The link for the actual questions is at the bottom of this section so I hope you are reading this.
If you don’t follow these directions, you will NOT be allowed to retake!
I will always take your HIGHEST score! But, you only get once chance. PREPARATION is the key to doing well!
FOR RETAKING TESTS, DO ALL THIS:
1. Go back and COMPLETE (and keep up with) ALL of the formative assignments, class work, readings, whatever--basically every piece of paper you’ve ever touched in this class or at home. LEARN everything from those assignments! Not in a “I need to get this done so I can check it off” way but in a “I really need to learn and understand every single part of this for the remainder of my entire life” way.
2. At a convenient time (see "FABS"), show me 100% of said formatives. 100% done. 100% WELL done. Make the Acorn Packet a priority. If we can't find a time that works for you, Just email me and we can figure out something.
3. Ask questions if needed. You can do this at the end of ANY class period, or before/after school. ALSO, you can email me but don’t say “what do I need to do?” because that is what you are reading RIGHT NOW. Specific questions are fine like “Could I retake on Monday at 3:30?” Or “Do pastoralists also hunt?” because you can’t just look that up.
4. Check out the big list of study strategies HERE, then choose one or more to use. A lot. Prioritize the Acorn packet because that is where ALL the test questions come from. You can also use the resources HERE as well. Again, you need to REALLY learn this stuff and not just buzz through it. When you come to take the bold words quiz (see below), I will ask you which study strategy you used to prepare. If you don't have one, then we stop right there and you go back and study and come back when you're ready.
5. Take the verbal “BOLD WORDS QUIZ” at a time convenient for both of us (see FABS) I will ask you one or more questions about a major concept from the standard you want to retake. These questions will relate to the BOLD WORDS in that section of the AMSCO BOOK so study those. If you don't pass this quiz, then we stop right there and you go back and study and come back when you're ready.
6. At this point, I will write your "READY FOR RETAKE" NOTE. It is YOUR responsibility to keep up with the note! You CAN retake right then if we both have time, or you can go study and come back later if you want to. Just make sure you have the note!
7. Retakes are hard. They require writing. BUT, you already have the questions! They are in the front of each unit and also in bold throughout the Acorn Packet. The catch is you have to answer those questions just from your brain. No packets, books, phones, chromebooks, etc. Just an answer sheet and your brain. AND you have to do it with me or in ESS (see FABS for times).
8. For the next unit it would be better to do all this BEFORE the regular test, do better on that regular (multiple choice) test and avoid having to retake. But, hey, it’s your choice. Both options are always available, except on the final, which is FINAL.
9. Retakes must be done before the NEXT unit test. Don’t rush, because that’s usually a month away. Wait until you are ready! STUDY and know the stuff! BUT don't wait too long and forget everything. Also if you wait until the last day and don't have a study strategy to explain OR you fail the bold words quiz, then you waited too long and squandered your retake opportunities.
10. Approaching ALL of your learning with a “scrappy & hungry” attitude is always best! Take this seriously and make sure you really are ready because you don’t want to throw away your only shot! (Special thanks to Lin-Manuel Miranda for the clever conclusion. You didn't think I was going to plagiarize, did you?)
THE ACTUAL QUESTIONS FOR THE TEST RETAKES for FALL and SPRING
If you don’t follow these directions, you will NOT be allowed to retake!
I will always take your HIGHEST score! But, you only get one chance.
To resubmit ACORN PACKETS, DO THIS:
Remember that the Idea Development grade on the Acorn Packets is for, well, developing ideas. To do that you need details. There are some details that are critical for understanding the key concepts. They should be the MAIN IDEAS of your answer. For example, if you talked about the Byzantine Empire and never mentioned Justinian, you do NOT have enough details. Or if you talked about Christianity without mentioning the New Testament then you’ve left out a critical idea that is important to your understanding of Christianity and you won’t be able to compare to Judaism. So these are just two examples of the “SECRET WORDS” (they really aren’t secret–they are main ideas that HAVE to be in your answer-the name is sarcasm!). If you answer all the parts of the prompt, they should be in there! Doing 5 is just a random sample so the grading goes quicker. The only thing “secret” is which ones will be selected as the random sample.
If you get a bad grade on the Idea Development portion of an Acorn Packet, you CAN RESUBMIT. Before resubmitting, you should BEEF IT UP! That means ADD details (esp important ones) and make sure you have answered all the parts of every prompt (this is where most people go wrong). Then write "RE-GRADE" in giant letters on the front and put it in the drawer for your class. To grade it the second time, I will use a DIFFERENT list of “secret words” because the old words are no longer secret. The boxes with the original secret words are done, so the new secret words will come from OTHER boxes. Be sure you’ve done them all!
Don’t worry–if you get a LOWER grade I will just leave your HIGHER grade alone in the grade book.
It is a good idea to resubmit fairly soon, because the list of words gets harder as time goes by. I start with the easy ones but eventually we run out of easy ones. So don’t procrastinate!
1. Keep the paper with the comments on it! You only have to fix the parts you messed up, but if you lose the paper, you'll need to redo the whole thing. Staple the old one to the front and then new one to the back (or write at the bottom if there is space).
2. Before you rewrite, figure out what you did wrong. Often you can tell from the comments on your paper. Sometimes you have a buddy that did OK that can let you read theirs. Then fix yours. Then let me see it. If it is good, then you can get a note showing you are ready for a new prompt on the same skill.
3. You'll get a new (different) question about a very similar topic and using the same skill and over the same time period. You have to write that without notes, books, Acorn packets, etc. with Mrs. Williams or in ESS. That way you can show that you really have mastered the skill, not just copied off your buddy or the internet. See FABS for suggested times.
