Critical Decision Points for Families of Children with DIsabilities

The "Critical Decision Points for Families of Children with Disabilities" curriculum is designed to assist participants in understanding four things as they prepare to make decisions for their student who receives special education services.
If you are not able to join us at one of the "face to face" sessions, you can also access the content via online training modules at the following link: I'm Determined - Parents - Critical Decision Points for Families of Children with Disabilities. There are a total of five modules that range in length from three minutes to five minutes, which can be completed in a single viewing or broken up over time to meet individual time constraints. They are self-paced learning modules and available to all. The curriculum for these modules are available in print and online. GMHS Band Information Night for 8th grade students and parents

This educational evening will include a collaboration of both the MEH 8th Grade Advanced Band Students, interested MEH students and the GMHS Band on Wednesday, February 5, in the GMHS Auditorium. While the evening is geared toward the rising 9th-graders, it is open to the entire FCCPS community including MEH and GMHS parents, and will be a rare opportunity to observe and experience the progression of skills in the band program. In particular, the chance for students and parents to observe rehearsals with a visiting clinician, and all that entails, is extremely eye-opening and inspiring.

Youth Vaping: What Parents Need to Know

Youth vaping has become a worrisome epidemic. Research shows that about 40 percent of adolescents have experienced vaping before graduating from high school. It is estimated that at least 20 to 25 percent of teens in Virginia vape.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

The FCCPS Special Education & Student Services Team, in collaboration with the Fairfax County Community Services Board, is proud to offer our next round of Youth Mental Health First Aid training to all staff and parents. This program will be facilitated by certified instructors from the Fairfax Community Services Board (CSB). The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including ADHD), and eating disorders.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help a student/youth/child who is experiencing mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people.
