Girls + STEM + Gaming = Leaders

For girls* in grades 4-8, Girls Who Game (GWG) is an extracurricular program that offers an exciting opportunity for Fayette County Public Schools' students in Lexington, KY to learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through gaming. Global collaboration, problem-solving, and innovation are developed through learner-driven experiences geared toward empowering girls to becomes leaders in STEM-Related fields. The Girls Who Game program was created by Dell Technologies with partners Microsoft and Intel.

The FCPS Office of Instructional Technology first piloted the program in 2022 with three clubs and approximately 30 girls participating. Due to the success of that initial pilot, the program grew to 21 schools over 270 girls in 2023. We are excited to watch how our students continue to grow over time.

General Information

The program is made up of three levels:

Level 1: Culminating Challenge
Level 2: Junior Mentors
Level 3: Esports

Currently, all clubs in FCPS are operating at Level 1. Students start their journey by participating in a challenge which requires them to complete a team build in Minecraft. Clubs consist of 4-12 members and are led by a teacher called, Teacher Champion. To learn more about the Girls Who Game program, please explore the Google Slide deck provided here to the left.
