Summary & Justification: This video produced by ING and UNICEF to create a better future for young people, interviews adults from around the world on what they think about adolescents. All of the responses are negative, even fearful for the future.

Then they show them videos of outstanding adolescents: scientists, inventors, athletes, future astronauts, artists, activists, and then ask the adults again what they think of adolescents. They are left speechless, with goosebumps and so is the audience. The camera angles, music, cuts from one interviewee to the next, are all intentionally crafted to effectively elicit that emotional response from the viewer.

In the end a few of the adults comment, "Y yo, ¿qué he hecho?" (And me, what have I done?) and "We need them more than they need us." This is similar to some of the comments from Ari and Dante's parents in the novel, but not necessarily in line with Ari or Dante's own perspectives.

Additional useful notes:

  • We recommend that this video be used as the basis of a free write, small group or whole class discussion on the various perspectives of adolescence.
