The Michelle P. Waiver is a home- and community-based waiver program of the Kentucky Medicaid program developed as an alternative to institutional care for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities (including autism spectrum disorders).

Services covered may include: case management, behavior supports/therapy, respite childcare (from provider you choose), home adaptations, and/or access to community therapeutic/recreational programs (i.e. swim classes, music classes, etc.).

1. Phone application:
Call the Michelle P. Waiver office (859-272-7483 Ext: 5107) and ask to speak to a Michelle P. Waiver “evaluator” (available Tuesdays/Thursdays from 10am-3pm). Someone will be able to guide you through the application process over the phone. Please have personal/financial information collected (see checklist below) before you call. Application process takes approximately 1 ½ hours.
2. Apply in person:
Call the Michelle P. Waiver office (859-272-7483 Ext: 5107) and ask to speak to an “evaluator” (available Tuesdays/Thursdays from 10am-3pm). Request an appointment to meet with a Michelle P. Waiver in-house evaluator for the purpose of completing your application. Please have personal/financial information collected (see attached checklist) before you arrive at your appointment. Application process takes approximately 1 ½ hours.
3. Online application (NOT Recommended):
See attached checklist (pdf) for information you will need to gather to help you through the application process. Once you have gathered your documents/information - click on the following website to begin your application: https://benefind.ky.gov
If you already have Medicaid you will choose “Let’s Get Started” which will allow you to set up an account with your Medicaid information. If your child is not currently covered under Medicaid or you are unable to find your Medicaid number for any reason - choose “check eligibility” and follow the application prompts.

Once your initial application process is complete, you will be placed on a waitlist. There is a lengthy waitlist for Michelle P. Waiver applicants. Please do not let your “number” discourage you from this process. Families may be granted access to the waiver in groups at a time. Once you receive your waitlist “number”, please follow up with a call to the Michelle P. Waiver Office (859) 272-7483 (ext. 5107) and ask about “State general funds for families on the waitlist”. Some families will qualify for funding during the waiting process – so please call and ask if this applies to you!
