Now that we have made it through the first week, Mr. McDaniel and I decided that it would probably be easier to just go back to what we were doing before the closure of school. We had originally assigned a writing piece from the performance assessment book, but we have decided to go back to reading The Diary of Anne Frank, which is located in your Collections textbook. Remember, you have access to your textbook using the handy student links from Morton's homepage. Your user name is your email address and your password is the same as what you use to log onto the computer. During your reading and answering of comprehension questions, please email me if you have any questions at all about the content of the story, vocabulary, etc. It is a little more difficult to be reading this independently than together as a class. If you struggle at all, please let me know. Here is your assignment for today -
Begin reading The Diary of Anne Frank, Scene 3 on page 292. Read to the bottom of page 297 and answer the following questions:
20. Lines 907–917: What does Anne mean when she responds to Mrs. Van Daan by saying, “Where would he be!” Which expression used by Mrs. Van Daan is hyperbole? (Remember, a hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration.) What does this expression reveal about Mrs. Van Daan?
21. Lines 976–993: What direct comments by the playwrights (dialogue) show Peter’s and Anne’s thoughts and feelings? What conclusions can you draw about Anne and Peter based on their actions, speech, and comments by the playwrights?
22. Lines 1110–1111: Who is “Pim”? How does each character’s use of the word vile impact their exchange?
23. Lines 1145–1147: What do the stage directions (words in italics) in these lines imply about the story that Mrs. Van Daan is about to tell?
