Ms. Waterbury's Language Arts lessons - ( Work a little each day - Due by the end of the weekend)
April 13-19th, 2020
After reading pages 23 through 47 in Journey to the Bottomless Pit please choose TWO from the following six activities to do. All of the responses will be based on pages 23 - 47 in the book. Each of the TWO activities you do should be done in Google Docs or you can do them on paper and then scan them or take a picture on a phone and upload them to an email. These TWO activities are not due until 4/20.
The previous assignments I have given are not due until 4/15. If anyone needs more time, please know that I will not take points off your grade if you turn something in late. I am only interested in your skills practice, your attention to detail and your mastery of learning necessary to help you be prepared for 5th grade.
RI.4.9 L .4.3
Scan this article and find the part that tells about Fawn Hoof, the mummy that was found in Mammoth Cave. Compare the information about Fawn Hoof to what the book tells about her. You can do this by making a list or by writing a paragraph.
Enslaved Tour Guide Stephen Bishop
RI 4.3 L 4.3 L 4.4
Imagine you are Stephen Bishop and you want to tell your family about your adventure in finding the Bottomless Pit. Create an illustration of your perilous discovery and write a brief letter as though Stephen is writing to his mother about the experience. Think about what you would include in the description of your adventure. One or two paragraphs is plenty!
RI 4.10 L 4.3
In the book, on pages 36 - 38, there is a great deal of description about what Stephen and H.C. Stevenson see as they are exploring. Look at the video of Mammoth Cave attached here, and create a painting, sketch, collage or charcoal drawing of a section that you think looks like one of the images they describe in these pages. Then write one or two sentences using adjectives to explain what you have created.
RI 4.7
Make a list of the names given to specific parts of the cave. Which one would be your favorite to visit? Which ones are the most unusual? You should be able to find at least six names from page 23 to 48.
RL 4.7
Stephen Bishop created his map of Mammoth Cave from memory! That is amazing to me. See if you can create a map of SCAPA Bluegrass from memory. You will need to do two drawings, one of the upstairs and one of the downstairs. Be sure to label the rooms you have to go to when you are in class. Show where you enter and think about where the stairs would be. I think you will appreciate Stephen even more as you try to do this from memory. Have fun!
RI 4.10 L 4.4
After reading the short article about Stalagmites and Stalactites from the link below, write a sentence or two about the science behind these amazing formations. Use the information in the article to find images of some of the other formations mentioned, like “Straws”, “Curtains”, “Boxwork” and “Gypsum Flowers”. Try sketching some of these formation to share with me.
How Stalactites and Stalagmites Form
Remember, you only need to complete TWO of these activities by 4/20. Have fun on your adventure. I wish we could have gone to Mammoth Cave together, but at least we can share a video experience and try to imagine a young Stephen Bishop and all the wonder he must have felt as he found his way through the labyrinth of this incredible cave system!

Lessons for Journey to the Bottomless Pit by Elizabeth Mitchell
To do these lessons, please read the next three chapters attached to the Mammoth Cave tab on Mr. Beers’ website.
As you are reading this biography, please keep track of the 5 W’s for each chapter (who, what, when, where and why). Additionally, here some activities that I want you to do and share with me via Google Docs, Google Slides or through email. You may have to take a picture and upload it for some of the art, or have your parents help you upload a video if you want to share that way. Most importantly, keep up with the learning so that we can finish the year ready for 5th grade and confident that you haven’t missed out on important skills.

Figurative Language/Chapters 1 – 3 L.4.5 L.4.5.a
Find a least 3 similes and 3 metaphors per chapter and write them in an email or Google Doc. Choose one metaphor from each chapter and try to illustrate it or find a picture on line from Mammoth Cave to attach to an email and share it with me. This is a fun way to practice your art skills and make the learning more interesting!
Parts of Speech L.4.1 L.4.1.a
The following sentences come from the book, Journey to the Bottomless Pit. Please read them, and then create a chart like the one below, using words from the sentences. Notice the importance of the adverbs and adjectives used by the author in the story, to make it more interesting and give you a visual experience as you read it. Create your chart in Google Docs and share it with me or you may do it on paper, take a picture and upload it as an attachment to an email.
1. He had grown up in the state of Kentucky, and Kentucky is full of caves, from animal dens in the sides of hills to holes larger than a house.
2. The hill was made of layers of rock, but it looked as though many layers had fallen away, leaving a huge opening downhill from where he was standing.
3. Inside were a tin box filled with matches, some spare wicks for the lamp, a canister filled with more oil, and enough lunch for two men.
4. He said that skinny little crevice opens out into an enormous cave with a huge tunnel in the side.
5. He thought of the long summer coming, when the field slaves would have to toil outside even on the hottest days.
Adjectives
Nouns
Adverbs
Verbs
L.4.1.a
Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns within a sentence. Words like he, she, it, him, her, they, them, their, us, you, me, mine, etc. From the book, choose 6 different pronouns and tell the noun they are referring to. For example, in the sentences above, He refers to Stephen Bishop. Use the novel to find your information.
Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases
Before we begin looking for these in the novel, please read the following information carefully and look at the examples.
The list of words below are prepositions, and these are at the beginning of a prepositional phrase :
to, of, about, at, before, after, by, behind, during, for, from, in, over, under, and with.
When a prepositional phrase acts upon a noun, we say it is behaving adjectivally because adjectives modify nouns. A prepositional phrase that behaves adjectivally is called, quite logically, an adjectival phrase.
Example: The cat in the middle is the cutest.
When a prepositional phrase acts upon a verb, we say it is behaving adverbially because adverbs modify verbs. A prepositional phrase that behaves adverbially is called an adverbial phrase.
Example: To find the person who stole the last cookie, look behind you.
L.4.1.e
Now, let’s go on a scavenger hunt through your novel. In Journey to the Bottomless Pit there are many examples of prepositions and prepositional phrases. Please find 6 examples and type them into Google Docs. Notice why the prepositions are so important. What do they tell you about what is happening in the story.
Next, read the following excerpt from the story where I have left out the prepositions. How does this effect your ability to understand what is happening in the novel?
“____ every tour, Stephen began his talk ______the visitors filled their canteens. He told them that the temperature _______mammoth stayed the same all year round-_____fifty-four degrees. His visitors always asked ________the curious wind ______the cave mouth. Stephen told them that it always blew outward when the _______air was warmer than the air _______the cave. __ winter days, when the air _______the cave was warmer than the air _________, the wind blew _____the cave. His visitors murmured _____interest.”
Please respond to the following questions in Google Docs. You can copy and paste the questions to a new document and type your answers there. Be sure to use correct grammar, capitalization and punctuation in your answers, and be detailed and complete in your responses. You can quote from the book, but make sure you use quotations marks and tell what page you are quoting from at the end of your quote. I’m going to be looking for clear, well thought out responses that show me how deeply you understand and have thought about the text.
1. Considering the time period in which this story takes place, what are some of the reasons it is so unique that Stephen Bishop was in the position to be the tour guide for Mammoth Cave? _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. What are some of the character traits that Stephen possessed that made him a perfect candidate for his job? Explain how he demonstrated each of the traits you mention. (At least 4)
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
3. Tell me about the relationship between Stephen and Archibald Miller. What does this suggest about Miller’s character and what do you know about Stephen’s intellect based on their interactions?
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
4. Why does Franklin Gorin decide to sell Mammoth Cave? How do you think Stephen feels about this decision and why do you think this is the case?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
5. Dr. Croghan is from Kentucky, but how did he learn about Mammoth Cave? Why do you think he decided to purchase it and what do you think his first impression of Stephen might have been?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
6. What was Stephen’s first discovery and how did he find it? What was Gorin’s reaction to this discovery and how do you imagine Stephen felt about that? _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
