Girls Basketball

By: Jayne Skaggs

Recently, we finished up the season with another loss. I would be negative and say we didn't do as well as I hoped, but instead, we should look at the positive, the future.

We might not have done so well this year, but a lot of our courageous warriors were new to the game!

Next year, we can expect us to be way better before! We have grown so much, and continue to on a daily! I can't wait for next year because I am sure we'll do great.

The band ranges from Bass' from orchestra to Flutes from the band. They even have donuts at the end of the class!

MAP Rewards

By Emma Denning

Tis the season for MAP Testing! Not many students enjoy this, and neither do I. MAP Testing is a test - no duh - that gives you harder and/or easier questions in order to find your average.

This year, students are being rewarded for their hard work! If you are at grade level and/or go up on one of your tests, you get a drink or a snack! If you go up on both tests, you get a drink and a snack! You can also get your name put in drawings for prizes.

Try your best Winburn!

Boys Basketball

By Jayne Skaggs

The coaches are Mr. Vanderbilt Waye and Mr. Derrek Waye.

In order to try out, or go to an open gym- you MUST have your physical! It is the coach's job to make sure that you have the correct health and ability to help us win this year! Go get it now if you plan to try it out, and make sure to bring it in when doing any activities for basketball! Thanks!

As of right now, our school sports are going down, as in we don't have that many sports right now, but let's pick it back up soon and win!

Good luck everyone and I hope those who try out soon get on the team! Also, they have many tryouts, so don't get upset if you can't make it to one! They start soon, so be prepared.

This week, we have many open gyms, and don't be too surprised if tryouts start soon! Get your game-face on Winburn!

Are Warrior Weekends Worth It?

By: Dare Falade

Warrior weekends are when students can come to chill and do fun activities. But, the catch is you must have at least 80% Eos. Eos can be manipulated by teachers taking eos or giving it. You can lose eos by not following or schools POWER protocol. By the same token, you can gain eOS by following our school's POWER protocol. But do students actually care? Below is a poll of students that would want to keep eos up to be able to attend or not.

Worth it: 7

Not worth it: 0

Well, I guess the verdict is that kids think that they are worth it. Do you agree?

KYA

By: Dane Bishop

KYA is a club that meets on Fridays until 5:15. The 6th grade representative is Ms. Conde. The 7th and 8th grade representatives are Ms. Hicks and Mr. Donnelly.

Our KYA trip is this weekend! We went over the dress code for the trip last week. You will need two Business Casual outfits, and one Business Formal outfit. You should also bring some comfy clothes, as there will be some "fun time" at the end! Don't pack too much, as this year your suitcase has to fit under your table when you get to the hotel. Make sure to remember pajamas, cosmetics, and snacks!

Our representative for Governor is Vivie Johnson, and our representative for chair is Avneesh Kudrimoti. We know they will both do great, and are excited for the election!

We can't wait for conference!

Strategy Game Club

By: Jaye Beth Minner

Strategic Gaming is a club where you meet Wednesday from 4:15-6:00. The teachers who lead this club are Mrs. CG and Ms. Salas. You find different strategies to approach any type of game. Last week strategic gaming was canceled.

The game of the week is: Dungeons and Dragons. To play D&D you try to direct the actions of your character and interact with other characters in a role-play like game.

Nerd Squad

By: Jayne Skaggs

As you know, Nerd Squad and other clubs were cancelled due to Thanksgiving! That wasn't so fun, but this week was!

This week in Nerd Squad, we dissected mice! These mice are tested for almost everything we use today, there is a high probability that any medicine you have used has been tested on a mouse! These animals really help us get the set up of an animals body, and also is a big helper to being able to create a real life animal!

If you are ever into biology, or anything to do with the life of almost everything in our planet, learn more about it in nerd squad! Recently, one of our teachers majored in biology! Great job! Now, we are bringing in actual college students from UK to come and talk to us! Just like us, they learn too! Can't wait for more!

Winburn Dress Code

By: Jaye Beth Minner and Emma Denning

The Winburn dress code has been an issue for a while now with many of the students, and we feel that we need to address it. For one, a lot of us feel like the dress code is directed towards girls, and we’ve been told that it’s only that way because it might “distract boys”. What about the girls getting distracted when they have to wear pants, or incredibly long shorts, in the hot weather? It’s not only the shorts that are the problem. There are many other issues with the dress code including ripped jeans and sleeveless shirts. Not like spaghetti straps on shirts, but just shirts that don’t cover your whole shoulder, and it’s absurd. On the first page of the dress code, it says that people can’t wear winter coats during the school day, but what about the Hogwarts kids that have to go outside the school to get to the portables? We do understand that some students would take advantage of this, but not everyone. Then, there are the kids who take advantage of the dress code now, and the teachers don’t do anything about it, so it's honestly not even our fault.

One of the teachers here at Winburn was asked how they felt about the subject. This is their response. They said that it was, or used to be a lot more strict and that at least we have gotten somewhere. They said that all dress codes are inherently sexist, because of the fashion differences between boys and girls. They said she would like a decency code instead of a dress code so that it still stays somewhat decent. We also asked them what they thought about the fact that some students violate the dress code much more than they should, and don’t get in trouble for it. They responded with, It's not fair that the older students get to let it slide when they are wearing things that are not following the dress code and that it's not fair for the younger students who do follow it as well as they can.

With the dress code being structured towards girls, it’s teaching girls that they need to be scared of their skin showing, even if it’s just their knees or their shoulders. There are people around Winburn that are saying in order to solve the problem, we need uniforms. But, I don’t believe that’s true. We don’t need uniforms, we need a decency code, like said above.

A decency code is a ruleset that basically says that you aren’t allowed to walk around flashing people, or wearing anything that shows too much skin. Different peoples’ definitions of “too much skin” can be different. For some people, too much skin might be just showing your shoulders. For another person, it might be wearing a crop top. Students- all people not just girls- should be free to wear clothing of their choice. All that people should have to ask is for students to be wearing clothes that cover the vast majority of their bodies.

I know that when we started the year at Winburn, we had to go buy clothes that wouldn’t violate the dress code. Some students can’t afford to go buy lots of new clothes so they won’t get in trouble for the dress code. If we are a part of a community that forces students’ families to go buy new clothes so they won’t get in trouble, it’s not a community that we want to be a part of. Kentucky is one of the largest states for poverty to occur, and if there is anything we have learned while here at Winburn is that a lot of the students and teachers support claims like “equality for all”, and “education for all”. With Winburn making students purchase new clothes before the beginning of the school year, we might be making it harder on families that can’t afford such things.

Here at Winburn, there have been articles, and almost “uprisings” if you could say that, about the dress code before, and personally we haven’t seen anything happen from it. We’re not asking for people to agree with us, we’re asking for people to listen. We do know that the dress code is much less strict than it used to be, but there are still some things that could be changed, for the greater good of our students here at Winburn. We think that all dress codes are inherently sexist, but why can’t Winburn be the school to change that?

Thank you for your time, and have a great rest of your day.

New rules? Less EOS?

By: Jayne Skaggs

As you may know, new rules show that late or missing assignments have a cost of losing EoS, as well as forgetting necessary items for class also leading to loss of EoS. Many people say that it's not fair, but I think otherwise. Students are upset about losing a few Eos when they forget to do something, but all in all - it's their fault in the end.

First, I am going to say why this rule is in place. Teachers can not take points off of late assignments, which causes a lot of students to believe that there will be no consequences for turning in assignments late. One teacher had to grade an assignment that was turned in 87 days late. This is where they definitely had to draw the line.

This new rule that was presented to us was based on our POWER acrostic-poem-type set of guidelines. Turning in your work on time shows that you are working hard in school, and it will be graded. Just as late assignments still are required to be graded as submitted, without taking points because it's late. What they can do is remove EoS, for not working hard. Winburn needs students who can work hard and be respectful. As well as owning your own actions when you leave things at home.

At the end of the day, the rules are reflecting off of our actions. We got this Winburn. Remember to Own Your Actions, and Work Hard everyday! Can't wait to see you at the EoS rewards day!

House Points

By:Dare Falade

House points are points that can been given to each house if students follow POWER. There are 2 cups the month cup and year cup. The month cup is whichever house has the most points at the end of the month. Ravenclaw won last month, and the year cup is whichever house has the most points at the end of the year. Hufflepuff won last year. Whichever house wins the month cup, everyone in the house gets a prize and whichever house wins the house cup gets a party.
