Liberal arts academy

There are many paths to success. The Liberal Arts Academy allows you to explore them all.

The Liberal Arts Academy is a gifted and talented program for students who are identified as gifted in three areas: language arts, mathematics and general intelligence.  The program is designed to provide a world-class education by challenging students to learn and work at the highest level across a broad range of disciplines, preparing students for an ever changing world.

The Liberal Arts Academy challenges its students in all core disciplines with required AP and Academy courses that are specifically designed or adapted for the Academy’s gifted population.  These courses combine acceleration, differentiation, and enrichment to stimulate and extend student learning. The required Academy courses of AP Research and optional Academic Mentoring offer opportunities for in-depth exploration and independent study outside of the typical classroom.

As part of the larger Henry Clay community, students are encouraged to take advantage of our many clubs, sports teams and activities to further their liberal arts education throughout high school. The time and opportunity to pursue these enrichment activities is a vital component to a student's well-being, personal growth and overall success. Whether it's through our internationally competitive Model United Nations Team, our state championship Speech and Debate Team, our outstanding fine arts programs or as a member of one of our many athletic teams, Liberal Arts Academy students are encouraged to pursue experiences that supplement their classroom learning, teach real world skills, and provide examples of future career paths. At the Liberal Arts Academy, we want your student to explore, learn and grow as they choose the best path forward to success.

"The ability to recognize opportunities and move in new - and sometimes unexpected - directions will benefit you no matter your interests or aspirations. A liberal arts education is designed to equip students for just such flexibility and imagination."

AP Capstone Diploma Program

Students in the Academy have the opportunity to earn the AP Capstone Diploma. The unique diploma program from the College Board complements our AP-focused Academy program, introducing AP courses that focus on the writing and research skills colleges want incoming freshmen to possess. All students take the required classes to earn the diploma, but whether they take and pass the necessary AP exams determines if they earn the AP Capstone Diploma. While the AP Capstone Diploma is not awarded until after graduation, students are designated on their college applications as AP Capstone Diploma candidates, signifying to colleges they are engaged in a rigorous curriculum throughout high school and have the skills colleges seek in applicants.

"The reason that Apple is able to create products like the iPad is because we've always tried to be at the intersection of technology and the liberal arts.

curriculum

The Academy curriculum is rigorous and AP focused. Students within the Academy take a minimum of 10 AP classes ranging across disciplines prior to graduation. The Academy program requires the most challenging courses offered in English, science, and social studies beginning with AP US Government and Politics freshman year. Students will also take advanced/AP math classes and pursue world language courses, but placement in these courses is based on the skills students possess as they enter high school and will vary among Academy students. Required AP writing and research courses make sure all students are well-prepared for the demands of college study.
