Paid Experiences

If you are choosing to pursue a paid internship with one of our partners, please read through the descriptions of each opening below.  Please understand that most paid positions will give you the least amount of experience with the organization.  If you are a paid employee, it's expected that you report to work and complete all tasks assigned.

Plant Science Institute Experiences

Description: Intern will be in charge of maintaining the following: Greenhouse, Gardens, Raised Beds, Possible Bee Work, Labs, Greenhouse SalesDependable, Trustworthy,  Greenhouse knowledge preferred, some basic equipment operation knowledge preferred. 

Animal Science Institute Experiences

Animal Studies - Equine Studies - Food Science Studies - Pre-Veterinary Science Studies

Description: Our paid and unpaid internships are the same. Interns will be cleaning stalls, feeding horses, handling horses for veterinarians, opportunity to shadow directly with veterinarians. We have several divisions that interns can rotate through or focus on one - Reproduction (mares/foals/stallions), CEM Quarantine, Young Horse Development and Training, and Rehab and Fitness. Shadowing interns are not paid, but long term interns are paid. 

Description: Shadwell Farm is a thoroughbred horse farm in Lexington.  We primarily raise the horses until ready to be sent for training.  We would need an intern that is comfortable around horses, takes direction, willing to do hands-on learning to:  clean stalls, feed, water, and groom horses. 

Midway University

Description: Midway University Equine Program is an academic minded horse farm, seeking a driven, hardworking, inquisitive, and respectful student intern. Students in a paid internship will be responsible for horse care that could include but will not be limited to grooming, handling, turnout, basic wound treatment, stall cleaning, and more; as well as facilities maintenance including filling water troughs, stocking barns, repairing fences, and more. Students may be given tasks of successive difficulty as ability improves. Essential skills include: Efficient Communication, Critical Thinking, Basic Horse Handling, Driver's License, and Punctuality.

Description: Intern will complete farm and livestock chores at Locust Trace.  Applicants should possess the ability to drive or learn to drive various farm equipment.

Description: The Lexington Humane Society (LHS) is a non-profit organization. Among other things, LHS is the largest pet adoption agency in Central Kentucky. We educate the community on responsible pet care and the compassionate treatment of all animals, and we spay/neuter the pets of qualifying families at a low cost. Simply stated, we Give Love, Teach Love, and Adopt Love. LHS seeks enthusiastic, hard working, compassionate candidates for internship opportunities that assist departments including Animal Care, Foster Care, and Adoptions. Interns assist with animal enrichment, basic animal care, administrative assignments, and facility maintenance. Additional opportunities are available based on each student's engagement and strengths. 

Candidates must be team players who are positive and dependable. They must be comfortable taking direction, demonstrating follow through, and handling animals safely and compassionately. 

Description: CLI is a horse farm which includes boarding, breeding, sales and racing. We are looking for eager-to-learn student interns - paid or unpaid. Depending on the skills and wishes of the intern, the responsibilities will be either the equine group or the grounds and maintenance group. For the equine group, duties would include general care of the horses and cleaning stalls.

We are open M-F 8am-6pm

Saturday 8:30-1pm

General Overview:

~ We are looking for a support role, preferably a student with an eagerness to learn - and most importantly, a good attitude who is not afraid to work! We are fast paced and give a hands-on experience, which we hope is appealing to the student. If they plan to go to UK for pre-vet this could evolve into a longer position if it works out well! 

~ 8-15hrs a week at most

~ paid position - $8-$10 hourly (bi-weekly paycheck)


Support Role Duties:

~help restrain pets during appointments

~help clean bathrooms, treatment areas, exam rooms, kennels and surgery suites

~help upkeep clinic protocols

~trash duties

~restocking exam rooms

~surgery pacs 

~laundry rotation

~walking/assisting with Surgery patients (Set up of kennel, walking/cleaning kennels) 


*once student gets to a comfortable place we can talk about potential role/duties expansion; especially if they show a positive attitude.


Chamber of Commerce- Partnership WBL Program

Description: 

Required jobs will include: Taking pictures of students in all 3 levels, taking videos of students completing skills in all 3 levels, creating marketing materials from pictures & videos, creating a video about the skills students learn in each level, helping to facilitate learning inside the classroom & barn, creating materials for student use (copies, stapling, etc.), Tidying up barn before leaving each day.  Also providing daily care of horses, as needed and working with all equine instructors to help make their lives easier.


If desired, the intern may create & teach lessons, video demonstration of skills to use in class, act as barn manager during classes in the barn, put out hay into paddocks when needed, and check weather to see if horses need to stay inside during bad weather.


Applicants should possess the following essential skills: 

Ability to work with ALL students

Time management skills 

Able to teach students 

Description: A student in a paid internship should be able to work independently on a list of tasks that I have provided. This may include, but not limited to, checking the dog park (when finished) for any damage, holes, or repairs, picking poop in dog park and surrounding areas around the vet assistant labs, doing laundry, organizing bathing stations, scheduling grooming clients, bathing grooming clients, returning grooming clients with check out sheet, and cleaning/maintaining a tidy lab area. Other situations might include helping in lab if the class size is large. This would involve the student providing feedback to students in that course and helping with the skills they are currently learning. 

It would be preferable if they were a completer of all three levels of the program, but at least the first two (currently enrolled in level 3). They should have received a good score on their skills to be able to provide feedback in lab if they are working as a lab aid. Communication skills are key, as this student would be working with the vet clinic to schedule grooming clients. 

Environmental Science & Natural Resources Institute Experiences

Description: Candidate must be very detail oriented and willing to listen closely to instructions.  The candidate be personable and honest enough to ask questions.  There will be expectations    of meeting deadlines but I have a very good feel for the workload and time it takes to do projects, so plenty of notice will be given.   For land appraisal experience:  Research of land sales ( can teach) , drawing maps ( can teach ) , developing geographic and demographic area descriptions (Can direct to the places to get started) .   Specialized software used in  the appraisals is called AGWARE or UAAR.  interested candidate should get on the site and review what it is all about.   The candidate must have a reasonable conception of basic math.  Drawing buildings by hand and calculating the area is an example.   Note that appraising is about numbers and selling is about a great yet humble personality. 

Description:  Duties would include, Water quality assessments, cleaning fish tanks, moving fish, working with several different types of fish, processing fish, assisting with small tanks in classroom and harmony system, maintaining plants for the systems. Additionally for the wildlife classes we will periodically raise quail. Duties would also include care, handling and feeding of quail. 

Ag. Engineering Institute Experiences

Description: CLI is a horse farm which includes boarding, breeding, sales and racing. We are looking for eager-to-learn student interns - paid or unpaid. Depending on the skills and wishes of the intern, for the grounds & maintenance crew, duties would include mowing, weed eating, care of plants and flowers, maintenance type work like fence repair, barn repairs, machinery repair, depending on the skill level and desire to learn of the intern. 

Description:  Interns will do various outdoor chores, such as mowing, weedeating and general farm repairs and equipment maintenance.  Students should have the following essential skills: repairing and maintaining equipment, driving a tractor, mowing, and weedeating 

Ag. Communications Experiences

Description:  Intern will work with various staff members to complete a variety of  communications-based projects.  These may include, but are not limited to: managing the school's marquee, working with Mrs. Reed to prepare social media content, working with Mrs. Jones to prepare various recruitment materials, attending various recruitment events as needed.
