Bioinorganic

Materials Lab

Living organisms build solid inorganic structures that serve a variety of functions, ranging from mechanical support, protection, gravity receptors, mineral storage, to magnetic field perception. Dr. Merk’s group focuses on improving our understanding of biological crystal growth in complex organic matrices. In addition, her lab seeks to develop sustainable synthesis protocols that emulate mineralized structures in the biosphere.

Dr. Merk’s group investigates

  • natural biomineralized structures,

  • biomineral model systems,

  • bio-inspired composite materials for engineering applications,

  • microstructural and chemical imaging techniques.
