade Center went crashing down, it was at 8:45 a.m. on a Tuesday morning. A jet crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center, located in New York city. That ended up trapping hundreds of people in the higher floor and instantly killing thousands of people. As people started to evacuate the North Tower, 18 minutes later, another jet hit the South Tower, causing an explosion that's when America knew they were under attack.

Soon after that the American Airlines Flight 77 circled over downtown Washington, D.C., before crashing into the west side of the Pentagon military headquarters at 9:45 a.m. A jet from Boeing caused a devastating inferno that led to the structural collapse of a portion of the giant concrete building, which is the headquarters of the U.S. The Department of Defense.

All told, more than 100 military personnel and civilians were killed in the Pentagon, along with all 64 people aboard the airliner.

It is very important to recognize the people that past in 9/11, and that is why we have a day for the remembrance of the people that died in the 9/11 attacks: a very sad day in American history. That is why we have a remembrance day: to honor the first responders and police officers. Thank you all for your service.

FCMS has definite opinions about hamburger toppings. From left to right, Casey Mitchum, Mrs. Dishman, Mrs. Mitchum, and Michael Oglesby weigh in about their favorites.

Hamburger Day, May 28th, survey results are in!

by Andrew Morgan

Since the last day of school, May 28, is Hamburger Day, a survey at FCMS asked which hamburger toppings were liked best. The kids and teachers both answered the question.

Jayden Martin replied, “I like cheese the best.”

Casey Mitchum answered, “Lettuce is definitely the best topping.”

Isaiah Kemp responded, “Tomatoes hands down are the greatest.”

Michael Oglesby stated, “Pickles are my favorite topping.”

The teachers had much more detailed answers than the students.

Mrs. Mitchum replied, “My favorite toppings are lettuce, mayonnaise, mustard, and onion.”

Mrs. Dishman exclaimed, “I love the deluxe burgers with cheese, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, and mayo!”

Mrs. Noah stated, “Bbq and cheese are my favorite toppings.”

It seems that the students and teachers have diverse tastes. Which topping is your favorite? Regardless, enjoy Hamburger Day next week!

Star Wars

The Force provides memorable characters to keep us coming back and away from the dark side

by Andrew Morgan

Star Wars is a big franchise, with four movies making over a billion dollars, and one exceeding two billion. However, the money would be nothing without the storyline and great characters to prompt fans to flock to the theatres in droves.

The first movie revolves around the Trade Federation blockading Naboo, a peaceful planet. The Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, try to negotiate with the Viceroy, who throws everything in the book at them, and they escape by stowing aboard army transports.

They meet a Gungan named Jar Jar Binks, who is indebted to the Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn. They rescue and take the Queen to Tatooine, where they meet Anakin Skywalker, a young boy who wins them new parts for the Queen’s ship. Bureaucracy leads the Queen to return to her planet and take it back, with the help of the newly-befriended Gungans and their army.

These Gungans are very proud of themselves, living in an underwater city. They help when the Queen affirms that they don’t think that the Gungans are under them. I think that they do have their flaws but are nice allies when prompted to be.

In the next movie, the queen becomes senator, and she is attempted to be assassinated twice. Obi-Wan Kenobi tracks down the assassin and finds that a clone army of the assassin is being made for the Republic.

The senator returns to her home planet with her old friend Anakin Skywalker, then goes to Tatooine to find Anakin’s mother. They then travel to Geonosis, where Jedi and clones rescue them. She and Anakin then get married, which for a Jedi is highly illegal.

Jedi are taught to love, but aren’t allowed to love someone. For example, Anakin is horrible at flirting. Quotes that illustrate this include, “I don’t like sand.”

“I killed them. Every single one of them!”

“Just being around her again is… intoxicating.” The last quote was said in front of his Jedi master, Obi-Wan. Needless to say, he wasn’t impressed, as well as definitely weirded out. I think that Obi-Wan is demanding of Anakin, much more than he should.

The third movie sees Anakin and Obi-Wan, who are now more like brothers, rescue the Chancellor, who has been kidnapped by Count Dooku and General Grievous. Dooku is killed, while Grievous escapes.

Grievous travels to Utapau, where he sends the Separatist leaders to the planet of Mustafar. He is killed by Obi-Wan, and then the Jedi are wiped out. Anakin turns to the dark side and murders the Separatists.

He is injured, and Palpatine reconstructs him in a suit, transforming him into Darth Vader. I think Vader is evil, ruthless, and obedient to his master, Palpatine. Vader is a shell of his former self.

Dialogue here is memed on the internet.

Such memorable quotes include “Hello there.” “General Kenobi.” “Hold on, this whole operation was your idea.” General Grievous was an exceptional military leader, and he did his best when dealing with the political side. Obi-Wan was a better character, seeing as he did not criticize Anakin all of the time.

In the fourth movie, princess Leia Organa tries to deliver plans of the Death Star, a massive battle station capable of destroying entire planets, to the Rebel Alliance.

She is intercepted by Darth Vader, but not before she can send the plans off with R2-D2 and C-3PO. The droids are bought by Luke Skywalker, who takes them to the Rebels with Ben Kenobi, with Han Solo.

Ben tells Luke to shoot the weak spot in the Death Star, and it explodes.

Obi-Wan is a guiding figure to Luke, and I think that he is a better one than his Uncle Lars.

In the fifth installment, the Rebel Alliance relocates their base to the ice planet of Hoth, where Ben tells Luke to go to Dagobah and find the Jedi Master Yoda.

When Luke arrives, his ship submerges into the swamp. An eccentric alien tries to steal from them, but Luke lets him take his food and flashlight after he promises to take them to Yoda.

Yoda turns out to be this alien, but he hesitates to train Luke. After Ben convinces Yoda to train him, Luke runs away from his training to rescue his friends, who have traveled to cloud city.

When they arrive, Han’s old friend Lando Calrissian greets them but sells them out to the empire.

Han is frozen in carbonite and is taken to Jabba the Hutt. Luke duels with Vader and is subsequently rescued by Liea, Chewbacca, Lando, and the droids.

Once Vader sees his son, he mellows out. Before this, he has killed his subordinates, but when one messes up, he spares his life. Luke has lost his hand, and is very confused when Vader tells him that he is his father.

In the sixth movie, Luke Skywalker, Leia, Lando, Chewbacca, and the droids rescue Han Solo, killing Jabba the Hutt in the process.

The Rebels stage an attack on the second Death Star, while Luke learns that Leia is his sister and Vader his father.

Luke meets the emperor and redeems his father, and he kills Palpatine, and the Rebels win the day.

Star Wars is an adventure that can be enjoyed by all ages. Whether you watch it religiously or periodically, you can look at the characters as teachers of important subjects. Star Wars is a fun experience that can teach a lesson in bravery and integrity to all who watch it.

Staff and students alike agree that soft pretzels are always a tasty treat.

However you like your pretzels, enjoy them on National Pretzel Day, this April 26th

by Lacy Davis

April 26, 2021 could be a very fun day for people who like pretzels, as National Pretzel Day falls on Monday, April 26th!

I asked some students if they liked soft pretzels, hard pretzels, pretzels with or without salt, and pretzels with or without cheese. I, for one, like both: hard pretzels with salt and without cheese and soft pretzels with salt and a little bit of cheese.

The majority of people said that they like soft pretzels. For instance, Madesyn Sunderhaus exclaimed, “I like soft pretzels with no salt and with cheese!”

Another student named Colin Troyer stated, “I like soft pretzels because they are way better, they are warm, and they are good in salsa.”

I asked a Kenadie and she stated, “I like them both, and I also like salt on both of them.” A lot of students seem to like soft pretzels but not all of them.

A couple of teachers stated their personal favorite, such as Mrs. Wade, who exclaimed, “I love soft pretzels with cheese, the saltier the better, and also it’s my favorite thing to get whenever I go to a ball game!”

Another teacher, Mr. Huber exclaimed, I like soft pretzels with cheese, and I like them because they are warm.”

Mr. Sanders proclaimed, I like them soft, warm, and lightly salted.”

I think it’s safe to say that a lot of people prefer soft, warm, salty, and cheesy pretzels over hard, baked, and crunchy pretzels. Both pretzels are very delightful and make for a good snack. Happy pretzels day, and don't forget to stock up on soft and or hard pretzels!

Offer a random kindness and celebrate World Kindness Day this February 17th

by Olivia Clark

Every year on February 17th, we celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day, but have you ever wondered how it became a holiday? Well, Random Acts of Kindness was first a foundation that was created in Denver, Colorado in 1995. Then it was transferred to New Zealand and made into a holiday by Josh De Jong in 2004.

Now that you know a little bit about the history, how can we celebrate the day? We’ve got a few teachers and students that told me how they celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day.

Mrs. Fultz exclaimed, “ I like to help kids, greet kids by holding the doors to the library.” But what is one thing that she remembers doing that was very kind? “Well, the day where we had to hold the students in the classrooms and they couldn’t go to lunch, I gave them some extra food to hold them off,” she recognized. Overall, Mrs. Fultz admitted that she grew up having to be kind. Consequently, when she does kind things she doesn’t realize it because it’s just in her nature.

Eighth-grader Mackenzie Brzezinski explained, “I enjoy helping my siblings with homework when they need it. I also like to help around the house for my parents.” Mackenzie also shows kindness every year because she donates to a kid named Jared in Kenya, Africa.

Seventh-grader Cierra Perry is also a very kind person. Cierra confessed,“ I enjoy helping my teachers, family, and friends. I like helping my teachers by passing out papers and helping my family with chores around the house. Also during the winter, I enjoy helping birds by setting out bird feeders around my yard.”

We all should show a little kindness to the world even when it’s not a holiday. Random Acts of Kindness Day was not only made to show kindness for one day but to show everyone that being kind can make a difference in one’s day. So how about today you show some kindness like holding a door or giving them your last piece of gum!

These 8th graders all share a disappointment in some aspect of Super Bowl 55. From left to right: Josh Wilson, Makayla Randall, and Bailey Kaiser.

Super Bowl 55 disappoints a few FCMS football fans

by Kenadie Powell

After playing football for three and a half hours this past Sunday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 in Super Bowl 55. Let's hear what the students at FCMS think about it.

Eighth Grader Bailey Kaiser commented, ”The chiefs stunk, and they could have gotten their act together; I wanted the Chiefs to win because Patrick Mahomes is my favorite.” Bailey also remarked, ”I didn't watch that much. Maybe five minutes at the most.”

Dakota Keith, 7th Grader, reassured, ”Patrick was good, and I wanted the Chiefs to win.” Dakota also watched the halftime show. He mentioned some of it to us. “I thought the halftime show was great and fun to watch,” he remarked.

According to Makayla Randall, 7th grader, she disagreed with Dakota, explaining,” The halftime show stunk. It was terrible, and I didnt like it at all.” Makayla added, “I wanted the Bucs to win. The Chiefs had a terrible defense and just let the Bucs win.”

Makayla mentioned that Tom Brady was her favorite football player, but 7th Grader Josh Wilson thought otherwise. Josh stated,” Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback and my favorite. I'm just mad because he didn't score a touchdown, and neither did the team.”

Did you think that this game was fair? Seventh Grader Jocelyn Wilson declared, “I guess the game was fair and square, plus its just a game. People shouldn't get mad because it's not that important.” Jocelyn added that she wanted Patrick to score a touchdown because he was the quarterback.

Looks like students of FCMS had similar and different preferences on the Super Bowl 2021! Maybe students will like the outcome of next year’s Super Bowl.

It's raining snow! A great day for National Umbrella Day

by Paige Ripberger

Did you know that even though the month of February has Valentines’ day in it, there are also a variety of different holidays in this month?

There is one holiday that sticks out the most: Umbrella Day. This holiday is today, February 10th. National Umbrella Day is to honor the humble umbrella from shielding the human race from the elements of the Earth all year long.

In the 18th century, umbrellas became a very popular fashion accessory for women. Men would even carry around an umbrella in many countries, such as Europe. Umbrellas have been around for many, many centuries. In fact, during ancient times, umbrellas were used by the nobles and by the rich. They were also used for religious ceremonies and rituals.

How would you celebrate Umbrella Day, you ask? Well, there are many ways to honor the umbrella, such as watching a movie that features an umbrella, get a non-alcoholic drink with an umbrella in it, go to the beach and relax under an umbrella. You could also learn about the history behind them,or even buy an umbrella. Even if you already have one, it’s good to have a backup one.

Why in the world would anyone even care about National Umbrella Day? There are many reasons why. We asked students around school to answer this question. Some of them had something to say.

“I feel like it’s meaningful because the weather can be harsh sometimes,” Deziree Dowers, 8th grader, explained.

Eighth grader Madison Weaver added with hopefulness: “I wish I were honoring the umbrella by relaxing on the beach and not having to do my homework!”

Kenedie Powell, also an 8th grader, added, “I’m happy to honor the umbrella by using it to shield me from the rain.”

Fun fact: people actually believe that opening an umbrella indoors brings bad luck. Umbrellas are very helpful to the human race. We need them more than we realize. Just think: our ancestors may have used umbrellas for centuries. No matter how old we get, we still use them. Enjoy this special day today!

Student have definite views on whether or not it's wise to be a fan of Valentines' Day. From left to right, Hank Buckler, Brandon Willis, Cody Bolser, and Lucy Lautz all agree that the chocolate is the best aspect of the holiday.

Valentines' Day--love it or despite it, the big day is coming up

by Kylie Welke and Kate Fain

Valentines’ Day is coming up, and some students are just not feeling it, while others are excited. Students at FCMS are having mixed feelings about February the 14th. What is your opinion on Valentines’ Day? What do you enjoy most? Let’s hear what the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders have to say about Cupid´s big day.

Sixth graders Hank Buckler and Jacob Brewer say that they aren’t the biggest fans of Valentines’ Day. However, Hank states that he enjoys the delicious chocolate. Who could blame him? Who doesn’t like chocolate?

Jacob Brewer’s answer is a tiny bit different. Jacob enjoys going out and partying with his friends. Good for him, knowing that it’s always okay to go out and enjoy spending some time with friends. Just don't forget to social distance and wear a mask!

Now let's hear from the 7th graders at FCMS. 7th graders Sol Simons, Brandon Willis, and Cody Bolser agree on the same thing. They all dislike it. Cody explained, ¨I would much rather enjoy spending time with my closest friends.” Meanwhile, Brandon very much misses the parties his teachers in elementary would throw. Surely everyone could remember those exciting days when finally getting to hangout with friends, eat tons of food, and watch movies.

It seems 8th graders have varying opinions about this holiday. Eighth graders Rianna Gegner, Cali Pea, and Lucy Lautz, for example, have differing opinions.

Lucy says she loves chocolate because she thinks chocolate has a romantic feel and is delicious.

Cali says, on the other hand, says she enjoys Valentines´ Day because she gets to spend it with her friends and family. Cali remarked, ¨I like valentines´ Day because I love to spend time with friends on Valentines’ Day because they get to talk about everything that they got and who their valentine is.”

Rianna has a different opinion on everything else about February 14th. She likes some aspects but does not like others. The chocolate and flowers are the most her favorite; however, Rianna doesn't like Valentine's Day because she would much rather spend time with her friends than be all ¨lovey dovey”.

Of course Valentine's Day is originally meant to be a romantic day, but FCMS students have varied opinions on how the Feast of Saint Valentines’ Day should be spent. Some feel It's important to show oneś appreciation to others and spend time with family and friends. The chocolate is just a plus!

The student council is selling suckers at lunch in the office, so feel free to stop on by to get your crush or a friend a delicious treat, which will be delivered on Friday the 12th to our 8th period class. The suckers are $1. There are so many different flavors to get! Don’t miss out! Whether you love it or hate it, we hope you have an amazing Valentines’ Day!

Believe in it or not, Friday the 13th is upon us

by Callie Ward

Horror movies are not for everyone, but if you like horror movies, you probably watched Friday the 13th. It might frighten you to find out that November 13th is a Friday.

Friday the 13ths don’t happen very often (about every 212 days). The last Friday the 13th was March 13, which was the last school day before Indiana schools were shut down because of COVID-19.

FCMS students seem to be wary about the upcoming day based on this scary movie.

Tatum Beesley, 8th grader, recalled, “I have watched the movie, and when Friday the 13th happens in real life, I feel spooky.”

Eighth grader Ava Moore commented, “I have never seen Friday the 13th, but when the day rolls around, there is an eerie feeling. Everything about the day feels a little creepier.”

“Well, I usually feel a little uneasy during that day,” remarked Chloe Wilson, 8th grader.

Some of the FCMS students don't seem to give a thought that this day is any different then their regular, everyday school day.

“I hate horror movies, so I have never watched Friday the 13th; therefore, the actual day isn’t different from any other day,” Daxton Ivey, 8th grader, remarked.

Eighth grader Wyatt Tilton noted, “I never really got around to watching the movie, but they day doesn't really mean anything to me.”

Lucy Lautz, also an 8th grader, acknowledged,”I have watched the movie more than once, but for me there are no strange feelings I have noticed.”

Carsyn Patterson, also an 8th grader, stated, “I’m not allowed to watch scary movies. I personally think people thinking that Friday the 13th the day is special is kind of weird.”

In conclusion, a lot of people have vastly different opinions of the movie and the actual day. Let’s hope there is nothing unlucky this Friday!

Bengals still hopeful for late-season victories

by Ryan Lloyd

I thought the Bengals would have a better record this year, but it seems that their offense of line and defense have had some trouble. The Bengals are 2-5-1.

They lost to the Titans for their first game, and they also lost to the Browns twice, tied with the Eagles, and lost to the Ravens.

The Bengals won against the Jaguars. Yesterday, the Bengals played the Titans again and won 31-20.

Their offense was playing really well against the Titans. Giovani Bernard scored two touchdowns.

Tyler Boyd had a touchdown. During their second game against the Browns, they lost by 3. The score was 37-34.

Before Week 8 happened, the Bengals traded one of their defensive linemen for a new offensive lineman. The Bengals also received a new safety. His name is Vonn Bell. Before Week 7, Joe Mixon, the Bengals running back, had an injured foot and could not play in Week 7.

In week 8 Joe Mixon still couldn’t play so he had to miss another game. Joe mixon might return in week 9. The Bengals also have four other players that are hurt: one of the players just has an illness, one has a concussion, one had a sting, and the other player had a hamstring.

If the Bengals can win at least 3 or 4 games, they will have a better record, and if they can win more games, they might have a chance to go to the playoffs.

This past Sunday when the Bengals were playing against the Titans The commentators were saying that Joe burrow is the first rookie to ever pass for 300 yards. The game that Joe Burrow passed for 300 yards was in Week 7 against the Browns.

Hopefully the Bengals can turn around and get their record better. In Week 9 the Bengals will play the Washington football team on Sunday. If the Bengals offensive line plays well, and the defense improved, the Bengals should get their 3rd win of the season.

At last--opening day is almost here

by Chloe Wilson

Before the sun rises, you get up out of bed and throw on some clothes and take some extra downstairs. You drink some hot chocolate or coffee and empty the rest into the thermos, and then you grab your backpack and utensils and walk out the door as the sun begins to rise.

But why? Why on such a specific day would you do this? Well because it’s Deer Season Opening Day! That’s right--on November 14th, many hunters will wake up early and head out, hoping to get that 13-point buck.

Why is there such a specific day for it? Why can’t a person hunt all year round? And why do they get up before the sun rises?

Well, it’s because of how deer act and their mating season. If you are a hunter, you are going to want to hunt during these times because the deer are out more and are in their best shape right now.

You aren’t going to want to try and hunt for deer in the winter because they are rarely out, and if they are, it’s only for a short period of time, and that’s to try and find some small pieces of food.

And finally, in the spring, it’s mating season. Many deer have babies, so it’s cruel to take a mother from a fawn in need. In the summer many of them are still growing and still raising their fawns, so the same rules apply, and during these times is when bucks shed their horns.

So in the fall is when there is plenty of food to eat. Besides, at this point of time, they are trying to find places to shelter up for during the winter. And as I said before, their horns should be either growing back or completely back.

The reason for waking up so early is because of the fact that it’s harder for the deer to see you, and it gives you plenty of time to get to where you need to be and get settled in.

In addition, it also gives any animals that you may have spooked--such as squirrels or any type of bird--time to calm down and forget you were there.

But while you are out there, you might wanna bundle up! It’s already cold enough during the day at this time of year, so imagine what it's like early in the morning! Burrrr!

I suggest wearing an underlayer, such as long johns or some sweatpants and some long sleeved shirts. Then either put on some thick camo pants or some bibs to cover yourself up even more and blend in better.

There are some safety precautions that a hunter has to take while hinting. For example, when you are in a deer stand, unless it is boxed in all the way around, you should have a safety harness, in case you accidentally fall off the tree stand.

And then there is gun safety. When carrying a firearm, you should always have it aimed at the ground or resting on your shoulder, pointing the barrel at the sky.

Also, if you have a partner or partners, you should never point it at them. Moreover, your firearm should always be on safety unless you are aimed and ready to shoot in case something catches the trigger and pulls it.

But don’t let any of this scare you. Hunting is a very fun activity to do, especially when you get your first deer. It’s even more so when it’s a big buck that you can mount on your wall.

Hunting is also proven to be healthy for the hunter. For instance, being in the woods has been known to sooth a person, clear one’s head, and also help one become more aware of one's surroundings.

If you follow these safety lines and tips you should be able to have a great hunt and get yourself a good deer: one in which you can be proud!

Despite the bubble, NBA season does not disappoint

by Austin Robinson

The Lakers win the NBA Finals! The Lakers win the NBA Finals! LeBron James gets his 4th ring, and the Lakers finally tie the Celtics for championships won at 17 each, making them the first ever team to win the championship in the NBA bubble!

The Heat, which were only the 5th seed from the East, put up a valiant effort, with Jimmy Butler having two of the best games of his career to win against the Lakers twice in the playoffs. Jimmy Butler’s 2nd game, which wasn’t as good compared to his other triple-double game, showed his true potential with his stat line being 35 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists, and 5 steals.

This was only one of his incredible games in his playoff run. In his best game he had 40 points, 13 assists, and 10 total rebounds. Butler was the only player ever to do this in a playoff game, along with LeBron James and Jerry West, who is the model for the NBA logo.

Besides these wonderful finals playoff games, we had a few more surprises that happened during the playoffs. Starting off in the Eastern Conference, the Houston Rockets almost lose, letting the Oklahoma City Thunder take them to 7 games.

The Utah Jazz and Denver Nuggets were going back and forth, also taking their beginning round to 7 games, with Denver ultimately winning. The LA Clippers were the favorite team going into the playoffs, and everyone was very eager to see the two Los Angeles teams go head to head in the conference finals.

The Clippers were able to beat the Dallas Mavericks in 6 games and got a 3-1 lead on the Nuggets in the second round, but the Nuggets prevailed and came back beating the Clippers and going on to the conference finals.

In the conference finals, the Lakers and the Nuggets went head to head, a very unexpected situation. The Lakers got up 3-1, and everyone was anticipating the Nuggets to make a major comeback but the Lakers beat the Nuggets in 5 games and advanced to the NBA Finals!

Now, let’s move on to the Eastern Conference. Over in the Eastern Conference the Miami Heat, who had just gotten Jimmy Butler for their star player, blew out the Indiana Pacers 4-0, and there were a lot more blowouts in these playoffs.

In a very surprising turnout, the young Boston Celtics team demolished the Philadelphia 76s 4-0. Philadelphia was another fan favorite team, having two star young players: Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

The Toronto Raptors blew out the Brooklyn Nets 4-0 yet again, since the Nets’ star players and two of the best players in the league, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, were injured before being able to go into the bubble.

In the second round, in an extremely surprising set of events, the Miami Heat beat the Milwaukee Bucks 4-1, after the Bucks’ star player and one of the best players in the league, Giannis Antetokounmpo, rolled his ankle twice.

Next, in a very close match up, the two young teams of the Celtics and the Raptors faced each other going to seven games, with the Celtics winning 4-3. In the conference finals for the East, the Heat beat the Celtics 4-2, with the Heat advancing to face the Lakers in the NBA finals!

But enough about the playoff season. You’ve already heard my analysis about the finals. Now let’s slide onto the postseason with the draft and free agency.

First, in a shocking state of events in the 2019-2020 season, the Golden State Warriors’ two best players, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, went down with injuries, sidelining two of the best 3-point shooters in the NBA.

Because of this, GSW only won 15 out of their 82 games this season and got the second pick in the first round, with the only team above them in the draft being the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Now the main attraction for the draft would be what GSW is going to do with this pick. Golden State has a whole world of options that they could do to improve their already championship-contending team.

Everyone already knows that the Timberwolves are going to draft Anthony Edwards, a 6’3” shooting guard who is an excellent finisher and a very good shooter.

But now what is Golden State going to do? They are already an extremely good team and with this pick, they can improve their team even more. One choice that GSW could do would be actually using the pick to draft one of the top rookies.

LaMelo Ball is one of the top prospects and brother of Lonzo Ball, who is definitely a possibility for GSW to draft--either by moving Andrew Wiggins to the bench or putting him at power forward while moving Draymond Green back up to center where he used to play, and putting Klay Thompson or LaMelo at small forward and leaving Stephen Curry at point guard GSW could have a very strong lineup.

In my personal opinion, the most logical choice if they draft someone with their pick would be to take 7’1” center James Wiseman. Wiseman is a very special center in the sense that he’s very explosive and can get up and down the floor quickly, which would be perfect for GSWs’ style of play, which relies on a lot of ball movement and speed around the court.

Wisemen isn’t the best 3-point shooter, but he isn’t bad either, considering that Golden State has the two best 3-point shooters in the league. Wisemen's height and his 7’5” wingspan make him an excellent defender around the rim, something that Golden State really needs.

One thing that would be very interesting is Golden State trading this pick for a few very good players or even trading down to get a good extra player to help out their team.

Obviously, everyone wants to see Golden State trade for a superstar player like Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, or even Giannis, but let’s be realistic. There is no way Golden State would be able to get Ben Simmons with that trade, let alone Giannis, for whom they wouldn’t even have enough cap space since Giannis is up for a supermax contract, the biggest possible contract one can get.

A more plausible trade would be trading to the Phoenix Suns for Aron Baynes and the 2020 10th pick or even replacing that pick for someone else to help support Golden State. In all reality, with this pick Golden State needs to be looking for a solid center and maybe even a backup wing player or even a backup center to go along with their newly acquired center.

Enough of the draft. Now we’re going to free agency! This year's free agency isn't all too interesting. The biggest star player out of every player in free agency would be Anthony Davis secondary star to LeBron James on the Lakers, but everyone already knows that Davis isn't going to be leaving LA.

The biggest people this free agency besides Davis would be Gorden Hayward on the Celtics, DeMar DeRozan who is currently on the spurs, and Paul Millsap who currently plays for Denver. Now the best choice for Hayward would be to stay on the Celtics. He's on a very well-rounded, young team that made the playoffs and got into the conference finals.

It's a different story for Demar DeRozan. If he wants to even make the playoffs, then he's going to need to go to a different team where he can still shine and be impactful, but he also has other star players around him helping him win.

A place like that would be somewhere like the Brooklyn Nets, who have two all-star players with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, and if they were to acquire DeMar and add him to their starting lineup, DeMar could make a big impact and even increase their chance of winning the NBA finals.

For Paul Millsap, it's the same as Gordon Hayward. He should stick with his current team. Nikola Jokić, Jamal Murray, Michael Porter, Jr. and Paul Millsap were all able to beat out the rest of the teams in the Western Conference and make it to the finals.

If Paul Millsap does stay, Denver already has two stars in Jokić and Murray, but the Nuggets could attempt to sign another star from free agency, such as getting a good backup center in Andre Drummond or even a backup small forward with Otto Porter, Jr.

The NBA was very interesting this season, in spite of having to shut down and then having the NBA bubble appear to restart our season, with only the top few teams making it in.

Besides all of the chaos that had happened with the NBA, this offseason, like most offseasons, could be very intriguing, and we might even see some teams get even better or worse than before. Who knows? Maybe the NBA bubble will disappear and we’ll be back to normal basketball.

Bengals look to turn it around and salvage season

by Ryan Lloyd

The Bengals’ season has been a little rough. Their record is 1-4-1.

Their first game they lost to the Tennessee Titans by 3. Their second game they played the Browns, and lost, but they played a great game, and the score was 30-35.

Their next game they played against the Philadelphia Eagles. They were going back and forth, and the The Bengals were winning, but the Eagles scored a touchdown and tied the game.

Both teams went into overtime. They were going back and forth once again, but neither team could score. During overtime both teams tied.

In week four Joe Burrow was determined to win this game. The Jacksonville Jaguars scored a field goal in the 1st quarter, later in the first quarter, the Bengals kicker, Randy Bullock, ended up kicking a 35 -yard field goal and nailed it.

Then the Jaguars scored a touchdown and had 10 points, making the score 10-3. The Bengals running back Joe Mixon scored a touchdown by hurdling a defender into the touchdown! The announcers proclaimed that this touchdown was Joe Mixon's first touchdown since 2013.

The Bengals were tied with the Jaguars. Later in the game, the Bengals kicked a field goal and then another field goal. The Jaguars ended up kicking a field goal, making the score 16- 13.

Next, Joe Mixon scored nearly a 40- yard touchdown run and boosted the Bengals’ lead. The Jaguars scored another field goal.

Then Joe Mixon gets another touchdown, to boost the Bengals lead even more. The Jaguars scored another touchdown. At the end of the game, the Cincinnati Bengals got their first win of the season.

It was also Joe Burrow’s first win of his NFL career. Furthermore, Joe Mixon won AFC Offensive player of the year.

The Cincinnati Bengals will be playing the Baltimore Ravens, and it's one of their biggest games of their season. Two seasons ago, the Bengals defeated the Ravens and had a really good game. The Bengals will play the Indianapolis Colts in week 6, next week after this week against Baltimore. The Bengals lost to the Ravens because the Ravens’ defense was too good. The Bengals tried their best to score on them, but all they did was score a field goal, and the final score was 27-3.

Hopefully, the Bengals can turn everything around and win a lot more games.

Halloween--it's the best time of the year for candy-filled indulgence

by Austin Robinson

Let’s face it: candy is the best part of Halloween, unless of course you like to dress up more. Everyone loves a good few Snickers bars or a good, peanut buttery Reeses Cup, but which Halloween candy is the best?

We asked ten students and teachers from both FCMS and FCHS to try to get to the bottom of which Halloween candy is the best

Mrs. Wade, our lovely FCMS journalism teacher and librarian, stated, “My favorite Halloween candy is a Snickers bar, any size! Also, I love candy corn. I wish I could eat it year-round.”

Ben Simmermeyer stated, “My favorite Halloween candy is KitKats because of the chocolate coating.” That's one mark towards KitKats, now tied with Snickers bars.

Peyton Varn, one of our FCMS students said, “Milk Duds because of the caramel.” That's the only mark that we have towards Milk Duds.

Heather Philpot remarked, “Smarties because I always eat them with my brother.” One mark to Smarties and hopefully not the last!

Abigail Stephens, a student at FCHS, declared, “My favorite Halloween candy would be pumpkin corn that is candy shaped. They are a really sweet and tart candy, and they are my favorite, but they make you sick quickly but it’s worth it. I binge on them all Halloween long.” That's the first of many likings of candy corn.

Elaina Hamilton proclaimed, “My favorite would be Jolly Ranchers. They have more flavors, and they aren’t too sweet.” Theirs is the one answer for Jolly Ranchers. Many were hopeful that these hard candy treats would do better in this competition.

Levi Cregar exclaimed, “I’d say candy corn, because it’s not only a classic, it also has a nice texture and flavor.”

Jillian Plummer, another FCHS student, declared, “My favorite Halloween candy is Skittles because I enjoy fruit candies.”

Elizabeth Hamilton explained, “I’d probably say candy corn because my stepmom and my dad would always get it for us, and I would sit in my papaw’s lap and eat it with him. It was one of my fondest childhood memories.” Another mark for candy corn, which is in the lead.

Kaiya Taylor remarked, “Well, my favorite Halloween candy would be candy corn. The reason is that since I grew up with it, I’ve always liked it, and I guess I just never got tired of it.”

In a landslide Halloween victory, candy corn wins our mini-competition. Which Halloween candy is your favorite and why does it beat out the rest of these other candies? No matter what candy satisfies your sweet tooth, enjoy this Halloween!

For energy and intelligence, there is nothing quite like a mountain cur puppy

by Chloe Wilson

Mountain Cur puppies--ever heard of them? Well, they are hunting dogs by nature. Although Mountain Cur were originally designed for squirrel hunting, many people today use them as decoy dogs.

This is the first time that my family has ever had puppies, and wow, are they a lot to take care of! My family recently received two puppies: one for me and one for my brother.

My brother’s puppy is a little female named Star. She was the runt of the group. My puppy is a male named Bash. He was the biggest of the group.

Mountain Cur pups are very intelligent. They figure things out quickly and are also very loyal. Moreover, they are hunting dogs by breed, so it would not be wise to use one for a house dog. Mountain Curs are very energetic and can bark quite a bit, and they need space to run around. Consequently inside isn’t the best idea.

Contrary to popular opinion, most people do not use Mountain Curs for squirrels anymore. Many people use them to hunt coyotes.

How do Mountain Curs serve as hunting dogs? A hunter calls in the coyotes by using a howling machine or even a simple mouth piece once to make the coyotes aware that there may be a threat, potential mate, pup in distress, or even some food in their territory.

A howling machine is a speaker that produces loud sounds such as a rabbit in distress, a pup in distress, and many more sounds.

A mouthpiece is a piece of fabric with rubber, like a balloon, molded into a specific shape, size, and thickness, depending upon what kind of 'caller' is used.

Next, the hunter puts it on the roof of his/her mouth and blows out, and after some practice, a person should be able to make any noise the howling machine makes.

Once a hunter gets the coyote close enough, the next step is to send out the decoy dogs. They are supposed to make the coyote mad and want to chase after them.

After that, with, specific collars, the hunter will push a button causing the collars to produce a beeping sound, which is supposed to let the dogs know to come back to their owners. While doing so, it will lure the coyotes into shooting range. Once the dogs are safely back with their owners, the hunter will fire.

In order to do this, however, a hunter needs to train their dogs to understand when they are to come back when they hear the beep sound.

The dogs also need to know that they are only allowed to chase coyotes and nothing else. So in order to do this, it requires a lot of training, which is what my family is doing at this time period. Most dogs are not allowed to go out and actually do anything without at least a year of training and experiences.

When pups are only a couple of months old, many Mountain Cur puppies are starting to experience their shock collars. Most of the dogs are supposed to understand how to sit when it is asked of them, stay when it is asked of them, and when they are supposed to come back and when they are supposed to attack.

Mountain Cur puppies are adorable bundles of pure energy that can knock a person down easily. But they are also very loyal and smart, so if you are looking for a energetic guard dog or hunting dog, a Mountain Cur is the right dog for the job.

At last!

NFL season is finally underway

by Ryan Lloyd

Football is a popular sport in which thousands of people watch and support their team.

Football will be back soon, and hopefully it won’t be shut down like the NBA did when the Covid-19 virus came to the United States.

NFL teams are already starting practices, and it’s going really well. The NBA is having games and practices, and they're doing well so far. Hopefully it’s the same for the NFL.

Last year the NFL celebrated 100 years of the NFL. The NFL season should start in September or October.

As for our local team, the Bengals went 2 and 14 last year, and they drafted a new quarterback. His name is Joe Burrow. They also acquired a new wide receiver, whose name is Tee Higgins. He's a lot like A.J Green, but he can catch better than him. Higgins is also the 6’3, just like A.J Green.

My favorite NFL team is the Bengals. I hope they can at least get in the playoffs and possibly win the Super Bowl. A while ago Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes signed half a billion dollars to play with the Chiefs again.

Hopefully the NFL does not get shut down so all the NFL fans, including me, can enjoy the NFL season.

Pit bulls can make perfect pets

by Bryce Millsaps

Hello, this is Bryce, and I'm here to ask you to think about pit bulls as great pets. Pit bull is a term used in the United States for a type of dog descending from bulldogs and terriers.

Most people are terrified of pit bulls and believe that they are the meanest dogs on earth. Well, responsible pitbull owners think they are the sweetest dogs. Pitbulls are sweet because they love to play, get their heads rubbed, and they love to give kisses. I also think that pit bulls are only mean if they have bad owners.

The reason I like pit bulls is because there are four different breeds of pit bulls. My favorite is a blue nose pitbull, which is a type of American pitbull terrier. The reason they are my favorite is because, in my opinion, they are the prettiest dog ever. Another reason I love pit bulls is because they love people, and they are really good with children.

Some pit bulls are really good guard dogs because if someone threatens their owner, they can attack the antagonizer. Another good reason is that when someone tries to come onto one’s property that is not supposed to be there, the dog will attack.

Another reason I really like pit bulls is because they are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. I also like pit bulls because one of the most famous dogs in the world is a pit bull. His name is Hulk, and he's not a fictional character .

Those are the reasons I love pitbulls and why they are my favorite dog breed. Thank you for reading and considering the American pitbull terriers, one of the best and most loving dog breeds ever!

With knowledge and safety, ATVs can provide tons of fun

by Ethan Herbert

Going 60 mph through the ramps, around the berms, and into a tabletop, ATVs are amazing and fascinating vehicles. There are many different brands to turn to that make quads. Just a few are Honda, Kowasaki, Polaris, and even KTM. The brand that is most famous for their motorcycles also makes quads for brand new: about $15,000.

When it comes to picking the perfect quad for you, it all depends on your experience riding, where you're riding it at, riding conditions, and if you're going to race it, use it on a farm, or playing in the mud.

Assuming you’re an experienced rider and you want to ride it for racing, the best brands would be, a Honda TRX450R, a Yamaha Raptor 660/700, or a Honda TRX400EX. Honda makes really durable quads that are great for having fun around the yard or riding on a track.

If you’re an experienced rider looking for a quad for the mud, then I would recommend you get a Kawasaki Brute Force 750 or a Can-Am Renegade X mr 1000R.

For new riders, a good starter quad is a Falcon 90. The quad doesn’t have a ton of power under the frame, but it will get kids used to riding something. A Suzuki LT 50 is also a good quad for little children who haven't ridden quads for very long.

On ATVs there is a sticker usually on the right front fender that says if you're under 16, you shouldn’t ride it as a recommendation because of the possible injury to occur for a quad crashing. However, you can buy riding gear. Chest plates, padded pants, knee pads, boots, a helmet, and riding gloves will all protect one from hitting a tree, flying over the handlebars, or ramping and jumping off.

If you are an adult or a teen, a good starter quad would be a Polaris 300, a Honda Recon 250, or a Yamaha Bruin 250. You can buy these quads at the dealer of the brand. For example, a Polaris 300 you can get them either on their website or at the Polaris dealer.

Many people do not know how to ramp correctly. What you have to do on any ramp is you have to stand up on the quad pressing the throttle and let the quad ramp on its own. If you continue to sit down on the ramp, the rear of the quad will push all the weight of the quad on the back, and when the back tire gets off the ramp, it will act like a slingshot, forcing the rider to nosedive into the ground, possibly injuring the rider or severely damaging the bike

Many people also drift wrong. When drifting, make sure it is in loose ground or mildly wet. If you're drifting on a right turn, the rear end of the quad will swing to the left and vice versa. What to do is to lean all your weight to the right to prevent rolling the quad. If the rider does not, there is a chance that he/she will pick up traction and either flip the rider to the other side, or the quad will not drift--either no drift or a flipped quad.

When in reverse, do not go fast! If a rider goes too fast, he/she can potentially lose control of the quad and wreck. If you're going downhill, the best thing to do is jump off. If not, and you turn, the quad will turn way faster than you think and you will either crash into a tree, or the quad will throw you off the ATV.

There are quads that you should and shouldn’t ramp. My quad, a 2006 Polaris Hawkeye 300 ex, is, unfortunately, one that's not supposed to be ramped but was apparently done so too many times. The effect for that was a rear broken frame, a broken rear hub, and a broken rear rim. Any utility vehicle, such as a Honda Foreman 500 should not be ramped or it could result in broken parts such as axles, hubs,-- or for much more expensive fixes--the frame.

The quad you do want to ramp, however, is a track quad. A good example of this is a Honda TRX400EX or a Yamaha Blaster 200. Since they weigh less, you can ramp them with less worry of damaging the axle or tires.

The best riding conditions are when it is dry outside. Consequently, the rider will not have to clean his quad every day because of the mud. There is no mud to get in the quad to cause it to grind and rust easy.

The worst riding conditions are when it is rainy then snowing within a 24-hour period. This is because it is super cold and the engine will not want to start easily. To fix this, turn on the choke and let sit for a few. Then when you get to riding, it will be super cold and wet. Try not to get wet. If you do, you will start to get super cold due to the low temperatures.

All depending on how experienced with driving a quad you are, what conditions you live in, and how you plan on riding, will tell you what ATV you should buy.

This reporter was inspired to appreciate Corvette's from a photograph of a similar car in which her grandfather previously owned.

Corvettes are still a sight to behold

by Cameron Richmond

Hi, I'm Cameron, and I'm going to tell you why I love Chevy Corvettes. I became interested in Corvettes at the age of 12 because I always thought that Chevys were one of the coolest cars I’ve ever seen.

When my grandpa told me that his first car was a Chevy Corvette, I was surprised. He said that the color of his Corvette was black with neon green flames, and he said it was the best car he ever had.

“I bet it was a great car!” I exclaimed.

From that moment on, I became interested in Chevy Corvettes, Camaros, and Silverados.

The original Corvette logo featured the classic checkered flag, crossed with the American flag.

Haley Earl, the designer of the Corvette, designed his roadster under the name “project opel”. The original target price was 2,000. The first Corvette retailed for $3,513 in 1953.

There's a bit of resemblance between early Corvettes and the Jaguar xk120, due to Haley Earl drawing some inspiration from the classic Jaguar.

The Corvette has been produced in three different cities: Flint, Bowling Green, and St. Louis.

Myron Scott, who worked as a photographer for Chevrolet, named the Corvette after a small warship back in 1933 for 22 years.

The original 1953 Corvette offered only 2 options: a heater for $91 and an AM radio for $145. Back then, a Corvette with all the trimmings would set an owner back a total of $3,749.

The beginning of 1964, the Corvettes no longer had a split back window because of its interference with the driver’s rear view.

Since 1955, all Corvettes have offered nothing but V8 engines. In fact, in 2012, Corvettes accounted for nearly 1/3 of all sports car sales in America.

The Corvette is the only vehicle to ever have a “wrap-around” windshield.

The 1978 Corvette Indy 500 Pace Car was painted black and silver because it photographed better. Back then, most publications and ads were black and white.

Due to federal laws, the 1980 Corvette had an 85 mph speedometer. The 1979 Corvette was the highest production year for the Corvette, with 53,807 units built.

The classic and bulky grill “teeth” and rear lights shaped into rear fenders were not included in the Corvette’s design after the year 1960. The 2009 ZR1 was the first Corvette to be pushed over the 200 mph mark.

Owners of Corvettes are lucky to have such a nice car. The airbags on the driver’s seat became a standard feature in the 1990’s models of Corvette. Anyone who finds themselves behind the wheel of one of these beautiful rides is lucky.

If you didn’t know, I want to grow up and get a good job and get a Chevy Corvette. In fact, I recently told my mom that I want to get a Chevy Corvette and a job at the Chevy store on the way to Harrison.

You should work hard, and one day you could own a Corvette too.

With time, education, and love, pit bull rescues can make great pets

by Cameron Richmond

Have you ever thought of having a pitbull? Well, I have here are some tips on how to take care of pitbulls.

The first tip on how to take care of a pitbull is socialization. You are teaching them about the world around them, much like you would a human child. They learn from experiences.

The second tip on how to take care of a pitbull is training. Use positive reinforcement when you train your pitbull Focus on teaching them, rather than a negative result.

Establish dominance but being fair and firm. Your dog should realize that you are the leader and that the dog must obey you. Leash train your dog and stop biting before it starts. Never hit your dog.

The third tip on how to take care of a pitbull is feeding. Pit bulls should, ideally, be fed high quality food such as Blue Buffalo or similar brand with lots of protein.

The fourth tip on how to take care of a pitbull is health care. You should always get caught up on shots, heartworm pills, and get flea treatment if they have fleas.

Here are some reasons why you should have a pitbull: one reason is to have a pitbull is because they were originally bred as guard dogs. However, pitbulls aren’t, by nature, good guard dogs because they just love people. Yet they may intercede if someone threatens “their” humans.

Pit bulls are great with newborns, toddlers, teens, and young adults. Pitbulls are a loyal people-oriented breed that thrive as a part of the family. Often pit bulls are affectionate with both young adults and children.

The second reason to have a pitbull is they don't have the strongest bite. Actually, German shepherds have the strongest bite.

A second reason to have a pitbull is because pitbulls are not inherently aggressive dogs. In fact, in temperance tests, pitbulls are the second most tolerant breed, behind golden retrievers, and the least tolerant is actually the Chihuahua.

And here is the last reason to have a pitbull: they have a lot of great attributes, including being great climbers. Pitbulls can climb walls over 12 ft. tall.

Among other amazing physical attributes, pitbulls also happen to be fantastic climbers.Their incredible strength and agility allows them to scale walls other dogs wouldn’t dare.

Pitbulls are known as therapy animals. It is a fact that the pitbull makes an excellent therapy dog. Their natural love for people, their eager-to-please attitude, and their ability to withstand pain give them the innate ability to be tolerant in situations where some dogs may not be so tolerant.

They crave human attention and do not do well left alone for long periods-of-time. Pitties are believed to be stubborn. In reality pitbulls are sensitive pooches whose feelings get hurt.

They were once known as the American family dog. The American pitbull is a companion and family dog, originally bred to “bait” bulls. The breed evolved into all-around farm dogs and later moved into the house to become the “nanny dogs” because they’re so gentle with children.

It’s important for owners to be physically fit, as pitbulls can weigh up to 174 pounds.

Fun fact: did you know that pitbulls can also be police dogs in some states?

Another fun fact: they used to be a mascot for the US Army. They are also working in search and rescue, as pit bulls are useful for sniffing jobs.

Pit bulls were known as the “nanny dog”. In the early 1900s pitbulls were given the title of “nanny dog” because they were known to be faithful, loving, and loyal, especially when it came to children.

Pitbull breeds are strong, intelligent, and courageous. Their main goal is to please their owner.

The American pitbull terriers fall under the “pit bull” category. However, the American pitbull terriers is still not an accepted breed by the AKC.

In conclusion, you might consider adopting a pit bull if you have the time, love, training time, and a loving home. If so, you will benefit from having these friendly companions as a part of the family.

Martinez Twins take over Youtube as latest sensations

Hey, have you heard of the new YouTube sensations? Their names are Emilio and Ivan Martinez.

Emilio and Ivan first started YouTube at the age of 16. The twins are now 20 and making music for their career.

The first song the twins came out with in December of 2016 was “That’s my Lambo”. The next song after that was, “Fake Friends”.

Emilio and Ivan were born on May 10th, 1999, in Barcelona, Spain.

When the twins were 15, their dad left. That’s when Emilio, Ivan, Rebecca, and their mom moved to Los Angeles, California.

And if you don't know Rebecca, she is the Martinez twins’ older sister. She lives in Knoxville, North Carolina, but she visits her brothers and her mom every other month.

While growing up in L.A., the twins were in Team 10, which stands for Teen Entertainment Media Kingdom.

The Spanish twins officially quit Team 10 on November 30th, 2016.

The Martinez twins had their first video out on July 28th, 2016.

The Spanish twins are now working on their two new songs: “Maknae of BTS” and “Jungkook FoFo”.

Here are some fun facts that their fans should know: Emilio has a freckle above his upper lip, and Ivan has two small scars on his forehead. To tell them apart, one can see that Ivan’s chin is smaller, and Emilio’s is more round.

Emilio has a curved lip because he injured it from falling.

In addition to YouTube, the twins are also popular on Instagram. Emilio has 4.6 million, whereas Ivan has 4.1 million followers on Instagram.

I think you should start watching the Martinez twins on Youtube!

It's never too late to take up fishing

by Aydyn Patterson

Hello everyone, this is Aydyn here, and today I am discussing the topic of fishing. Fishing is a very fun sport in which almost anyone can enjoy, yet it is also a very tricky sport.

You may be asking, ¨What makes it so tricky?¨ Well, you need to know what to use and how to use it. Equipment that you use involves a fishing reel and fishing rod. In addition, you need a good lure or bait, and it is very important you have good fishing line.

Firstly, you ́ll need a good rod and reel. You ́ll need one that will fit the type of fishing you ́re doing. For example, don't use a catfish rod and reel while bass fishing. Use a bass setup.

Usually for bass you´ll want a smooth reel and a not-too-long rod. Why? You don't want to use a long rod in a spot with a bunch of trees because you will get stuck on a tree. You can purchase rods at Cabelas, Bass Pro Shop, Dicks Sporting Goods, or Dunham's Sports, etc.

You will need a reel that is smooth because when bass fishing, you cast your lure and reel it back in slowly.

For catfish you will need a bigger pole and reel. You need this because catfish put up a good fight, and you don't want your rod to break.

For reels I recommend Shimano or Ugly Stik. Also, I would recommend these for rods too. You can also purchase these rods at places such as Bass Pro Shop, Cabelas, Dunham's Sports, Rural King, Dicks Sporting Goods, etc. Reels generally cost $20-$100. Rods cost this much also. But rods and reels together cost more than that, depending on the kind and quality you get.

Secondly, you need good lures or baits. Some recommendations I have for bass fishing are crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, plastic worms, poppers, whopper ploppers, and frogs.

All of these lures you cast out and reel in at a medium pace, except the popper and whopper plopper. For these you cast out and reel in a bit and jerk to make them pop on the top of the water.

For catfish I recommend chubs as bait, but also for catfish you need a heavy sinker and a good sized hook. If you don't know what a chub is, they are small creek fish. To use them, you will hook them right in front of their eyes and then you will push them up the hook and overlap their tail. After this you will set them on the ground and step on them to release all the air pockets. You do this so they won't float.

Thirdly, you need good fishing line. It is the worst thing ever when you are reeling in a big fish and your line breaks and the fish gets away. But this most likely won't happen if you have good line. Line is either test, braid, or monofilament.

I recommend braid, although it is expensive. Line costs $6-$30. For beginners, test line is a great line also. Line also comes in different poundage. This means they are suited for the fish you are after. You can buy line at Cabelas, Bass Pro Shop, Dicks Sporting Goods, Duhnams, etc.

Finally, you need a good spot at which to fish. Picking out a spot all depends on what you are fishing for. For bass you will fish in a pond or a lake. You can fish for bass in a river, but I don't recommend it.

I don't recommend it because rivers have a current, and when you bass fish, you use moving baits and don't want them going down the river. For catfishing you would most likely go in a river because your bait is heavy enough that it won't move that much.

I hope this article changes your fishing game for the rest of your life, or maybe, at least, it will get you into fishing. Thank you for your time and happy fishing!

Christmas movie faves find their way into our hearts

by Serinity Wright

Christmas is just around the corner, which means it's time for all the Christmas movies to come on television. Seventh grader Brendin Kolter stated, “Charlie Brown Christmas is my favorite Christmas movie because of when Charlie’s friends cheer his tree up, and he could make it beautiful.”

Christmas is made for cheer all around, and 8th grader Shayden Thompson mentioned, “Christmas is wonderful because I get to watch my favorite Christmas movie, The Grinch, because he is funny.”

Christmas movies are wonderful and are good for sitting back and relaxing. For example, Paris Presson likes to kick back and watch her favorites. Paris declared, “I like Home Alone because Kevin was really smart when he made all the traps.”

Fun fact: The famous Christmas movies that everyone loves made big sales when they first came out such as Home Alone, which made $286 million in 1990 when it came out.

Here are some more: How the Grinch Stole Christmas, $260 million, 2000; The Grinch, $253 million, 2018; and The Polar Express, $186.5 million, 2000.

Today people still buy or look for Christmas movies, such as eighth grader Logan Spurlock, who stated, “Lost in New York Home Alone 2, I like at the end when Kevin's big brother yells at him for making the hotel bill so high.”

Fun fact: watching Home Alone has become a Christmas tradition in Poland, airing on national television since the early 1990s. In fact, in 2011, a re-run of Home Alone was the most watched show of the season.”

Fun fact: The half hour program had a budget that was almost unheard of at the time. It cost $300,000 to make How the Grinch Stole Christmas!--or about $2.2 million if it were made today. To compare, A Charlie Brown Christmas cost only $96,000.

Concerning The Grinch, 8th graders Sophia Minniti and both Audrey Harper mentioned, “We like the Grinch, and our favorite part was when he was either stress eating or when the fat reindeer lay on the Grinch.” Christmas movies are great and are overall an enjoyment to watch all the time and are a perfect choice for a family fun night.

Carsyn Patterson ́s favorite song is ̈Blue Christmas ̈, by Elvis Presley.

Mrs. Dishman ́s favorite song is ¨White Christmas ̈ because it brings back fond childhood memories.

Mrs. Nobbe ́s favorite song is “Walking in a Winter Wonderland ̈. She stated, ̈It's something I used to sing to my kids when they were young, so it brings back good memories.”

Paul Harrelson ́s favorite song is ̈Jingle Bells ̈ because it makes him feel good.

Mrs. Middendorf ́s favorite song is ̈Let it be Christmas.¨ She proclaimed, ̈I like the melody and the meaning of it.¨

Mrs. Dowd's favorite song is ̈Baby It's Cold Outside ̈ because she likes the tune of it.

Savannah Nelson favorite song is ̈Mistletoe ̈, by Justin Beiber. She likes it because it's a good song, and she likes Justin Beiber.

Mr. Sells ́ favorite song is ̈O Come, Emmanuel.¨ He explained, ̈It ́s been my favorite since I was a kid. ̈

Dakoda Keith proclaimed, ̈Jingle Bells ̈ is my favorite song because it's a good song!¨

Chloe Lake declared, ̈I like ̈Jingle Bell Rock ̈ because it has a good tune!¨

Whether you like the old carols or the new Christmas tunes, just listen to whatever makes you happy!

When is it too early to decorate for Christmas? FCMS weighs in on the debate. From left to right: Claire Maxie, Branson Russell, Mrs. Nobbe, and Savannah Nelson state their views on the annual subject.

Turkey or tinsel? When is the right time to decorate for Christmas?

by Maggie Gabbard

Do you think it’s too early to decorate for Christmas before Thanksgiving? Let’s see what FCMS teachers and students think.

Mrs. Dishman replied, “No, because it’s the spirit of the season, and it shouldn't be limited to one time a year.”

Mrs. Nobbe suggested, “Yes, because I want to think about what I'm thankful for, for Thanksgiving.”

Mrs. Helen Gillman offered, “No, because my mother died a couple of years ago and she loved Christmas, so I put my Christmas things up for her and for myself.”

Mr. Sells responded, “Yes, because Christmas is special, and if we keep pushing it out farther, it feels less special.”

7th grader Claire Maxie declared, “I don't think it's too early for Christmas because it's December.”

7th grader Savannah Nelson stated, “It's never too early for Christmas, it should come faster.”

Branson Russell explained, “It's not too early for Christmas because it's like 20 days from now.”

Everyone has different ideas, but whether you think it's too early for Christmas or not, hopefully everyone has a Merry Christmas!

From left to right, Mrs. Fultz loves it; Mrs. Dishman tolerates it; and Claire Maxie finds a cup of apple cider thoroughly unappealing.

It's the most wonderful time of the year for apple cider!

by Serinity Wright

Apples are being picked, and spices are churning, as the smell of apple cider soars through the air. Apple Cider Day was November 18th, but we can appreciate the spicy drink all year around.

Students and teachers at FCMS know apple cider very well, but some specific teachers are known to love it, such as Mr. Sells, who mentioned, “I grew up with the cheap stuff, but when I grew up, I started loving the apple cider the orchard made.”

Others just dislike it in general. Carter Dozier, 6th grader, stated, “It's just hot apple juice.” A lot agree with him or either just forget apple cider is even still around.

It might not have been around as a treat when growing up. For instance, Mrs. Dishman mentioned, “It's not my first choice in a drink.”

So not everyone is interested in apple cider and may be like 7th grader, Claire Maxie, who claimed, “It’s disgusting, and I don't like the way it tastes.”

7th grader Madison Rose declared, “It's okay. I would have never drunk it if my brother hadn’t shown me it.” A lot of people almost never drink it but think it's all right nevertheless.

If you've never tried apple cider, I recommend it for a cozy drink, especially if you like cinnamon. Mrs. Fultz mentioned, “I drank it some growing up, and growing up we drank warm apple cider in the winter.”

Apple cider is a drink full of spices, but whether it is a pleasing taste is debatable. Eighth grader James Kitchen debated, “Its okay, but I almost never drink it because it's not that good.”

So just remember: apple cider is a healthy drink, but you don't have to like it and if you’re an apple cider person, get warm and buy some apple cider. It’s getting cold outside!

FCMS is looking forward to a little relaxation. From left to right, Luke Rosemeyer, Chloe Lake, Mr. Doug Deters, and Mrs. Lisa Robinson all have plans over fall break.

Stressed out? Fall break is right around the corner!

by Maggie Gabbard

Now that October is coming up, both teachers and students are looking forward to fall break. Even though fall break isn't until October 21st, many are already making plans.

Mr. Sells beamed, “I'm going to Gatlinburg for fall break, renting a cabin, chilling by the fire in the mountains, hiking up mountains, and eating

1,000,000 burritos.”

Mr. Deters noted, “I'm going fishing and taking my wife to Tennessee, probably going to have a few camp fires.”

Chloe Lake declared, “I am going to Tennessee for fall break with my family.”

Lisa Robinson put in, “I'm going to Florida for fall break!”

Luke Rosemeyer confessed, “I'm going to Lake Erie and going fishing and camping.”

Mrs. Dishman stated, “My daughter just bought a house so I get to help her paint and move in.”

Blake Smith replied, “I'm going to play my guitar around town.”

Hopefully everyone has a great time on this upcoming vacation!

Liz Wendel, above, and Izabella Quinlan, right, took advantage of the Friday the 13th superstition by attempting to frighten those around them.

Friday the 13th with a full moon

Frightening Friday or silly superstition?

by Chloe Clark

This past Friday was a special night: not only was it Friday the 13th, but it also was a full moon.

The last time there was a full moon on Friday, the Scientists believe there won’t be another full moon until Friday the 13th in 2049! The moon this year is called a micro moon because it will appear 14% smaller because of the distance to Earth and because it is almost October this means that this full moon is a harvest moon. What all this math and science is saying is that it was a PERFECT night to scare friends or family.

Izabella Quinlan, an 8th grader, declared her Friday plans: “I’m babysitting tonight. I’m going to try to freak out the kids by watching scary movies and reading them scary stories.”

“I’m going to the high school football game tonight, and I'm going to scare so many people,” proclaimed Liz Wendel.

Even though Friday was perfect for sneaking up on someone and screaming “BOO!” in their face and laughing so hard until you can’t catch your breath, some people spent a regular evening with friends or family, like what Mr. Sells had planned. Mr. Sells explained this he is going to his friends’ birthday party tonight.

With similarity, Mrs. Klusman coached cross country and then picked up and dropped off her children.

Whatever your plans were for this Friday the 13th, the next time around, just make sure you stand clear of black cats who cross your path and definitely watch out for werewolves!

Students love any tasty holiday, especially involving marshmallows

by Serinity Wright

Guys, today is August 30th. Do you know what that means? It’s National Toasted Marshmallow Day!

Sol Simons stated, “I like them roasted on a stick so they are gooey.”

Cole Freese’s opinion was, “I love it when there soft and golden brown.”

People may or may not be found of marshmallows, but they don't taste too bad for most people’s choice of sweets.

However, Lillie Huddleson claimed, ”I like them with chocolate, with warm gooey marshmallow.” Students have all sorts of opinions, such as Trevor Grundy, who stated,” I hate marshmallows. They make me sick.”

As we can see, not everybody has to like them.

Maggie Gabbard expressed, “They are sweet, but I like them toasted because they are even sweeter and soft.”

Kenny Jaydee concluded, “Roasted over a fire till it’s on fire.”

Marshmallows all depend on the way they are eaten for how they taste for middle schoolers at FCMS. Whether they are gooey or frozen, be sure to enjoy those marshmallows and celebrate this tasty day!

Pokemon is worth a reboot

by Timmy Brennan

Do you still play Pokémon? Many FCMS students still play this addictive game. The Pokémon games have been around since February 27, 1996 and have become super popular--so popular that everyone knows the name of Pikachu, the furry yellow mouse.

Since Pokémon Red and Green versions, Satoshi Tajiri's goal was to let people of all ages to catch and train 151 different species of Pokémon.

And now that dream has grown into what Pokémon is now, with 807 different species and counting. In fact, Pokémon Sword and Shield will be coming out on November 15.

When Pokémon Red first came out, you, the player, was a young boy named Red from Pallet Town who needed to catch every Pokémon to complete the Pokedex.

Today, as in the past, in all the Pokémon games, you start out fresh and pretty weak, but once you get strong enough and you beat the game, you start looking for the strongest Pokémon: Mewtwo. Mewtwo is a human made psychic Pokémon that is so strong that it can pick up a Wailord, which is a 877.4lbs, and throw it 10 yards with its psychic powers. Mewtwo is also able to mega evolve, which let the Pokémon evolve past its bonderes.

The creators of the game are always adding new teqneces like mega evolution, Z-moves, and now there is a rumor about armor evolution. The creators always make these new techniques so that players will always have a trick up their sleeves.

So if you do remember this game, think about playing again. There are probably new Pokémon techniques for you to try out

Seventh grader Ryan Seal plans on eating pizza, his favorite dish, on the 11th.

Given the chance, Paul Harrelson, 7th grader, would eat all of the spaghetti, he wanted on May 11th.

On May 11th, it's okay to eat what you want

by Allyson Miller

Do you ever wish there was a day in which you could just eat whatever you want? Well, to your luck, there is.

May 11th is national Eat What You Want Day. No matter what it is, if you want it, eat it.

Many students and staff members would jump at the chance to eat whatever they wanted.

Eighth grader Grace McConnell stated, ¨If I could eat whatever I want on this day, I would choose to eat $1,000 of spaghetti. I love this idea because I love eating.¨

Trever schnitker, 8th grader, remarked, ¨I would probably eat Starburst wrappers because I heard they are edible, but I’m not allowed to try.¨ He said he loves this idea because it gives him an opportunity to eat anything.

Seventh grader Matthew Bohman explained, ¨On this day I would choose to eat chicken, and I think it's a great day because everyone can eat what they want.¨

The art teacher, Mr. Deters, commented, ¨If I could eat anything, I would eat fried bluegill. I also think this is a great day because it gives me the opportunity to eat whatever I choose.¨

Lauren Stacy, 8th grader, remarked, “If I could I would eat anything I wanted, I would eat pizza. This day is great because I love food.¨

Paul Harrelson, 7th grader, stated,¨I would eat spaghetti on this day, and I like the idea of this day.¨

Seventh grader Ryan Seal explained, ¨On this day I would eat pizza, and I definitely would enjoy this day. ¨

So what would you eat on this day? It could be anything at all.

If there is something you've always wanted to eat, then May 11th is the day for you!

Novel review: Scythe provides a page-turning thrill

by Gary Valley

Scythe, a novel by Neal Shusterman, is weird but enjoyable. It’s a young adult dystopian, but strangely, it actually has a unique concept and isn’t a clone of other young adult dystopias, such as The Hunger Games. Scythe is an indicator that not everything has to be the same, with its theme being that individuality is important.

The plot is as follows: it’s the future, and all of humanity’s qualms and problems have been cured. Death and disease have been conquered, and the government has been replaced by the Thunderhead, a sentient supercomputer that runs the future United States. Since death by human diseases or causes is basically rendered nonexistent, population control falls on to the scythes, a group of people whose job is to kill people to keep the population down.

When the scythes kill, their victims actually die, unlike other people, who just go temporarily dead...and then have the ability to be revived at hospitals called revive centers.

Two young adults, Rowan Damisch and Citra Terranova, both have encounters with the honorable Scythe Faraday, who recruits them into apprenticeship, even if they don’t necessarily want to be scythes.

Rowan Damisch came from a very large family, with him being just a middle child. His motivation is for his entire family to get immunity. As for for Citra Terranova, she comes from a small family and also wants her family to have immunity. They also both become friends. However, when they are forced to compete, the protagonists think their worries end there, but little do they know, something much worse is brewing.

The plot is interesting and well thought out, and the characters are pretty developed and fleshed out. It can be a little slow at times, but when it gets going, it doesn’t stop. It makes you really want to turn the pages, to see what happens next, so it’s pretty swell in that regard.

The villain, however, is just mediocre. It’s a blatant good vs. evil situation, but a little disappointing, since the rest of the book is such a breath of fresh air and so creative. The readers know the power-hungry Goddard’s (the antagonist) motivation, it’s just that his motivation seems underdeveloped. The villain, Goddard, is evil just because he likes killing, so he does it a lot.

Overall, the book is an exciting page turner, and it only has two flaws. The first is that the villain and his posse are kind of uncreative, and while interesting, they aren't anything readers haven’t seen before.

The second is that the book starts off slowly, and the reader must be patient and wait for the plot to unravel. However, once the story really begins, readers are in for a treat. This book is pretty close to being a must read. If you are interested, this book is just the first in a trilogy, the other two books being called Thunderhead, which is out now, and The Toll, which will be out this December. I give this novel a 9 out of 10. Happy reading!

Mr. Derek Herbert and Patience Dunham have each given a rescued pet a forever home.

Adopt a pet to celebrate National Adopt an Animal Day this April 30th

by Kalibe Boots

April 30th is National Adopt an Animal Day. Each year, 2.7 million adoptable pets are put down in the U.S. because too many come into shelters, and not enough people consider adoption when looking for a pet.

Many students and staff know how important it is to adopt a stray.

Paige Ashcraft explained, “We would take in stray dogs mainly but also cats. We also adopted a dog from a shelter. It was a lab. We went to shelters and helped out with the creatures there.

Eighth grader Patience Dunham explained, “We adopted a puppy because she was just roaming around, and we didn’t want it to go to the shelter. We named it pig because it eats a lot.”

Seventh grader Dewey Lewis commented, “We adopted a dog that ran out in the middle of the road because we didn’t want her to get run over.”

Seventh grader Joseph Bommer explained, “We had a dog we adopted for 11 years, but it died two years ago due to old age. It was a golden retriever.”

Drake Sudhoff, 7th grader, exclaimed, “We got a cat from a friend because we were wanting an animal to adopt.”

Tech teacher Mr. Herbert, commented, “We have adopted a dog once because her mom was hit by a car, and we had to help her. We had to feed her a puppy bottle and raise her without a mother.”

When people buy pets instead of adopting them, more and more animals will be put down because of it.

By contrast, If we were to adopt animals instead of buying them, we save many animals at the shelters.

Celebrate National Adopt an Animal Day on April 30th by considering adoption or--better yet--go out and adopt a dog or cat that day to save one of the 2.7 million!

Celebrate or not? National Siblings Day is on April 10th

by Allyson Miller

Do you have siblings? If so, do you get along with them? Some of us wish we had siblings older or younger, and others wish we didn't have them at all. National Siblings Day, on April 10th, is a great day to celebrate those awesome or annoying siblings.

Eighth grader Grace Mcconnell stated, ¨Yes I have siblings, but I wish I didn't because I have to share everything.¨

Eighth grader Taylee Conrad also explained, ¨Yes I have siblings, but I would like it better without her because she always gets her way, no matter what.¨

Lauren Stacy, 8th grader, admitted, ¨Yes I have siblings but I don't really like him because he's annoying.¨

Unlike them,Trenton Lainhart, an 8th grader, enjoys having sibling around. He remarked, ¨ Yes I have an older brother, and I like having him because he can drive me places.¨

Seventh grader Isaiah Lee expressed, ¨Yes I have siblings, and I love having them because I can mess with them all the time.¨

Joseph Bommer, 7th grader stated, ¨Yes I have younger siblings, and I like having them because I get to bother them and scare them all the time.¨

Eighth grader Trever Schnitker explained,¨ Yes I have siblings, but I don't like having them because I have to share my room.¨

Whether they get on your nerves or you dream of having them, make sure you celebrate Siblings Day on April 10th!

Owen Matthew Darwish doesn't have strong feelings about his middle name.

Ava McKenzie Hedge and Cynthia Joe Willoughby are happy enough with the middle names they were given.

Like them or not, it's time to take pride in our middle names

by Kalibe Boots

Did you know March 10th was Middle Name Pride Day? It’s the day that you can appreciate your middle name and not be ashamed of it because you can also hear about someone else who might have a middle name like yours.

Fun fact: did you know the middle name Jordan is that of the chief river of Palestine, in which Jesus was baptized? Jordan originated as a given name in the Middle Ages, being bestowed upon those baptized in holy water and was said to be taken from the Jordan River.

Some middle names and meanings:

  1. The girl middle name is Rose; it originated in the middle ages.

  2. Alexander: Greek, meaning defender of men.

  3. A name for boys and girls is Jae, with its Latin origin meaning ‘blue crested bird’.

Many FCMS students are proud of their middle names, and some aren’t so proud.

Elijah Boots, 7th grader, explained “My middle name is Thomas, and the name Thomas is borne in the Bible by an apostle who doubted the resurrection of Christ. But what it means to me is that it is a memory to my childhood because i used to like thomas the train.”

Owen Darwish, 7th grade, stated, “My middle name is Matthew, but I don’t use my middle name that much, so I don’t care about it.”

7th grader Cynthia Willoughby exclaimed, “My middle name is Joe because it is from my Grandpa, and I like it!”

Ava Hedge, 7th grader, explained, “My middle name is Mckenzie, and I just think that it is just another middle name.”

Adam Mace explained, “I like my middle name, but I don’t use it for anything important.”

Blake King, 8th grader exclaimed, “My middle name is Alan, and it is in the middle of my first and my last names.”

Breck Bohman, 7th grader, stated, “My middle name is Kenneth, and I don’t use it; also, I don’t know the meaning, but if I look it up, I can probably find it.”

“My middle name is James, and I think it represents my family because it has been passed down for generations!” Wyatt Tilton, 6th grader, exclaimed.

Justin Billman, 6th grader, declared, “My middle name is Harold, and it is from my grandpa’s name.”

We should always appreciate our middle names because, like them or not, they will always be are a part of us.

Eighth graders Mason Brenton and Phoenix Simons would have loved the chance to celebrate National Nap Day.

Did you survive the time change? Maybe it's time for a nap!

by Max Dickey

Napping Day is an unofficial holiday that falls on the Monday after daylight savings time begins in the United States. Take a nap or two to celebrate Napping Day.

The day was created as a way to compensate for the hour people lose because of the time change.

This year it fell on Monday, March 11. Phoenix Simons is an 8th grader who agrees that a nap would be great because he is tired because of the loss of one hour.

Mason Brenton, 8th grader, exclaimed, ¨I'm tired, and I really want to just lie down and sleep for 3 hours!¨

Many people would really love to take a nap.

Mrs. Joyce Lake is also trying to let her body catch up with the time. ¨It takes a minute to catch up with the time. I've been trying to get to bed early to get ready for the earlier time,¨ she explained.

All in all, most students would love a nice nap to catch up with the time.

Now just what are these faculty members up to??? Come check out the Kiwanis Talent Show on Friday, March 15th, in the high school auditorium to find out! The good times start at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30!

St. Patrick's Day--there is more to March 17th than wearing green

by Kalibe Boots

A whole lot of people like to celebrate the day of green (a.k.a. St. Patrick's Day), but do they know the reason for the season? This date marks the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who was born in Maewyn Succat. St. Patrick is the reason for the season.

Did you know that Patrick was kidnapped at age 16 and brought to Ireland as a slave? It is believed that a voice came to him in his sleep and convinced him to escape, and when he was reunited with his family, he studied to become a priest and devoted the rest of his life to being a missionary for Ireland.

A cool fact is that he used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity.

In addition, people believed that he used the shamrock to banish snakes from the land. However, there wasn't even any proof that snakes even existed on the island.

Another fun fact is that St. Patrick's Day has been celebrated since before the Revolutionary War!

The first parade was held in 1762 by Irish members of the colonial army.

In addition, did you know that March 17th is also Corned Beef and Cabbage Day, National Quilting Day, and Submarine Day? It’s true!

Many students and staff have their own opinions about St. Patrick's Day.

One of the eighth grade social studies teachers, Mrs. Dishman, explained, “St. Patrick's Day is about the death date of St. Patrick. I think that they said that he banished snakes from Ireland or something like that.” Elijah Boots made a guess: “St. Patrick's Day Is a day about irish people and eating potatoes.”

Other staff members, such as Mrs. Baker, remarked, “The day is celebrated with a lot of green and the explanation of the Holy Trinity.”

Mrs. Fultz, on the other hand, recalled, “St. Patrick´s Day is about wearing green, or you will get pinched.”

No matter how we celebrate it, this fun March holiday is right around the corner!

Say 'aaah' and celebrate National Dentist Day this March 6th

by Max Dickey

Many FCMS students wouldn't be very excited if their parents told them the were going to the dentist. Nevertheless, National Dentist Day, on March 6th, is just a way of showing appreciation to dentists and to make people aware of dentistry. It's important for people to know the importance of dentistry.

Eighth grader Sasha Isaacs appreciates going to the dentist. She stated, ¨I like the dentist because I like getting my teeth cleaned. I think it is very important to go.¨

However, some people don't really like the dentist. For example, as 8th grader Taylee Conrad remarked, ¨I don't like the dentist because it is extremely painful, especially when they are numbing or drilling your teeth.¨

Eighth grader Alicia Kersey stated, ¨It's okay, but it's just really boring.¨

Most of the time when students go to the dentist, the receptionists have to sign them in and then patience have to wait for them to get done with all the paperwork.

Mrs. Fultz exclaimed,¨ It's all right, but I would rather not go. It can also be really expensive. I do think it is really important though.¨

Most realize that dental hygiene is very important. It is very important that you keep yourself healthy.

"I hate going to the dentist!" shouted Paige Ashcraft. “I do think it is very important to go though,¨ she added.

Braden Eggleston remarked, ¨I think it's very scary and boring. However, It's very important to go.¨

Makayle Shopher says it doesn't really bug her. But she would rather go than have rotted teeth.

It's really important to have a scheduled time to make your way to the dentist. Most dentists recommend visiting them about every six months.

All in all, most FCMS students are really bugged about the fact that they have to stay healthy by going to the dentist. People should celebrate National Dentist Day, whether they like it or not. However, dentists deserve a lot more recognition than they already get. March 6th is a great day to show them our appreciation!

Students eagerly wait funding and building of new town pool

by Braden Eggleston

Did you know that the Brookville Pool (Heap Memorial) has been out of service for two summers? What about the old pool, that leaked 35,000 gallons of water every day? The Brookville Town Council now has a plan for the future, and our students are looking forward to it!

The current Brookville pool is 57 years old, and it had many problems. In fact, one problem is that the pool was just too small and outdated.

According to plans, the new pool will be a zero-depth entry, contain two water slides, restrooms, and will have shallow end that will be handicap accessible. The price tag for this new pool is about $2.4 million.

To raise money, there will be lots of fundraisers. The date for the grand opening has not yet been determined.

Mr. Bundy, our principal at FCMS stated, “I have not gone to the pool, but my kids have gone.”

He also commented,“ The pool is going to be good for the youth to get outside and to have fun.”

Lendon Sizemore, an 8th grader at FCMS, stated, “I miss the pool a lot.” Lendon went there often, and he is very bored in the summer. Lendon also added, “The old pool needed work to it a lot.” Lendon’s favorite thing at the old pool was the high dive.

Andrew Harnishfeger, 8th grader at FCMS, declared, “ I miss the pool, and I like to swim.” Andrew is bored in the summer without the pool because there is no other pool. He also stated, “I’m excited about the new pool and a new place to swim.” Andrew’s favorite thing about the old pool were the diving boards.

Travis Schwartz, 8th grader, also admitted, “ I miss the pool and, I have nowhere to go.” Travis is bored because he says there is nothing else to do in the summer. He declared, “I am excited about the new pool because it’s a pool, and it’s new.” Like other students, Travis’ favorite part about the old pool were the diving boards.

Eighth grader Karly Bergin commented, “I miss the pool because it’s boring without one, and I don't have much to do in the summer.” Karly is excited about the new pool because it’s going to be better than just one slide.

She declared, “My favorite part about the old pool is that I could practice swimming, and I could hang out with my friends.” Karly also wishes that there would be a swim team because she would join it!

Eighth grader Evan Gibson remarked, “I miss the pool because I like to swim, and it was close by.” Like many students, Evan is currently bored in the summer because he liked to jump off the diving boards and misses the pool.

Olivia Bradley, a 7th grader, stated, “I miss the pool because I could go there to cool off and hang out with her friends.” She is not bored in the summer because she could go to her grandma’s house, but she knows others are also restless. Olivia declared, “I am excited about the new pool because I live close, and I can go there all the time.” Her favorite part about the old pool is the deep end because it helped teach her how to float better.

Students at FCMS are looking forward to the grand opening of the brand new Brookville Aquatic Center!

Ready for a nap? Public Sleeping Day is coming up--just don't do it at school!

by Allyson Miller

Have you ever just wanted to lie down somewhere in public and just sleep? If so, February 28th is definitely the day for you.

February 28th is National Public Sleeping Day, which is a day for anyone to take a blanket and pillow and sleep wherever he/she would like.

Eighth grader Grace Mcconnell loved the idea of public sleeping day. she stated, ¨yes, I absolutely love the idea of public sleeping day because I love sleeping.¨

¨I have definitely slept in public, at the movies and a restaurant waiting on my food,¨ 8th grader Madi Lake admitted while also loving the idea.

Eighth grader Karson Kelley also explained that he likes the idea of public sleeping day. He exclaimed, ¨Yes, cause when you're tired you can just lay down and sleep anywhere.¨

Trenton Lainhart also loved the idea. ¨I love that idea, and i've also slept in public, under a tree in the park,¨ he declared.

¨Yes, I like the idea because then I can sleep whenever and wherever I want,¨ Taylee Conrad explained.

Seventh grader Isaiah lee loved the idea as well. He also admitted to sleeping in public before, at a baseball field.

Joseph Bommer, as well as the rest, loved the idea. He stated,¨ duh I love the idea because sleeping is awesome.¨

Whether or not you are a public sleeper or someone who loves the warmth and comfiness of your own bed, keep February 28th in your mind because National Public Sleeping Day is a day for everyone to enjoy.

Adam Barrett loves the thrills of The Banshee at Kings Island

Thrill seekers can't wait for Kings Island to open

by Max Dickey

Kings Island opening day this season is April 20th! Most FCMS students seem to be very excited for the big day.

Eighth grade student, Hayden Newell, stated,¨My favorite ride is the Diamondback, and I'm very excited for opening day at Kings Island.¨ The Diamondback is the tallest ride in the park!

Trista McRoberts is an 8th grade student who loves Kings Island. Her favorite ride is the drop tower.

Many of us would never ride the drop tower. It's too scary!

Greyson Wilson is also very excited to finally be able to go to Kings Island again. ¨I LOVE THE BANSHEE!¨ she shouted. One thing that makes it so fun is all the loops,¨ she added.

The Bat is a ride that is very isolated. It is also Kobey Singleton´s favorite! ¨No one usually rides the Bat because it is so far away from all the other rides. So the line is always short,¨ he declared.

Robbie Simons declared, ¨I love the racers! They are my favorite ride in the whole park!¨

Mrs. Robinson remarked, ¨My favorite ride is the Whitewater Canal. I’m very excited for opening day ¨

The Whitewater Canal isn't a very popular ride because everybody freaks out over the ¨Banshee¨ or the ¨Diamondback”, but most people would enjoy this ride if they tried it.

Adam Barrett remarked, ¨My favorite ride is the Banshee.¨

Mrs. Beth Wade replied, ¨I love Kings Island! However, I am sad because my favorite ride, Firehawk, has been torn down.¨

Surely everybody is thrilled to go to opening day because the owners just rebuilt the front entrance for the first time since it was originally built. All in all, many FCMS students are very excited to get back to riding rides at Kings Island.

Webkinz--the latest game craze

by Elijah Dean

You may remember back in 2009, when you were begging your parents to get on the computer to check on Ruffles, your Webkinz dog. Well, you no longer need to ask for permission as Webkinz is now accessible by Chromebook. You can adopt a pet and care for it just like those bygone days from your youth.

Some of our FCMS students even have Webkinz of their own!

Seventh grader Megan Tomlin commented, “I like Webkinz because it can be educational and it also school friendly. It's also fun in general.”

“I like Webkinz because it's interesting and teaches responsibility,” stated 8th grader Dawson Hertel.

In addition, 8th grader Ryan Johnson exclaimed, “One of the main reasons I play Webkinz is because unblocked and it is fun and easy.”

So go adopt a furry (or scaly) pet and show it some love!

Like it or leave it, Valentine's Day is around the corner

by MaKayle Shopher

Most of us celebrate Valentine’s day every year, but do we really enjoy it? This is what the students of FCMS had to say about this much-loved or much-despised holiday.

“I think it’s just a holiday to celebrate our loved ones,” replied 7th grader Izabella Quinlan.

Eighth grader Nick Shaw answered, ”It’s a perfect waste of money.”

“I think it’s just full of loneliness, unless you have a date,” remarked 7th grader Serenity Wright.

“I hate Valentine’s Day. It’s been the worst holiday for me every year,” admitted 8th grader Joseph Gillman.

Seventh grader Madison Eversole responded, “I honestly feel like it shouldn’t be a holiday just because people have to go out and buy stuff for their date, or if someone doesn’t have a valentine to spend it with, it’s just dumb.”

Seventh grader Corbin Henson replied, “I think Valentine’s Day is good because everyone is happy.

“Valentine’s day is good because people can express their feelings,” remarked 7th grader Shannon Stenger.

“It’s not fun if you don’t have a date, but if you do, it’s good,” stated 7th grader Lena Powell.

Eighth grader Heaven Mcqueen commented, “It’s just a holiday.”

Eighth grader Madison Merritt replied, “I think it’s a good holiday so that you can show love to your friends and family.”

It seems everyone has a different view on Valentine’s Day. Whether we like it or simply put up with it, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner.

Eighth grader Robby Simon stated, ¨I once gave my dad a Reds baseball hat, which is his favorite team.¨

Seventh grader Eli Butt explained, ¨The best Christmas gift I have ever given was a trail camera to my grandpa.¨

“The best gift I have ever given anyone would have to be the clay pottery we make in art to my mom,” stated eighth grader Zach Hensley.

Eighth grader Dylan Ramsey exclaimed, “The best gift I have ever given anyone would be the paintings we make in art to my grandma!” Eighth grader MIchael Withrow explained, “The best gift I've ever given anyone would be to my aunt, whom I made an wooden bench for.”

“The best christmas gift I have ever given anyone was a Christmas ornament to my grandparents,” stated eighth grader Paige Ashcraft.

What's your favorite Christmas present to give someone? No matter what you give this Christmas, someone will appreciate it.

Christmas brings a variety of blessings

by Jayden Heffron

Sniff, sniff--imagine that you smell the cookies being baked for Santa, but you realize you never figured out your favorite thing about Christmas.

There are many lovely things about Christmas, but there is so much to choose from. Many people were asked their favorite thing about Christmas.

Jace Lee, an 8th grader at FCMS, commented, ¨Family is the most important thing on Christmas, because I love seeing them, and I don't see them very often.¨

Other people such as Hayden Koger agree, but Hayden explained, ¨What I favor about Christmas is seeing my family because I love hanging out with them.¨

There are many students who stated they loved seeing their family, but Jordan Reynolds loves seeing them for many reasons. He exclaimed,¨I love my family, I wouldn't be the same person without them.

Seeing family isn't the only thing good about Christmas. There is also food, but Mason Brenton dives straight for the cookies on Christmas Eve. Mason declared, ¨I love waking up in the middle of the night and stealing the cookies.¨

Brooke Bruns thinks the opposite. She claimed,¨ I love waking up in the morning and waiting to eat breakfast with my family.¨

Savannah Nelson is on the same path. She declared,¨Food is my favorite thing on Christmas morning.¨

Christmas is not just about family and food: it's about surprises and decorations as well. Gage Peugh, 6th grader, stated,¨My favorite thing about Christmas is being surprised with presents and not knowing what you're gonna get.

Brett Bischoff announced,¨I try to stay up all night and catch santa.¨

Brant Ertel is a little bit different. He commented,¨I love helping my dad put up lights because it puts me in the Christmas spirit.”

As you can see, there are many things to favor about Christmas, but only one thing can be your favorite. Regardless, it is still one of the best times of the year.

Christmas songs' beginnings may surprise us all

by Shelby Beneker

“Jingle Bells”, “Away in a Manger”, “Joy to the World”--all are iconic Christmas songs. Yet they each have their own origins that just may surprise you.

If you love Christmas songs as much as St. Nicolas himself, you will be disappointed to know that “Jingle Bells” was not composed to be a Christmas song. Even though we have been using “Jingle Bells” for 168 years, it was intended to be used during winter, not just Christmas.

Although the song is usually hated if it’s played before Thanksgiving, it can bring joy in the most unlikely of places. In 1965, two astronauts had called Mission Control to report that a satellite was about to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere. After a few agonizing moments, the astronauts started to compose a rendition of “Jingle Bells” with a harmonica and some bells that they had brought along. “Jingle Bells” was the first song to be broadcast from space.

Another song, ”Away in a Manger”, has two composers! Both Martin Luther (1483-1546) and Charles H. Gabriel (1856-1932) claim to have made the song, but they were centuries apart. Moreover, no one knows which language it goes to either. It seems that the lyrics were composed in English, then translated into German.

The last song on the list, “Joy to the World”, wasn’t intended to be a Christmas song either. It was written in 1719 by Isaac Watts, Lowell Mason, and George Frideric Handel. When Isaac was in his teen years, he thought the songs that he sang in church were too hard to sing. As a result, he made a new hymn every week for two years. In 1741, Handel polished up the poem into a song. Lowell Mason eventually put it to music and published it for the whole world to enjoy.

Now that you know the not-so-secret histories of three iconic songs, you can spend the holidays telling your family about the history of the greatest “Christmas” songs.

For many, it's time to check out your favorite Christmas show

by A.J. Denney

Christmas television cartoons--they’re almost as much a staple for the holidays as presents. From Rudolph and Frosty to Charlie Brown, everyone has a favorite one, and we’re going to be talking with some people who are they’re not afraid to tell us some of their favorites.

“My favorite Christmas special has got to be Rudolph,” stated Avery Kersey, 7th grader. “The main place that I watch the special is at my grandma’s house, and I like the Rudolph special because it shows Rudolph’s desire to be the best reindeer.”

“One of my favorite holiday specials is How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” explained Trevor Schnitker, 8th grader. “I like the story because at the beginning the grinch is mean and cold and hateful, but near the end he learns the true meaning of Christmas.”

“One of my favorite holiday specials of all time is Santa Claus is Coming to Town!” exclaimed Mrs. Nobbe, 7th and 8th grade student resource educator. “The reason I like the movie is because it’s a classic during Christmas time.”

“My personal favorite Christmas special is Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” disclosed Daxton Hendrick, 8th grader. “The reason it’s my favorite holiday special is because it’s a nice movie to watch over the holidays.”

“I personally like the Rudolph Christmas special,” proclaimed Jessica Byrd, 8th grader. “It’s my favorite because I remember watching it with my parents when I was little.”

“My favorite holiday special is Frosty the Snowman 2,” declared Hope Hamilton, 8th grader, “The reason is because it’s a classic, and where I watch it is at home sitting on my couch with my pets.”

Overall, it doesn’t matter what you like to watch during the holiday season. The thing that matters most is that you watch your favorite Christmas show with family or friends this year. Happy holidays!

Students and faculty share what they are grateful for this holiday season.

Students and staff are grateful at Thanksgiving

by Desirae Callahan

Thanksgiving--it’s an annual national holiday marked by religious observances and a traditional meal, including turkey. Thanksgiving is also spending time with your cousins, aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas, mom, dad, and siblings.

The holiday commemorates a harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621 and is held on November 22.

Avery McDaniel declared, “I think Thanksgiving is great because of the turkey, and it is a time to be grateful.”

Paige Ashcraft claimed, “I love seeing my family and the food. My favorite food for Thanksgiving is mashed potatoes because my grandma makes good mashed potatoes!”

Cami Barker stated, “ I think it’s a great holiday because you get to get together with all of your family and get to eat dinner with them, play games, and give thanks.

Mrs. Fultz commented, “I am going to be cooking for Thanksgiving because part of my family is coming over. My favorite food that I like to cook and to eat is pumpkin pie.”

Mrs Robinson continued, “My favorite part about Thanksgiving is being with my family and the food, my favorite food is turkey. “

Mrs Bradley exclaimed, “I am going to be staying home and cooking, I like to cook frog legs, but my favorite food to eat is the turkey! “

Aaron Peters claimed, “ My favorite food for Thanksgiving is steak because I like the meat, and it is really chewy!”

We hope you have a great time with your family and friends for Thanksgiving!

No matter what the tradition, our students enjoy Thanksgiving

by Savannah Williams

Thanksgiving--it’s an annual national holiday marked by religious observances and a traditional turkey dinner. For most, Thanksgiving also means spending time with one's cousins, aunts, uncles, grandma, grandpas, mom, dad, and siblings.

Thanksgiving is the time to give thanks, and many people give thanks in a variety of different ways.

For example, people in South Korea call Thanksgiving “Chuseok”.

Our Thanksgiving holiday commemorates a harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621 and is held on November 22.

FCMS students express their favorite Thanksgiving traditions.

Mrs. Nobbe explained, “We get together as a family and eat a lot of turkey, but I don’t like pumpkin pie. I eat the cool whip instead.”

Owen Darwish 7th grader exclaimed, “I eat dinner with my family, and sometimes I go hunting as well.”

McKenzie Rogers, 8th grader, explained, “This year I'm going to Florida and Disney World, but I usually have three Thanksgivings--one with my Dad, Mom, and step grandparents.” She also explained, “My favorite foods I eat are the jello, coleslaw, and cornbread.”

People sometimes don't celebrate Thanksgiving. Maybe they just go out to dinner or hang out with friends.

For example, Daxton Hendrick 8th grade, remarked, “I usually just eat turkey with my family and go to sleep because all that turkey makes me tired.”

Thanksgiving is a day of giving thanks to many different people in one’s family and for being thankful to have them in one's life. Whatever is your tradition, enjoy Thanksgiving!

Let's Talk: the art of storytelling

by Aaron Peters

Stories have been part of human culture since the dawn of time, and people today tell stories in the form of comics, movies, video games, etc.

Stories have this effect on us, depending on the subject, love, action, life, history, and sci-fi, which give us either hope, fear, determination, inspiration, or joy--a story can be anything.

However, how does one truly start a story to make it memorable?

That is the question that will drive this entry of ¨Let's Talk¨.

There are many ways to initially start a story, but one of the key elements is atmosphere. Picture this: you're sitting at a campfire with your friends. It's late in the night, and you hear nothing else but the crackle of the fire in front of you. This is a classic environment to tell a story, specifically a horror story.

Why? It’s the dead of night, and there's no one else around for possibly miles. Anything could come at you at anytime.

Another key element is genre. the category of the story sets up the whole background, so if it's sci-ifi make it so the story is on a spaceship or an advance technological future, or if it's a romance story, put it in a normal, everyday setting so that your story´s environment is more relatable and understandable.

One final element--possibly the most important in a story--is characters.

Write people into the story whom readers will grow attached to and root for. There are also side characters who can further progress the story and help out the protagonist (main character) in their journey, such as Luke Skywalker from Star Wars. An antagonist (the character who causes the conflict) is also an important character. In fact, the antagonist may be the whole reason the main character is on a quest in the first place, an example would be Bowser from Nintendo who kidnaps a princes.

Stories are powerful and can sometimes influence someone's perspective on the world or even their own life. Most stories are biography, fiction, fantasy, etc, but one thing that most authors want is for the story he or she wrote to be loved and inspire others. That is the magic of a story: to be heard, to be loved, and inspire others.

Thank you all for reading this entry of Let's Talk. This was a more personal entry, and I'm glad I could share it with you. Have a great day and happy Thanksgiving :)

The age-old question: how early is too early to decorate?

by Logan Reese

Having personally just put up Christmas decorations, it’s time to ask, how early is too early to decorate? There is a pretty even split in faculty and students' opinions

Mrs. Brown, science teacher at FCMS, says, “I believe it is never too early for Christmas. It's an individual decision. Some need the holiday cheer, while others want to celebrate the birth of Jesus as early as possible. I respect all decisions.”

Michael Hoskins, exclaimed, “Anytime before Thanksgiving it's like saying, “It's not an important holiday,” even though it is very important.”

Mrs. Yager, 8th grade math teacher, remarked, “Anytime before Thanksgiving.”

And Mrs. Wade, librarian and journalism teacher, claimed, “I normally don't decorate until after Thanksgiving; however, I may decorate a few days before this year. I am one of those people who think Thanksgiving deserves its own day, without Christmas impinging. Nevertheless, since I have a lot of stuff to do this year, I might get it done early just this once.”

8th Grade student, Jake Bulmer, stated, “To me you could have Christmas right after Thanksgiving. Too early for Christmas decorations would be right after Halloween.” Fellow 8th grader Robby Simon, declared, “Any time before Thanksgiving is too early.”

Mrs. Noah, 7th and 8th grade English teacher, remarked, “There isn't such a thing as too early for Christmas decorations! I've had my tree up for two weeks! ”

Some people are ready for St. Nicholas right away and have their stocking hung and tree up the day after Halloween, and some are not. But is their a reason for this? Some experts say it is simply nostalgia. You know that feeling you get when you see your friend you haven't seen since kindergarten or maybe a old familiar smell?

Steve McKeown, psychoanalyst, states this on the subject: “There could be a number of symptomatic reasons why someone would want to obsessively put up decorations early, most commonly for nostalgic reasons either to relive the magic or to compensate for past neglect. In a world full of stress and anxiety, people like to associate with the things that make them happy, and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood. Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement!”

So to put it simply, those who decorate early are more in touch with their inner child. So Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight!

Black Friday--to go or not to go?

by AJ Denney

Black Friday--it’s a tradition for most on the day after Thanksgiving, but that leaves us with a question: why? Why do people leave the comfort of their homes in search of a bargain? We’ll be talking to a few people to find out why they fight the crowd and brave Black Friday shopping.

“The reason I go Black Friday shopping is that it’s a tradition,” explained Mrs. Nobbe, student resource teacher. “Most of the time I go shopping with my mom, my sister, and my daughters, then we shop at JCPenney, the Kenwood Mall, Target, Bass Pro shop, and Dicks Sporting Goods.”

“I don’t get to go Black Friday shopping,” recalled Daxton Hendricks, 8th grader. ”The reason I never get to go is because my mom leaves me home every time I ask to go.”

“I’ve never received the chance to go Black Friday shopping,” responded Mckenzie Rodgers, 8th grader. “This is because I didn’t have the time to go.”

”The reason I go Black Friday shopping is to get some cheap clothes,” stated Cynthia Willoughby, 7th grader, “Most of the time I go with my four brothers, my mom and my dad, and the stores we shop at are Walmart and Bass Pro Shop.”

“The main reason I started going Black Friday shopping is to get gifts for Christmas!” exclaimed Ava Hedge, 7th grader. ‘I like to go with my mom and dad when I go black friday shopping. Then the store I visit the most on Black Friday is Walmart, ” she added.

“The purpose of why I go Black Friday shopping is to get good deals on stuff I like,” expressed Owen Darwish, 7th grader. “The people I go with vary from my mom, my dad, my brother, and finally my grandma, and the places I visit range from Walmart, Bass Pro Shop, Cabela's, to GameStop.”

“The answer behind why I go Black Friday Shopping is because everything is cheap,” concluded Sam Billman, a 7th grader. “I usually visit Rural King and Bass Pro Shop and my dad, my grandma, my grandpa, and my cousins usually come with me.”

Although there are several reasons to go Black Friday Shopping, from it being a tradition, to getting good deals, everybody has his/her own reasons to go, but if you don’t go, that’s okay because you get to spend time with your family this holiday weekend. Enjoy that turkey, with or without the Christmas lights!

Playlist review: Mono by RM

by Shelby Beneker

Inspiring--that could be possibly be the only word to describe RM’s playlist: Mono.

On October 22, RM (aka Kim Namjoon of BTS) gave a hint about his playlist release date over Twitter. The date that was set was the very next day. Many people called it a mixtape or an album, but he insisted they call it a playlist because it didn’t have an interlude or outro.

The biggest surprise was that he also announced that there was going to be a surprise collaboration on the 24th. “Waste it on Me” was produced by BTS and Steve Aoki, which subsequently made it to 1 billion streams on Apple music.

The word “mono” can mean alone or one, but when “mono” is stuck with another meaning, it starts to have an intrinsic meaning. RM wanted his playlist to be the opposite of the stereotype so that he could affect people worldwide. By doing this, RM helped people overcome anxiety over the years. (He released a mixtape in 2015 and various albums before and after.) I believe RM is doing amazing things with his popularity and not abusing it, like some other artists do.

Mono was made because of the stress and anxiety RM has had to overcome. At the same time, he wanted something for everyone to reflect upon. In the past few weeks, he has received tons of positive feedback from people all around the world. RM stated that he felt like he was connecting with the world and making his mark.

One of his songs from Mono, “Forever Rain”, talked about how the members of BTS helped him become who he is today. On another note, RM’s song 지나가, “It All Passes” explains that bad things will never last a lifetime, and life should be filled with fun and happiness.

A few months back, BTS promised a collaboration with Shawn Mendes. Knowing how passionate both fan bases are, the collaboration is sure to make it to #1.

Thanksgiving offers reasons to take time to be Thankful

by Kyle Grundy

How does your family celebrate thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 22. Many people celebrate it by spending time with family, eating food, or watching football.

The first Thanksgiving was in 1621, celebrating the survival of the colonist who settled in Plymouth. Thanksgiving wasn't founded as a national holiday until 1863, by president Abraham Lincoln. The president claimed it as an official holiday after an Union Army victory at Gettysburg.

During Thanksgiving, many people will share what they're thankful for. Some of the most common answers are friends, family, and good health.

Eighth grader Aaron Peters admitted, ¨I´m thankful for my family.¨

¨I´m thankful for good health and friends¨ Explained 8th grader Zach Hensley

Seventh grader Trevor Grundy stated, ¨I'm thankful for friends and food.¨

What are you thankful for? Whatever it is, take time to think about it this Thanksgiving.

Student opinion: Thanksgiving's top ten annoyances

by Aaron Peters

Sure, Thanksgiving is one of the most historical holidays on the U.S. calendar, but no matter how special it is, there are plenty of things some students don't like about it,

These are the Top 10 things I dislike about Thanksgiving:

10. Pumpkin everything

No matter where you go, the absolute minute it turns November 1st, people make pumpkin everything--from pumpkin cake to pumpkin cheesecake. CHEESECAKE-- we as humans have always been creative, but sometimes people get TOO creative when it comes to pumpkin creations.

9. Long parades

If you haven't been to one, you have at least seen them on the news: those long, drawn out and sometimes weird parades. Don't get the weird part? Well, picture this: remember the Mister Potato Head toy? The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade includes a Mister Potato Head balloon, only for us to go home and eat mashed potatoes. It's a bit barbaric.

8. Football

¨Wait, what's wrong with football?¨ you may ask yourself. Football is fun to watch at home with food, pop, and friends, but when it comes to football on Thanksgiving, it hurts to call it fun, to me, with all of the family there and considering vegetables and fruit are all they have. Do you really want to look like a hyperactive dog when the team scores in front of your entire family?

7. The kids’ table

This cannot be emphasized enough. If you have a degree from Ball State University, are respected in the line of work and yet are forced to sit at the kids table because every other chair is already filled, how is that fair?

6. Bland food

From green beans to whatever that is in that casserole, being stuck in a house with mild and country food, with only water (and sometimes pop) to wash it down, that is like an A-grade torture to the intestines, not to mention the possibility of having a diarrhea attack well after.

5. Family whom you have never met before

Thought the food was bad enough? Wait until you see the rest of the family, like that cousin you never knew you had, who brought along her pet mouse, Tina. Then you have those talks with your extended family that makes the whole day just a bit more awkward.

4. Traffic

Turns out one of the holidays that is supposed to represent peace also causes an all out road war for anyone who drives on the road, a car, truck, bike. It doesn't matter--as long as you're on the road on a vehicle, you're stuck here too just stopping and going in a crowd of cars for what feels like eternity.

3. Color

Thanksgiving´s national colors are brown and orange, sometimes red for the turkey feathers that little kids draw, but mostly brown. You get the point. Ohh wait you don't? One word: bland. It’s difficult to eat while thinking about these beige-like colors.

2. Getting a turkey

¨Phh, that ain't so bad¨ you might say. Well what if you had a family who likes to hunt for turkey inset of just buying one? Imagine this: It's cold, you have to wear baggy clothing and have to sit out in the woods for two hours, or you have that one aunt who brings in a live turkey for the pen outside, gets loose, and are forced to get it back. All the while, try not to get pecked to death by the turkey's beak.

1. Black Friday

Nevermind the traffic--the real party is in your local Walmart during Black Friday, if you were to try to navigate through an angry mob of nearly 100 people, just to get the best deals (any deals for that matter) for Christmas. It also stinks when three days later you go grocery shopping and your ´once-stocked-to-the-brim´ Walmart now looks like a barren wasteland, with nothing even for the vultures.

Sure, Thanksgiving is a time honored American tradition, but there are just some things that can't go without being said. Yet despite all of those innocent annoyances, it can still turn into a great day. Have an awesome Thanksgiving!

Dent Schoolhouse provides frightful fun well past Halloween

by Brooklynn Mays

Looking for a good scare? The Dent Schoolhouse is the place to go, even after Halloween.

The Dent Schoolhouse, located in nearby Cincinnati, is rated top 13 for scariest haunted houses in America; however, The Dent Schoolhouse is based on a true story!

The story is that in 1894 the Dent Public School was open teaching kindergarten through 12th grade. The school was successful, but in 1942, several students mysteriously vanished, last seen at the Dent School.

They were later known as runaways, but in 1945, four more students went missing in October. Rumor started to spread that the so called “runaways” had something to do with the school and, in 1952, three more students went missing, as school attenders started to complain about a strange smell coming from the basement.

Eventually, trespassers went into the school and were stunned by the sight from the janitor’s basement! The basement was covered with decaying remains of the missing students, and now the old school house is said to be haunted with the roaming spirits of the missing children.

When you arrive at the schoolhouse, you wait in line. Don't get to scared by the roaming scarers: they cant touch you. When you finally reach the front, you go through a little haunted trail with scary figurines to take pictures with, but then you reach the front doors to the schoolhouse.

As you enter there are strobe lights everywhere, and you start heading down the steps to the janitors’ basement…where there are many scarers and frightening setups. The jump scares are the worst! When you get out of the basement, you walk into an outside setup with squealing pigs, murderers, and everything like that. When you finally reach the end, you’re chased out by someone with a chainsaw!

If you go to the Dent Schoolhouse, good luck! Don't get too scared! Remember: it’s all “fake”.

The Dent Schoolhouse is open from 7:30-10 p.m. on Thursdays and Sundays, with admission being $22 and Fridays, as well as Saturdays from 7:30 p.m-12 a.m., with admission being $25. It’s located at 5963 Harrison ave, Cincinnati Ohio.

With the average tour being about 60 minutes long, I’d jump right in line for the schoolhouse!

Stretch yourself: tips for beginning new languages

by Shelby Beneker

안녕! 你好! Hola!

These are ways to say “hello” in Korean, Chinese, and Spanish.

If you are a person who wants to explore the world and learn about it, learning another language is for you. But, you had better be prepared: it takes a lot of effort and time.

Tip #1:

Pick a language you feel would fit you. Don't learn a language you don't want to. It won’t be as fun to learn and understand a foreign language that your classmates can’t. If you plan to travel to a certain place, learn the language now, and keep advancing so you’re ready when the time comes.

Tip #2:

When beginning each lesson, set a goal on what you want to understand. If you can’t seem to nail down the alphabet, learn it in moderation. Then, when you’re finished, put it all together. Example: learning at least five verbs.

Tip #3:

The one thing that might help you greatly is a journal. If you lose your study book, or if you don't have wifi, notes over the subject help greatly. You don't want to fall out of practice if your life becomes too busy.

Tip #4:

Spend time practicing your pronunciation. It helps with your reading/spelling. If you spent just a little time fixing the way you pronounce a certain letter/ character, things will be easier with writing.

To do this you can use many sites, but the best one is Duolingo.

Tip #5:

If you don't want to spend too much money on a book for another language, you could just do lessons at school (if they happen to teach the language you are interested in) or online. The site I recommend is Duolingo. It allows you to learn and communicate with others learning also.

Tip #6:

Don't stress about it. It’s harder to learn when stressed. Besides, it’s very enjoyable when you understand something you never thought you would. If you want to have fun for a change, try to teach someone the alphabet of a language they aren’t familiar with.

Tip #7:

If you have too much on your plate right now, and you can’t study, it’s all right. Around 10% of Americans actually go around the world to make a career around another language. However, if you are one of the 10%, you will almost always find a way. One way that is used a lot is listening to music in the language you are learning.

Remember: learning another language might seem challenging, but a challenge might just be the thing you need. It might just be your dream to travel the world--or even just have a conversation in another language.

Let's Talk: Music

by Aaron Peters

Everyone loves music, and everyone has their favorite genre of music: country, rap, heavy metal-- even jazz.

However, few people ask the history of music though. How did it start? How did it evolve? That is the question that drives this entry of “Let's Talk”.

The earliest music was believed to be just singing, clapping, and beating one´s hands on different surfaces. Between 60,000 and 30,000 years ago, there was a ´cultural explosion´, in which people started painting on walls as a form of art, as well as giving the dead ceremonial burials.

However, years later, in Slovenia 1695, Ivan Turk discovered what we know as the oldest known musical instrument: the Divje Babe flute. The flute is made from the femur of a dead bear, which has been dated back to 60,000-43,000 years ago.

From there the advancement of music was slow but steady. During 4000 BC, Egyptians had invented harps and flutes. Over 500 years later, in 3500 BC, lyrics for songs and double-reeded clarinets had been developed.

In Denmark of 2500 BC, the early form of a trumpet was made and was very different from ours today. This version was small, grey, and had no valves, it solely required the user to change the position of his or her lips to change pitch.

One of the biggest improvements to music was the creation of the guitar in 1500 BCE by the Hittites, who established an empire in Asia Minor and Syria. The guitar used frets to change the pitch of a string. In fact, this step in musical history was the inspiration for the design of the violin and harpsichord.

It is said that Greece is the root of classical art. In 600 BCE a famous mathematician, Pythagoras considered music as a science and developed the octave scale, which is how we write music sheets today.

During the middle ages and after the fall of Rome, most of the music was commissioned by Catholic church. In 600 AD, Pope Gregory had the Schola Cantorum built, which was the first musical school in Europe.

Over 144 years later, a singing school opened up in the Monastery of Fuda, and in 850 AD, Catholic musicians made a very important break through when they created church ¨modes¨, which later evolved to what we know as major and minor scales.

We then transition to the Renaissance Era, in which the future of music is only improved song after song, as well as defined by the incredible work of the band that plays it.

Finally, we arrive at the 20th century where the term, modernism, first appeared. Modernism in short is the reinvention of older genres of music, which lead to innovations and new ways of organizing and producing older categories of music.

It is here were our timeline stops. At the present, modernism is still a large part of today's media as well as other people's lives, it is no doubt that modernism will continue to be part of our media and lives forever.

Thank you all for reading this entry of “Let's Talk” and have a great day :)

The band is very popular, with tracks from Love Yourself: Tear and Love Yourself: Her.

In addition, on Thursday October 25 they came out with a new song called “Waste it on Me”, and it already has 6.8 Million views.

The fan base called Army grows bigger and stronger and more comes for the band BTS.

I like BTS because they’re fun, and they have a really cool sense of humor. My favorite band member is Min Yoongi because all he does is sleep and sometimes gets active and jokes around with all the members.

I think you should buy this album because it can help you overcome stress and nervousness when you’re scared and you need to relax.

A couple songs I like are “Boy in Luv” because it was back in the beginning of the idol years, and it has a really good flow to it. Another song I like is “The Truth Untold”. It's a sad song but can get your hopes up and could make you feel feelings for a person you miss, as well as lift your spirits.

I would recommend you watch one of their “Bon Voyage” videos or an app called V-Live if you want a good laugh or you just have spare time to relax.

There are a lot of BTS videos you can watch, and there are a bunch of memes about them that will also make you laugh.

Another series you can watch is BTS Bomb.

I think everyone should buy this album because it's helped a lot of people overcome stress. I hope you enjoy it!

Over fall break, Molly Littleton was asked to go with her aunt and uncle's family to Walt Disney World.

Fall travel review: Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida

by Molly LIttleton

Students may have noticed I was absent for a couple of days. I was absent those days because my family and I were in Orlando, Florida! We stayed at the Summer Bay Resort, and it was pretty fancy. There were a few lakes and some pools! I even got the opportunity to fly out there, which was really exciting!

I honestly wasn’t that nervous. Even though it was my first time flying, I was more excited than nervous. It was actually kind of aggravating because we had to wake up at 4:00 a.m., just to get there and wait in a line for security. Fortunately, I grabbed a window seat and snapped some pretty cool pictures of the sky!

The first day we arrived was kind of just a get settled in day, so we went to the store and grabbed some food and I’ve found that the hot chips “Takis” are even hotter in Florida! After the store, we went and played putt putt, at which I’m not very good. It was fun even though it was very hot!

Finally the exciting part! My cousins came down, and we went to Walt Disney world! It was way cool. On the first day we went to Magic Kingdom, and The first ride we went on was Space Mountain. It was really fun. Riders couldn’t see anything, so they would get surprised a lot. Space Mountain was fast and it felt like you were in a spaceship.

We rode a couple more rides, such as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, It’s a Small World, and Haunted Mansion. My favorite in Magic Kingdom is definitely Space Mountain.

The next day we went to Animal Kingdom, which is by far my favorite park there. All of the rides were very creative and fun to even be in line for!

My favorite ride there, although, is Avatar Flight of Passage. Riders sit on this bike-like object that doesn’t move, and there’s a huge screen in front of them. They wear 3D glasses, and it makes them feel as they’re really there riding a dragon! It was so cool. I could feel the wind and splashes of water, and it even had a big drop that felt very real. The scenery was beautiful, so my smile didn’t leave my face

The final day we went to Epcot. Epcot has rides but is more focused with the idea of the world and countries. When we first arrived there, we rode Spaceship Earth, which told us about the history of how people first started learning about writing. It was a really cool experience. After that we walked around the countries! They mainly were just based around the food for the country we were in.

After that, we took a boat over to Hollywood Studios. I really liked the vibe that this park gave off, which was vintage and city-like. The first ride we rode there was The Twilight Zone, Tower of Terror. It was almost like the Drop Tower in Kings Island, except this one went up and down a few times before it stopped and has a haunted house theme. I really liked the theme for this one too. Before it took the riders to get in, it had an message, just explaining that people have gone ‘missing’ on the elevator, which was pretty cool!

The last ride we rode was the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, starring Aerosmith! Long title, right? There was a long line as well, but once we got there, It took off! It was the fastest ride we rode there. There were loops and turns, and this coaster was pretty dark, so it was unexpected, which I think makes it a lot more fun!

After that, It was time to go home. I was pretty tired after three days of walking around Disney, but it was worth it! I had a lot of fun, and I’m very thankful that I had the opportunity to go! I hope you all get the chance to go. You won’t regret it!

Avery Kersey, 7th grader, loves Skyline for a change in pace for fast food.

Landen Wuestefeld, 8th grader, delights in the taste of Wendy's milkshakes.

Fast food equals fun food for many Wildcats

by Kyle Grundy

What's your favorite fast food restaurant? On November 16, it´s National Fast Food Day. National Fast Food Day is an unofficial holiday, but millions of people all over the world will stop in to their favorite restaurant and order their favorite fast food meal.

The unofficial holiday was born in the 1950s, after cars became affordable. The first ever fast food restaurant was White Castle. White Castle began selling burgers for just 5 cents.

Today the United States has a range of 50,000 fast food restaurants. Three of the most popular fast food restaurants are Subway, McDonald’s, and Burger King. Mcdonald's is the largest fast food chain in the United States.

Robby Simon, 8th grader, stated, “My favorite fast food restaurant has to be Frisch's because of the breakfast buffet.”

Seventh grader Lance Fields explained, “The best fast food restaurant has to be burger king because their cheeseburgers are delicious.”

Seventh grader Eli Butt admitted, “My favorite restaurant has to be Wendys because of the cheeseburgers and their curly fries.”

Seventh grader Aiden Johnson stated,”The best restaurant has to be McDonald’s because the fries are so good, and it's a tradition to eat there with family.”

Eighth grader Tj Pursifull remarked, “McDonald’s has to be my favorite restaurant because their fries are delicious.”

“My favorite restaurant is Wendy's because they have the best milkshakes ever!” exclaimed 8th grader Landen Wuestefeld.

Seventh grader Avery Kersey admitted, “Skyline has to be the best restaurant because they have coney dogs.”

Haunted cave provides a frightful good time at Halloween

by Desirae Callahan

Have you ever been through a haunted house--or even better--a haunted cave? The Lewisburg Haunted Cave is open Friday and Saturday, from 7 p.m. to 12 p.m.

Before you go through this cave, if I were you I would dress warmly because it does get warm down there, and also getting scared? You’d be very hot!

Are you wondering how it is to go through it?

When you go through it, you know it is a real cave, so first to get through it, you have to go down a couple feet. The line for the haunted cave goes downward; as a result, whenever you reach the bottom, the fun has begun.

Caves also have water, but the only way to get across the water is either by swimming or walking across a bridge. You do walk across a bridge; however, you do have people that go in the water and try and scare you by touching your feet. Just like other haunted houses or caves, there are things hanging up, and people who scare you. They also have things that close in on you.

At some points in the cave you will walk through just a pitch black maze, so you have to try and get through the maze, all while walking in the dark. And there is only one way out!

This cave is not like any other cave. There is actually a small little show in it. It is this big guy, who is dressed up. He gives you a little show and talks about going through one of the doors, and then you have to hurry and go through one of the doors, which is another maze. You have to go through the right door. If you don’t hurry and pick a door, then a guy with a chainsaw (in which he has the blade off) comes and gets your legs!

In this cave, like I have been saying, there are three mazes. Once the lights go out, they alternate coming back on and off.

At the last one, you have to walk, through doors to find your way out.

On some parts of the cave, when you walk, you’ll discover platforms, so it’s kind of hard to stand.

But remember: there are people behind you, so you do have to hurry!

The Lewisburg Haunted Cave is located on 4392 Swishers Mill Road, in Lewisburg, Ohio.

I hope I have given you some inspiration to go to the Lewisburg Cave. Have a scareific time!

Students took advantage of the opportunity to dress up on October 31st, since Halloween fell in the middle of the school week. Happy Halloween!

Let's discover the origins of Halloween

by Jay Schallick

Do you enjoy dressing up as a ghost or ghoul and begging for candy? As dumb as it sounds, a lot of people enjoy it. There’s a night for this every year.

On October 31, people dress up and go trick or treating. This night is called Hallows’ Eve, better known as Halloween. This may be a fun night, but have you wondered why we celebrate it?

In the Middle Ages, people believed October 31 was when the spirits came back to haunt the living. To please them, people left food and candy in front of their homes to please the dead.

On this night, children and poor adults began to dress up as the undead and knock on peoples’ doors. After this, they would then ask for food or candy and promise not to “haunt” those people.

As more people became aware of this, people of all ages began to do this, and it became a tradition for most.

Some believe Halloween is a Satanic holiday because of the way it is celebrated. Some people also believe it is a Satanic holiday, due to the haunted houses and how it’s customary to scare people.

But contrast, many people today think Halloween is just plain fun. You could go trick or treating, hand out candy, or go to a haunted house or maze. If you celebrate, hope you enjoy!

It's pumpkin carving time!

by Brooklynn Mays

Do you enjoy carving pumpkins? If so, what's your favorite part? Do you like adding terrifying or pretty faces on your pumpkins? Well, this October 31st may just be your day. Be ready to cut, clean, and carve this Halloween!

Most can agree carving pumpkins is the most fun around Halloween when people are in the Halloween mood. “I love carving pumpkins, but it’s way more exciting around a week before Halloween when everyone's in the spooky spirit!

Also, you know your pumpkin will last until Halloween night if you don't carve too early or late!” exclaimed Hannah Mullins.

Adam Mace contrasted, “I don’t like carving pumpkins the only cool thing is making a design, preferably something scary or cool like a bat.”

Most people like making their pumpkins as scary as possible, such as Noah. “I don't carve pumpkins every Halloween, but when I do, I make it the scariest pumpkin out there,” explained Noah Smith.

Other people, such as, Chloe like making their pumpkins cute or sweet. “When I carve pumpkins I make them as cute as possible, I also like using utensils. It makes the cute design a lot easier to carve,” gushed Chloe Branstetter.

By contrast, Alexis Davidson stated, “I like to make my pumpkins funny.”

Some find the aftermath of carving pumpkins a lot more fun, such as Cadin. “I don't enjoy carving pumpkins as much as I like smashing them,” stated Cadin Bowman.

When asked what he enjoyed most about pumpkin carving, Timber Guck stated, “I like to paint my pumpkins. It's a lot easier then going through all of the carving steps, and you still get the same outcome.”

All of these are great ways to carve pumpkins, so good luck. We can't wait to see all the funny, cute, scary, or even smashed pumpkins this Halloween!

Nick Shaw is going to recuperate from getting his molar teeth removed.

Joseph Gillman plans to eat, sleep, and play Fortnite over fall vacation.

Wildcats dream of fall break plans

by Travis Schwartz

One week in the month of October, the FCMS students get out for a whole week to relax and do whatever they want.

There really is no specific activity that students have to do on fall break. You do whatever you want to do, whether if it is traveling or staying home and relaxing.

For example, Mrs. Reuss, assistant principal, stated, “I am going to stay home, relax, and read on fall break.”

Someone who is going to be traveling this fall break is 8th grader Dawson Hertel. Dawson announced, “I am going to go to Gatlinburg for my fall break.”

Eighth grader Joseph Gillman is going to be busy on this week of fall break. Joseph acknowledged, “I am going to go to the flea market, go to Ohio, play Fortnite, and sleep.”

Eighth grader Braden Eggleston is going to have loads of fun on his vacation. Braden explained, “I am going to a corn maze with my family.”

Fall break is not always about fun and games. Some of us have to work or go to the doctors or maybe even have surgery.

For instance, 8th grader Nicholas Shaw announced, “On fall break I have to go get surgery on my teeth. They are going to remove the molars in my mouth.”

Whether if it is traveling, getting surgery, or working maybe, make sure to have a lot of fun and enjoy the week off.

The timeless question: how old is too old to trick or treat?

by Michael Hoskins

The smell of the crisp air, the autumn leaves on the ground, and the candy in your Halloween bucket--it’s trick or treat time! Or do you ever reach an age in which you don’t go trick or treating on Halloween? Or do you stay a kid in a costume forever?

Halloween spells the time of trick or treat for many students. Maybe for you but not for Noah Smith because, as he claimed, “I think the age 13 is too old to trick or treat because it’s embarrassing having to dress up in ridiculous costumes.”

“What, you say you’re too old to trick or treat? That's ridiculous!” These are thoughts of many people.

“I think you never reach an age to not go trick or treating. I mean I see parents dress up with their kids and have as much fun as they do,” Stephen Back protested.

Audrey Sacksteder believes Mr. Back is right. “I think you never reach an age to not go trick or treating, and adults can have just as fun with the kids,” Audrey Sacksteder claimed.

You see all kinds of adults dressing up for Halloween, but are they having fun? That is the question.

Michael Withrow declared, ”I think the age 18 is too old to go knocking on people’s doors, and if you’re older than 18, you just shouldn’t go.”

Rulan Hennekes agreed, ”I think there's no age limit to go trick or treating because you can always get free candy.”

”I think there's no age limit to go trick or treating because there's a lot of adults that dress up, and if you have kids, you have to take them trick or treating,” Camden Rose stated.

Lendon sizemore announced, ”I think there's no age limit to go trick or treating because who wouldn’t want to go up to a random stranger’s house and get all kinds of free candy.”

Trick or treaters or non trick or treaters, have a happy Halloween this year and have some fun. Maybe even scare someone, or just be the supplier of candy. Better yet, be the trick or treater who gets tons of candy if you go this year.

Millennials form a new generation of flavored coffee drinkers

by Desirae Callahan

Did you know that Starbucks has been around for 47 years? It has been open since 1971! Starbucks has a lot of coffee flavors and different kinds of drinks. Do you have a favorite drink at Starbucks or other coffee shops? Some of the students ar FCMS do!

Avery McDaniel, exclaimed, “My favorite drink at Starbucks is the pink drink because it tastes good, and the pink drink also does not have as much coffee in it as well. I just don’t like coffee!”

The pink drink is also a favorite to Audrey Sacksteder.

The pink drink is a lot of students’ favorites; nevertheless, Cami Barker stated, “My favorite Starbucks drink is the Strawberry Acai Refresher because I’m not a big fan of coffee, so I love getting more of the fruity drinks, and the Strawberry Acai Refresher, to me, is way better than all the other coffee drinks you can get!”

Katie Mauntel declared, “I don’t go to Starbucks but one of my favorite coffee drinks is the caramel iced coffee with extra cream and sugar because it’s sweet and it gives me energy.”

One of Josie Rolfes’ favorite starbucks drinks is the iced caramel macchiato with coconut milk! Even though National Coffee Day was September 29, we will all enjoy drinking coffee more often when it’s all flavored up!

Students enjoy a lazy October day off

by Jay Schallick

As Thursday approached, students were thrilled to have a day off from school, due to parent/teacher conferences. Many were glad they could sleep in or wake up early to go hunting.

“I was glad that we had a day off because I was able to go hunting and ride my quad,” stated Joseph Boomer. He was thrilled he was able to do that during the week.

Similarly, Mr. Deters declared, “I’d go fishing or hunting too, if my wife would let me, but I had to go to school for conferences!” He was bummed he wasn’t able to go fishing.

Indifferently, Trever Schnitker declared, “I stayed inside and played Fortnite all day, while taking care of my younger siblings.” As we can see, he is the type to stay indoors, unlike Joseph Boomer or Mr. Deters.

By comparison, Clayton Bolser remarked, “I did nothing except play Blacklight Reputation and eat.” He is also the type to stay inside and play video games, just as Trever does.

Isaiah Lee declared, “I had over a friend, so we played basketball and Fortnite.”

Also one to get exercise, Trenton Lainhart remarked, “I went ice skating with my family.” That’s how he spent his day off.

Sophie Garrett stated, “I enjoy crafting, so that's what I did over my day off.”

We hope that you had had a fun day off last Thursday!

Let's Talk: Halloween horror known as Jack the Ripper

by Aaron Peters

Picture this: August, 31, 1888, in London, England. On a crisp night in the Whitechapel District, the air turns still, and a predator finds his prey.

With Halloween just around the corner, people will surely talk about their favorite Halloween characters/monsters, and one of those characters is a historical serial killer in the 18th century known as Jack the Ripper. Jack is not as widely recognized as Dracula, so here is the full story of Jack the Ripper.

¨What make him so different, so unique?¨you may ask yourself. He was never caught, and no one even knew what he looked like, so rumors say he wore a mask. However, everyone knew that this mysterious murderer was a man, a very dangerous man.

A woman was found murdered in the early morning of August 31, 1888, on a street called Bucks Bow. The woman was later identified as Mary Ann Nichols, also known as ¨Polly”. Mary become one of the five known murderers of Jack the Ripper.

His true infamy, however, becomes apparent when his own letters were published. His first is the ¨Dear Boss¨ letter, which was believed to be another hoax like all the others they had received; however, when Jack striked again, the victims earlobe was cut off, very reminiscent to a promise that was made in the letter.

This letter also is the reason he got the name Jack the Ripper. By signing with ¨Jack the Ripper¨ during his murders, the police and journalists all received mixed letters by concerned citizens for ways to possibly catch the criminal. People who saw these murders as a way to make the earliest prank known to man, which ¨evolved¨ into what we know today as prank calls.

Out of the 700 known letters, 300 of them were hoaxes, except for the ¨Dear Boss¨ letter, as well as the the ¨Saucy Jack¨ letter, which was shorter and not as well known.

After that and the last known murder victim, Marie Jeanette Kelly, Jack just stopped, disappeared, vanished, and the letters stopped coming in. There were no more murders, and no one knows why or how it was possible, but Jack the Ripper, by speculation and in desperate act of hope made by the police, was no more .

Whatever did happen to Jack, his actions were never forgotten. As the years passed, Jack has become a notorious horror figure (He's so infamous that his halloween costumes cost 50-60 dollars).

Thank you all for taking the time to read this Halloween article about this horrifying individual. Have a safe and happy Halloween :)

Joseph Gillman, 8th grader, stated, “I like all frappe’s and flavors from anywhere; I love coffee!”

Do you have a pet? Hanging out with your pet can reduce stress levels and increase concentration, This includes cats, dogs, and fish, just to name a few. Top 5 NFL Picks: Jay and Kyle battle it out

by Jay Schalick

Jay's picks

This year, 2018, is another fun year. Our world is full of people and sports. What’s one sport that a lot of people love? Football, of course!

This year is another football year in which teams will collide in a battle for that precious Super Bowl ring.

In the NFL, there are a lot of teams well known for winning. A lot of the teams are what is known as “power houses".

Here are the top 5 best teams in the NFL that I think are the best. These are the teams who I think have the best offense, defense, or team overall.

At number 5, we have the Tennessee Titans. In 2015, they were probably one of the worst teams in the NFL. After that year, general manager, Jon Robinson, deserves credit for turning the team into excellent ball players. This includes the quarterback Marcus Mariota, the running back Derrick Henry, and wide receiver Corey Davis.

With the help of him, they made it to the final round of the playoffs three years in a row.

The reason they are ranked number 5 for me is that they went from nothing to something, just like that.

At number 4, I put the San Diego Chargers. At quarterback, they have one of the oldest ever: Rivers. Last year in 2017, Rivers was the best quarterback for passing and is even better this year.

They also have some of the youngest wide receivers in the NFL, which is pretty impressive since they had the best passing game last year. This is why I put the Chargers at number 4.

At number 3, I have the Los Angeles Rams. Why I have them at number 3 is mainly because of a few people. Todd Gurley is the running back, and in my opinion, he is one of the best in the league. This is because of his speed, ability to truck, and juke very well.

At wide receiver, they have Tavon Austin, one of the fastest wide receivers in the NFL. They are one of the fastest teams and just a good team in general. This is why I put them at number 3.

At number 2, I chose the Jacksonville Jaguars. I chose them because they are ranked 2nd in the AFC South division. They have the 6th best offense, as well as the 2nd best defense. They have blue-chip talent on both sides of the ball.

On the defensive line, they have 300-pound lineman Calais Campbell.

On the offensive side, they have pro running back. Leonard Fournette. Fournette is a whopping 228 ball carrier. He is 6’1.”

At number 1, I chose the Pittsburgh Steelers. I may not like this team, but they are a very good team. They basically have a Pro Bowl-caliber player at every position on offense.

It's tough to find such a good trio on offense. Weighing 241 pounds at quarterback, they have Ben Roethlisberger. He is the hardest QB to tackle in the NFL.

At running back, weighing 225 pounds, they have Le’Veon Bell. He is a menacing running back. Bell is a very “explosive” player in the NFL.

Finally at wide receiver, weighing 186 pounds, they have Antonio Brown. He is considered the best wide receiver in the NFL. He is quick, strong, is capable of jumping high, and can catch like no other.

This is my pick of the best 5 teams right now in the NFL, due to statistics and players. Hope you enjoy finding out if I’m right nor not!

The other side of the coin toss: Kyle's Picks

by Kyle Grundy

Who's your favorite team in the NFL? Many people have different opinions on NFL teams. The top 5 teams to play in 2018 so far are the Eagles, Patriots, Vikings, Rams, and Jaguars.

Holding tight to the number 5 spot are the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars record for 2018 is 3-1. They recently played the New York Jets, whom they beat 31 to 12. The quarterback for the Jaguars is Blake Bortles. Blake has played in the NFL 4 years and is yet to have an injury, however, he has had a sprained AC joint after the 2016 season.

At the number 4 spot are the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams´ current record is 4-0. Their most recent game was playing the Minnesota Vikings, whom they beat 38 to 31. The quarterback for the Rams is Jared Goff. Jarred has played in the NFL for 3 years and is 23 years old.

Gripping the number 3 spot is the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings recent game was against the Los Angeles Rams, whom they unfortunately lost to with a score of 31- 38. The quarterback for the Vikings is Kirk Cousins. Kirk has played in the NFl for 7 years and is 30 years old.

Holding tight to the number 2 spot are the New England Patriots. The Patriots have a record of 5-3 for the 2018 year. They recently played Miami Dolphins, defeating them 31-7. The quarterback for the Patriots is Tom Brady. Tom Brady has been playing in the NFL for 18 years and is 39 years old.

Clutching the number 1 spot are the Philadelphia Eagles. The current record for 2018 is 2-2. They recently played the Tennessee Titans whom they unfortunately lost to by 3 in overtime. The quarterback is Nick Foles. Nick has played in the NFL for 5 years and is 29 years old.

We hope to see two of these teams playing in the Super Bowl in 2019!

Halloween Happiness--Top Ten Candy Cravings

by Jayden Heffron

Imagine yourself running down the sidewalk on Halloween night, trying to find a house that is still giving out candy. You find one house left, hoping the person will give you candy, not just any candy: your favorite candy. There are many varieties of candy, but you have to have a favorite piece of candy. I will be talking to you about ten pieces of Halloween candy, ranking from 1 - 10.

10. Twizzlers

I put Twizzlers at 10th because I don’t think they have enough flavor to them, but they’re a sweet treat after Halloween.

9. Tootsie Rolls

I think Tootsie Rolls are really good, but they can be very annoying when they get stuck in your teeth; however, I think the flavor of the rich chocolate is delicious.

8. Whoppers

I think Whoppers are okay. I don’t like the flavor that much. Art teacher, Mr. Doug Deters, disagreed, “I love Whoppers they’re probably my favorite candy ever,” he declared.

7. Nerds

I think Nerds deserve 7th because all the flavor that they own are really good, and some of the flavors are strawberry, lemon, and cherry. It's really hard not to spill them; moreover, they’re hard to clean up.

6. Milk Duds

I love Milk Duds. They’re my favorite candy. I love the caramel, but the flaw of this piece of candy is also the caramel. It tastes so good because the caramel and the chocolate mix together very well, but it’s annoying when it gets stuck in your teeth.

5. Hershey Bar

The reason I put the Hershey Bar at 5th is that the just plain milk chocolate needs more flavors with it. For example, it needs caramel, but overall the taste of the chocolate is really tasty.

4. Milky Way

I love Milky Ways. I think they deserve top 5 because the flavor of caramel is so good, but then again, the caramel is annoying when it gets stuck in your teeth.

3. Reese Cups

I'm not much of a fan of Reese Cups because there’s more peanut butter than chocolate, which means I’m not a fan of peanut butter. I ranked these so high up even though I don’t like them, but a lot of other people do love them.

2. Snickers

I think Snickers are okay, but I hate peanuts; nevertheless, caramel and the chocolate blended very well together are really tasty. Cody Browning exclaimed, “I love Snickers. I don’t know what I would do without them!”

1. Kit Kats

I love Kit Kats. I think Kit Kats deserve 1st because everyone loves them--it’s chocolate. Who doesn’t think chocolate is delicious?

Picture this again: you just arrive home from trick-or-treating, but you don’t realize what piece of candy you got from the last house, so you dump out all your candy, throwing one piece after another. The candy is going everywhere because you’re sorting your candy from good to bad. You notice one piece of candy left; however, is it your favorite piece of candy--or not. Those are my ten favorite pieces of candy. I hope you get all the pieces of candy that you want this Halloween.

Top 5 irritating video game fails

by A. J. Deney

Young and old, classic players to some new ones, there’ll always be something that irritates you in video games. So here we are counting them off: the top 5 most irritating parts of video games.

#5. GAME CRASHES

Everyone has had one of these moments, right? You’re about to boot up a game when, WHAM! Your game crashes, possibly erasing everything you’ve done and irritating you. A game that does that is none other than Halo Master Chief Collection.

However, simply playing another game or restarting your console or computer and lowering your ingame settings is enough to fix this issue, so that’s why it so low on this list.

#4. Lag

Ah, yes, it’s one of, if not the most controversial topic in gaming: LAG. Now, lag’s been around as long as video games, but there’s a simple fix to this controversial issue.

Minecraft is an example of a game that lags because it is processing thousands of pixels of data at any given moment. Make sure no other games are running in the background and to lower your in-game settings. That’s why it’s number 4 on this list.

#3. Intelligent game design

Sometimes video games can be smarter than humans. The game can cheat you by taking away things that you have earned. These things include your loot, levels, or lives, and sometimes the game gains knowledge if you died from it several times.

An example of a game that is intelligent is Forza Horizon. The cars on this game seem to advance and get tougher based on your skill level. This can be massively irritating; however, there’s a solution to this problem: just don’t do the same actions twice, so the game can’t learn to counteract them and be unpredictable.

#2.Glitches

Glitches are yet another controversial topic in gaming. Some of them can help you, such as an unlimited ammo glitch or unlimited turn glitch. Yet some can hinder you, such as your character going fully out of control and flying across the map. Although, how you fix this isn’t that easy because game developers have to go through thousands of lines of code to find the glitch and fix it, so sometimes the process could take years or days to solve.

A game that contains several glitches is Terraria. An example is a disappearing yoyo that is needed for attacks on enemies. This is purpose it’s number two on this list.

#1. Failure to accomplish your goal

Imagine you are about to beat a level, when suddenly you die. Irritating, right? Most would say yes, but the reason why it is number one is because you can die over and over and still not beat the level.

Fortunately, this problem can be easily solved by not giving up and involving lots of practice. An example that often took the author awhile was defeating the enemy in the game Cuphead. It took tons of practice and hard work. So that’s why this is number one on this list.

Obstacles in life are irritating. Video games are even more so to some people, but if you push through and have a positive mind set, you can achieve your goal. Thanks for defeating the Irritating Parts of a Video Game article. Hope you enjoyed reaching your gaming goal!

Let's Talk: The Origins of Candy

When you think of candy, what kind of candy comes to mind?

The sour explosion of Warheads or the flaring flavor of an AirHead? Or maybe it's the hard jawbreaker or the soft gum?

Whichever you choose, candy will always be useful for one thing: sweet snacks.

What does not come to mind when thinking about candy, however, is its purpose.

Why was candy invented?

To answer that we must know candy´s history--its origins.

While there is lack of proof, it is believed that cavemen first invented this sweet treat by drying honey and forming a taffy-like result; consequently, this newfound knowledge quickly became a staple in mankind.

If you think that's the end, you are wrong. Candy found a new purpose during 2000 BC, during ancient Egypt, in which candy was used at ceremonies and when worshiping gods and goddesses.

During the middle ages, however, sugar candies became extremely popular, only accessible to the wealthy and categorized as a drug, specifically a cure for ailments, which are minor illnesses.

Finally, rock candy was made during the 18th century, also called sugar cane. This was a product of a sugar plantation, where it was made by slaves during the sugar trade.

Candy has had many purposes over the years; however, most of the time it was a tasty treat made to satisfy one´s sweet tooth. Nevertheless, that doesn't change the fact that candy has been used for many other things, even a product of slavery. Thankfully the sugar trade has been shut down, and candy today is manufactured.

Thank you all for reading this entry of ¨Let's Talk¨ and have a great day. :)

BTS is taking the world by storm

by Shelby Beneker

In 2013, a man named Kim Namjoon had the courage to change the world through music. Now, the same person, who has six amazing best friends, just gave a speech at the UN about self-acceptance and is currently on tour with the group known as BTS. One of the best quotes at the UN by Namjoon was, “These faults and mistakes are what I am, making up the brightest stars in the constellation of my life.”

Believe me, it wasn’t easy. They had many hardships throughout the years, such as rejection, people calling them names, just being plain mean, and even death.

The group BTS is made up of seven members: Kim Namjoon, Kim Seokjin, Min Yoongi, Jung Hoseok, Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung, and Jeon Jungkook.

Kim Namjoon turned 24 on September 12th, and his stage is RM, which currently stands for “real me”. He is the creator and leader of the group. He is known for always breaking something or finding himself in a sticky situation more than most people.

Kim Seokjin is 25 and is the oldest in the group; some people call him Jin, but most call him the mother of BTS. He also runs a show called Eat Jin, which features Jin (and sometimes other members), traveling around the world and trying new foods.

Min Yoongi, 25, is slightly younger than Jin but is actually more mature and still a fun person. He is known as Suga on stage because he was shooting guard on his basketball team and wanted a name to show for it.

Jung Hoseok, the sunshine of the group, is 24. He is known for being a silly person, on stage and off. Many people call him Hobi, Jhope, or Dance Monster.

Park Jimin is 22 and is the most loving person one would ever meet. He always shares, even if he doesn’t even have enough of something for himself. Park is one of the hardest working people in the group.

Kim Taehyung is going to turn 23 on December 30th but still remains childish for the year. Some of his names are V, Tae-Tae, and The Alien. He is deemed the weird one of the group, but everyone loves him the same.

Jeon Jungkook, or “Jungoo”, is 21 and is seen as the baby of the group. He is actually pretty mature, but when it comes to games or something along that lines, he can be competitive and childish.

On June 12, 2013, they debuted with their very first song, “No more dream”. Now, they have 16 albums: 2 Cool 4 Skool, O!RUL8,2, Skool Luv Affair, Dark & Wild, Wake Up, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life (part one), The Most Beautiful Moment in Life (part 2), The Most Beautiful Moment in Life-Young Forever, Youth, Wings, The Best of Bodan Shonendan, Love Yourself Her, Best of BTS, Face Yourself, Love Yourself Tear, and Love Yourself Answer, along with 22 singles.

For the last four years they have been taking criticism very seriously, even changing the way they write their music; however, recently, they have been accepting themselves for who they are. Just last week, someone posted a hate comment on their Twitter but got blocked.

BTS has been excelling socially too; for instance, they collaborated with Nicki Minaj for their recent music video, “IDOL”. They have worked with other people, such as Wale, Steve Aoki, and sometime soon they are going to collaborate with Shawn Mendes.

They also have two shows that they are a big part of: BTS RUN and Bon Voyage. BTS RUN consists of the boys doing challenges and going on adventures. Similarly, Bon Voyage is currently on its third season, and they go various places in that series.

Their fan base is named ARMY. ARMY, stands for Adorable Representative for M.C Youth. BTS stands for Bulletproof Boy Scouts, so it's a very fitting name for both, don't you think? Did you know that even the people you don’t see can be an ARMY? Many don't see him, but he’s there, petitioning to be their bodyguard--it’s John Cena.

Who knows what they have planned next! A few days ago they made it clear that they wanted a Grammy next. With adoring ARMYs, it’s sure to happen.

Top of the Charts: The Top 5 Current Musical Acts

by Shelby Beneker

Everybody loves something. It can be reading, drawing, learning a second language, or even listening to all kinds of music.

The number one artist, on my survey, is Eminem, who has earned #1 on the Billboard 200 with his album, Kamikaze.

He has achieved ten #1 albums. His debut album in 1996 was called Infinite. Eminem has ten studio albums, five video albums, and eight compilation albums. Last week Eminem was #64 on the Top 100 Artists. He has been on the charts for 219 weeks and counting.

“I’ve been listening to him for about four years now, actually,” commented Michael Hoskins, grade 8.

The second amazing artist is BTS, who has been on many shows around the world. They have been to the BBMAS, RDMAS, AGT, and many, many more. They were number 1 on top artist (for Billboard) last week and have been high on the charts for exactly 100 weeks. BTS recently came out with a new album also, an addition to the Love Yourself series, Answer.

“I think BTS is amazing, especially one member, V, having a very hard time when he was bullied in school, so may we take a moment of silence for him,” declared Savannah Williams, grade 8.

The third artist of today is Drake. Last week he was number 2 because of his recent song, “In My Feelings”. He has also been on the charts for 219 weeks. One thing you should know is that BTS’s J-Hope was featured in the ending of Drake’s recent music video. His peak position on the chart was number 1.

The fourth artist is Post Malone, who has performed in many places and concert venues with the help of Republic Records. On October 7th, he is going to perform at the Memphis Music Festival, in Memphis, Tennessee.

Post Malone has 2 studio albums, 11 singles, 1 mixtape, and 6 music videos. He was number 5 last week on the charts, rising up a spot after 115 weeks. His peak position was number 1, and hopefully he makes it to number 1 again.

Imagine Dragons is the fifth and final band, which has many albums that inspire an abounding amount of people. Mrs. Wade, the 8th grade journalism teacher commented, “I like Imagine Dragons because their music is bold, fun, and positive.

The group consists of four members that have been in the band since 2008-2011: Dan Reynolds, Wayne Sermon, Ben McKee, and Daniel Platzman. They have 4 live albums, 10 EPs, 3 studio albums, and 21 singles. Last week they were number 7, and their peak position was number 1. They have been high on the charts for 187 weeks.

Even if your favorite artist didn’t make it, they are still the best in your eyes. Some artists are on tour around the world inspiring others and inspiring you to do the same.

Love it or hate it, fall is here to stay

by Logan Reese

Ahh, fall, the time of year for turkey and candy. What's not to love about it? It's the time of the year when the leaves turn orange and we celebrate Thanksgiving and Halloween--not to mention we get a week off school!

Thanksgiving is celebrated in the USA on Thursday, November 22nd, and Halloween is celebrated on Wednesday, October 31st. These holidays are for celebrating family and spooky traditions.

Halloween is based around an old legend in which people would light bonfires and wear costumes to scare ghosts away.

Thanksgiving is based on the pilgrims coming on their ship the Mayflower and landing at Plymouth and having their first feast in the new world.

Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year, and it's a lot of people’s favorites.

Eighth Grader Aaron Peters claimed he liked fall because of its beauty. “When the leaves change color, it makes the whole world look different, especially during the sunset, ” he declared.

7th and 8th grade English teacher Mrs. Noah stated, “I like fall because I get to use my woodburner.” She then claimed, “I also get to turn off my air conditioner!”

AJ Denney declared, “I like the change in the weather and in the color.”

Michael Hoskins explained, “I like the weather. It's not too cold or too hot. It's just right, especially for basketball! ”

Mrs. Wade, journalism teacher and librarian, exclaimed, ”I don't really like fall because it leads to winter, but the best part about it are Halloween and pumpkins.” She continued, “I also love pumpkin-flavored snacks!”

Mrs. Walter, 6th grade English teacher stated, ”I like the cooler temperatures and sitting by the fire. ”

Mrs. Yager remarked, “I love the new color of the leaves!”

Fall officially started on Saturday, September 22, and will end on Friday, December 21. The fall weather has already kicked in!

Show your love: October 10th is the next National Teddy Bear Day

by Jayden Heffron

Have you ever cuddled with your teddy bear in your room during a stormy night? If you haven't, September 9th was the perfect day to do that! You might be wondering why. September 9th was National Teddy Bear Day.

National Teddy Bear day was created by Theodore Roosevelt. He created this holiday for one reason: because his family gave him a nickname; they called him Teddy Bear. You might be wondering why he got this nickname; he got it when he was hunting, when he refused to shoot an angry grizzly bear.

Trevor Schniticker commented, ¨I think it's a weird day, but for younger kids, I think it's the perfect day for them.”

Others had different comments, such as Savannah Nelson. Savannah acknowledged, ¨I have never heard of National Teddy Bear Day, but now that I know I am going to have to prepare for it.¨

So for the next September 9th, I hope you’re cuddling with your teddy bear. Autumn Crouch mentioned,”It sounds like a pretty cool day. I love stuffed animals, especially teddy bears!”

October 10th, there is another holiday, known as National Bring Your Teddy Bear to School or Work Day. Brett Bischoff declared,”I’d definitely bring my teddy bear in for school.” This event happens on the second Wednesday of October. This holiday´s founder is unidentified; therefore, since there is no founder there is no reasoning why this holiday was created.

There were many positive quotes, but there were some negative. Avery Crouch had a positive quote. He stated, “This is a strange holiday, but it sounds fun.” Hopefully Avery is preparing for National Bring Your Teddy Bear to School or Work Day.

Jordan Reynolds agrees with Avery, but Jordan remarked,“ I have never heard of it, but it’s something I would attend.”

Just keep in mind that our next National Teddy Bear day is October 10th. Cuddle and snuggle with your favorite teddy bear!

Lets Talk: The History of Comics

by Aaron Peters

Comics--from incredible and inspiring heroes to hilarious and unforgettable comedians, comics have been praised by many and are still a massive part of today's media, but what was it like for comic industry's back then, before they are as popular as they are today? The answers to this question I will be explaining in this entry of ¨Let's Talk: The History of Comics”.

Before we delve into the rich history of comics, we must know what a comic is.

Comic: a strip or book containing drawn pictures with speech bubbles that depict a story.

Remember my ¨Let's Talk¨ movie entry and how I said that movies appeal to different people? Well, comics are the same way, except in a drawn out format.

Just like movies, comics can be about drama, comedy, horror, and--most commonly--action.

And like movies, they have had a very harsh past.

Beginning in in the 1920 to 1929, comics were part of newspapers, magazines, and supplements with the first notable comic of that period being The Funnies.

Comics back then were limited to just a few pages, unlike what they are today, in which they have a total of 32 pages.

Then, during the 1930s, a sudden shift happened that would go on to be known as the Golden Age of Comics. The cause of this change was the release of Famous Funnies: A Carnival of Comics, which was the first comic to be its own thing, its own book; as a result, this would be the first publication that today we know as a comic book.

Similarly, New Fun Comics (later becomes More Fun Comics) #1, published by National Allied Publications (later becomes DC), released more familiar material called Action Comics.

During 1938 and 1939, two of the most iconic comic heros would first appear. Their rivalry legendary, the World's Greatest Detective and the Man of Steel, Batman and Superman, they were the most memorable heros during that time (with the acception of Mickey Mouse).

During 1940, World War II happened, and while the war itself was catastrophic, there were some brighter sides; however, one stood out above them all during that time: a man who donned the colors of the American flag, a man whose shield was purely immune to bullets, a man who became one of Marvel's most extraordinary heros: that man's name is Captain America, and he was comics’ answer to the war, not by amazing powers and not by fame, but by giving the people hope and courage.

But the war ended in 1950; consequently, sales on comics dropped to an all time low, with only Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman still being published.

The 1960s was the time of growth for comics, the Silver Age, with the creation of one of the most well known superheroes to this day, made by Stan Lee himself: Spider Man.

By the 1970s, Marvel had dethroned DC comics and became the 70s King of Comics (not an actual title).

However, when you get the spotlight, others will try to take that spotlight for themselves, with the 1980s smaller comic companies were starting to rise, such as Pacific Comics, Comico, and Dark Horse Comics.

Then comes the 1990s. While the lesser known comic companies have faded away (except Dark Horse), Marvel and DC kind of started to even out. At this point and to this day, there really is no King of Comics (again not an actual title). They're both great companies. It's just that neither of them are better than one another. It's all just opinion at this point.

As for the future of comics, there really is much to be said. Up to this point, comics are still a part of media, with both Marvel and DC having their own cinematic universe and the ability alone to make movies. To end this I would like to thank you all for reading this entry of ¨Let's Talk¨. Have a great day, Excelsior! :)

October--it's the season for festive, fun, and fall-like surprises

by Aaron Peters

October is one of the most festive months of the year, and everyone has their own way of celebrating it. However, you might ask yourself, ¨What traditions are there besides trick or treating?¨ We present the Top 5 October traditions that you probably never heard of.

5. Punky Night

In the South part of England, children would carve pumpkins (punkies) into Jack-o-lanterns and get together in groups with their friends. They would also have Jack-o-lanterns and march through the streets singing songs, meeting other friends, and greeting rival groups, in which they would have a contest to see who has the best jack-o’lantern.

The tradition has been moved to Hinton St George, Somerset and is continued to this day.

4. The Grape Festival

This Luxembourg tradition is held in October and is said to be a Thanksgiving of sorts for a good grape harvest. Other towns also celebrate it but also in different ways. Schwebsange, for example, changes from water to grape juice that pours out of the fountain.

3.Yue Lan (Festival of Hungry Ghosts)

Hong Kong also has a Halloween tradition. On Yue Lan (Festival of Hungry Ghosts), it is believed that on Halloween night ghosts are able to roam the earth for 24 hours. Citizens of Hong Kong burn pictures of fruit or money, hoping the image will reach the spirit world and bring comfort to the ghost. Similarly, people of Hong Kong also light fires (safely) and bring food in order to calm ghosts that seek revenge.

2. Day of Dracula

Transylvania, Romania--it’s what seems like an ordinary castle during any other time of the year, but on Halloween, the castle changes. In fact, it´s the biggest Halloween party you´ve ever seen. People all around the world come to Romania to party at what is supposedly Dracula's castle. According to folklore, the legend of Dracula came from Vlad ¨The Impaler¨ Tepe.

1. Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work & School Day (Yes, this is real.)

Did you ever have a little stuffed bear when you were little? Well, thanks to this tradition, you can see him again after all these years. Celebrated on October 11th, the teddy bear tradition first started when Theodore ¨Teddy¨ Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear. When some fellow hunters had pinned it down, he replied, saying, ¨It's utterly unsportsmanlike.¨

Thank you all for reading and have a great October. :)

True or not, we love our fortune cookies

by Shelby Beneker

Everybody loves cookies, but there’s one thing everybody loves more: surprises! (Perhaps if someone asks Mr. Bundy, we can have some for lunch!)

So many people love these cookies, but do they know when they were invented, and who they were invented by?

Students tried to guess the tricky tale, but they had definite ideas or none at all; “I have no idea,” wondered Anna Hicks, grade 8.

David Rutherford, grade 7, stated, “I have no clue, maybe China?”

“I think fortune cookies can lie sometimes; once I got one that said that ‘you will seek passion’ but I didn’t seek any passion,” commented Savannah Williams, grade 8.

Did you know that fortune cookies didn’t originate in China? In the 1920s they were actually an idea by a small Japanese bakery called Benkyodo in San Francisco; the bakery is still open to this day.

David Jung, the inventor of the Hong Kong Noodle company, claimed he had invented the delicacy in 1918; as a result, the court attempted to settle the argument in 1983.

Some people say that Fortune Cookie Day is on July 20th, but others say it’s September 13th. In the long run, it’s just an excuse to have cookies!

Eighth graders Brooklynn Mays and Molly Littleton both admit to putting off what could be done today.

Many students admit to being classic procrastinators

by A. J. Denney

Procrastination is the act of delaying or postponing something intentionally, so a lot of people do it, either by mistake or by putting off the inevitable task. Whether or not people want to admit it, many people are procrastinators. So a few procrastinators commented on this harmful habit.

“I procrastinate when I get frustrated,” stated Colten Koger, 8th grader. “My math schoolwork just gets me so frustrated during the school day, so sometimes I step away and come back to it later.”

“The reason I procrastinate is mostly because I’m too busy doing other things, or when I’m tired.” admitted Mrs.Fultz, our library aide. “Usually I procrastinate at home, and sometimes I just procrastinate to avoid it.”

“Usually I procrastinate when I want attention, or when I don’t want to do anything,” responded Daxton Hendrick, 8th grader. “I procrastinate after school, and it’s usually because I’m doing things that I don’t want to do.”

“I procrastinate because I often don’t feel like doing chores,” stated Mrs. Rosemeyer. “I also do other things, like laundry, and I mostly procrastinate at home.”

“I procrastinate when I have math homework or when my mom wants me to water the plants.” replied Molly Littleton, an 8th grader. “It's usually at my house in the evenings.”

“I procrastinate mostly by hanging out with my friends,” commented Brooklynn Mays, 8th grader. “I’ll usually put off telling my friends if I’m going to show up to hang out or not.”

So next time, while you’re lounging on the couch trying to forget about that homework you may or may not have due tomorrow, remember that procrastination isn’t always the answer to everything.

Cadin Bowman, 8th grader, loves the idea of coffee ice cream.

Coffee ice cream most definitely doesn't appeal to Mason Brenton, 8th grader.

National Coffee Ice Cream Day baffles students

by Jay Schallick

September 6th was National Coffee Ice Cream Day. This is a day in which we celebrated the sweet treat of coffee ice cream.

“I'm not sure if it would taste good because I don't really like coffee,” remarked Max Dickey.

“It sounds like and odd drink/desert, but I think that it would taste good,” stated Brett Bischoff.

“It doesn’t sound very good, so I’m not sure if I would buy it if I saw it in stores because it doesn’t sound very appealing,” declared Makinzee Bradley.

Zach Hensley also stated, “If it was in stores, I wouldn't buy it without trying it.”

Cadin Bowman stated, “I’d definitely buy it if it were in stores since I love coffee.”

Currently, ice cream coffee can be bought in stores, in case you were wondering.

“If I had to pick between vanilla or coffee, I’d definitely choose vanilla,” exclaimed Karlee Roberts.

“Chocolate sounds a lot better than coffee ice cream,”declared Mason Brenton.

Coffee ice cream can be eaten and made in many different ways.

The first way it is eaten/made is in the form of ice cream. If you like your coffee cold, then this is the way for you!

Another way this treat is eaten is simple. All you have to do is fill a cup with coffee, then put a scoop or two of ice cream on top of it.

Next, add a little bit of caramel on top...and voila! You have coffee ice cream!

If you missed National Coffee Ice Cream Day, don’t worry: it’ll be back next year!

Movies' impact through the ages

by Aaron Peters

Old and new, life and fantasy, good and bad, horror and movies for children, real and animated--that's the magic of cinema. There are no known boundaries, except for the boundaries the director puts on the movie itself, and the movies we watch can have an effect on us as we grow.

It could give us a chance to look at the world in a different way or makes us laugh when we feel down.

While cinema has always found a way to appeal to different audiences, there will always be one thing unique to us all when talking about movies: our opinions our thoughts, feeling, likes, and dislikes towards the movies that we watch, and that's a good thing, because it allows us to express our feelings in a way that makes us comfortable and not in a way that makes us feel a lack of self-confidence.

We have come along way in cinematic history from the 1890s, where movies were just black and white, had no sound, and only contained still images to today--where movies are always in color, have sound, and generally look pretty good.

In that time we have had legendary movie directors come and go. Take Steven Spielberg, for example. He's famous for great movies in just about every genre--from the heart warming movie of E.T. to the thriller idea of Jaws, to his latest work in cinema for Ready Player One.

Even comics have had a history with cinema, such as the 2002 film Spider Man starring Tobey Maguire and even earlier in 2000 with X men with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

Cinema has been around for about a century, and in that time it has been through all sorts of situations and is still a major part of media to this day. Whether you like most movies or not, movies will always make you feel something such as happiness or sadness, terrified or curiosity, or maybe even inspiration.

Students can't wait until next year's Friday the 13th

by Shelby Beneker

When you hear Friday the 13th, what do you think of? Spiders? Witches? The movie? Some of the fears that FCMS students think about are varied.

“Jeff the killer, Jason, things like that,” Savannah Williams, 8th grader, stated.

“JASON!” screamed David Rutherford, grade 7.

Some people have superstitions but, what’s that? A superstition is belief in supernatural beings (aka- ghosts and such).

In 2018, there are two Friday the 13ths: April 13th and July 13th. There can be up to three, but usually there’s only one each year. The next Friday the 13th is September 13, 2019.

Even if Friday the 13 is popular, most people don't know the origin. “I don't know,” admitted Katie Mauntel, grade 8.

On Friday, October 13th, 1307, King Philip IV had De Molay and their followers to be arrested. This might be the reason everyone fears Friday the 13th: they might be arrested!

The Greeks and most Spanish-speaking countries believe Tuesday the 13th is an unlucky day. They believed that Tuesday was dominated by Ares, God of war.

However, the Christian belief is that 13 is an unlucky number because Judas, betrayer of Jesus, sat in the 13th chair during the last supper.

Although Friday the 13th might be a bit spooky, it’s still quite fun to joke around and have fun every once in a while!
