It is understandable that students, families, and educators will experience some level of anxiety as we return to our campuses after so much time away. The new routines and safety precautions will only heighten this feeling in some of our students. Review these resources to better support your student as they navigate their anxiety during this time.
Let your youth know that his nervous or apprehensive feelings about returning to campus are normal. Kids and adults have the "first day jitters". Letting your youth know that he isn't alone in this experience will help him to feel both heard and understood.
Expressing your understanding of your youth's emotions is of vital importance! Refer to these resources to better understand and practice empathy.
Establishing a routine and sticking with it is important for all of us! The predictability of a routine eases anxiety and reduces stress.
Morning Routine: The return to our school's campuses may require a change to your morning routine. Before the first day back on campus, discuss with your student what the new morning routine will be. Provide him or her with simple, well-defined expectations and consider having a visual schedule posted for easy reference. Make certain to offer specific praise for completing each piece of the routine.
Homework: Maintain a designated time and space for the completion of any homework.
Bedtime: Establish a bedtime routine and stick with it. Ensure your youth has adequate time to complete the routine and get an adequate amount of sleep. Like the morning routine, posting a visual schedule or checklist can be helpful and foster independence in your youth.
