These pictures represent the collective experiences of the student artists involved in this project. They are not representative of all views nor are they intended to criticize the actions of faculty, staff or other students. They represent perspectives on how to improve the university experience for students who may experience or know someone who is experiencing housing insecurity.

I went to a trail nearby and sat on some of the benches along the trail. I haven’t got to the point of sleeping on a bench, but I know others who have. One of my biggest fears is not having a place to live.
Alternative: Stable housing is a big concerns for many students. The housing market in Boca Raton adds to this stress.
Call to Action: Hire a case worker at FAU to help students who are in need of housing.

Every time you move to a new dorm, you have a different mailing address. On campus housing is limited, so whenever a place becomes available, I have to take it. This means that every three or four months, I have to change my address so that I don’t miss important documents.
Alternative: If you rely on campus housing completely, you will have to constantly change your address. This also means that you may miss important documents if they were sent to an old address.
Call to Action: Provide students the option to have year-round housing. Alternatively, give students the option to have a four-year P.O. box.
It would be nice if we didn’t have to move from dorm to dorm. It takes some time to make a dorm a home. Once we are able to get settled in one place, we have to move.
Alternative: Findings housing is stressful. If you are able to get a place on campus and want to stay the entire year, you have to pay $520 for transitional housing to stay 9 days between spring and summer semesters. If you don’t get housing, you have to try to get somewhere off campus. Many of the places within a 5-10 mile radius that are affordable have stipulations (e.g., 28 years old) that prevent students from finding stable housing.
Call to Action: Partner with apartment complexes to get housing contracts for students, similar to what Florida Memorial did for their students. Make these contracts accessible to students. Constructing more dorms is great, but many students cannot wait until 2026 for a place to live.

Even when things are completely dark in your life, always look for the light. That light could be different for different people. For me, personally, whenever things got really bad, my faith always keep me going.
Alternative: It is easy for everything to pile up and pull you further and further into a dark space, especially if you’re not willing to look for something to bring you out. Even if you feel like you don’t deserve to be brought out of it or like no one will help you out of it. There is always a way out.
Call to Action: Find ways to remove barriers for students seeking help. Sometimes students feel like they don’t deserve campus support or will not be helped when they seek it.

Here I am turning strawberries into jam. This is not only an act to make food healthier but is also my boycott of society.
Alternative: Access to food on campus is not always equitable. If you're dining in, you're more likely to get more food than if you get a to-go box. But sometimes you just don't feel like sitting there.
Call To Action: Provide training for food workers to provide the same food in to-go boxes. Some students use this food to survive.
These are pine needles. I got them for free on the Nextdoor App. I had to take an uber to get them but it was worth it! You can make your own olive oil and can also use them for cleaning.
Alternative: Some students have to be creative in order to make ends meet, especially in the summer when the cafeteria is closed and access to kitchens are limited.
Call To Action: Create a summer meal plan. Create a community food garden.

During the summer and holiday breaks, there are less resources on campus. The resources aren’t there because a majority of students are going back home, and then you have people like myself who are still here, and we miss out. The cafeteria is completely closed; the gym cuts hours. Going to the gym is essential.
Alternative: Resources like the cafeteria are completely closed during the breaks; the gym has shortened hours. Students who use FAU for year-round housing rely on these services.
Call to Action: Provide access to resources during breaks. The services can be reduced, but do not discontinue them. We are already struggling to make ends meet. The lack of services during a time when we need them most feels like we’re being forgotten.
Doing laundry after work should be easier. A lot of times, you just gotta get lucky. Sometimes you’ll get a washer that’s open and then you turn around and all the dryers are taken up. Or you go to do laundry and two of them are out of order. Each residence hall is different, but that happens pretty often at UVA.
Alternative: Doing laundry is more difficult for working students who don’t have the luxury to come back at a different time.
Call to Action: Add more washers and dryers to the dorms. Schedule regular maintenance.
We are like the fire. We can be hot, dangerous, vibrant, and burning but so easily put out. You have to sustain the fire to keep it burning. The destructiveness of the fire can last for a long time but can just as easily disappear in an instant. This fire is like our lives. Our problems seem like they’re always coming. Then, there are a few glimpses of happiness and joy sprinkled in. That is what I hold onto.
Alternative: While there are many resources at FAU, there are also a lot of barriers to accessing these resources. Remove the barriers preventing students from sustaining their fires. For example, some students use a friend or acquaintance’s address so that they don’t have to keep changing it as their situation changes. This may mean that access to other resources like food stamps may not be available because the people living at this address don’t need or qualify for assistance. Similarly, some students qualify for work-study but sometimes can’t access it due to the cumbersome process. So, they have to find job resources elsewhere.
Call to Action: Streamline the work-study job process. Provide a permanent P.O. box for students.

I love running. I used to run for Keiser. When I transferred to FAU, I wanted to join a running club, but there wasn’t one. If I even did a running club, it would be something special.

I was in my car waiting for my laundry to be done. In my car, it feels like I’m on my own island. As I was waiting here, I contemplated my life and my position in life. This picture shows different perspectives.
Alternative: I have never been out of the state. Opportunities for study abroad and other activities that interest me feel so out of reach.
Call To Action: The tuition waiver should cover more fees for school, like study abroad.

We will all know peace or rest when we die.
Alternative: We shouldn't have to wait to have peace; why is my journey a struggle? Quiet places on campus for prayer and meditation are not advertised enough or accessible all the time. Moreover, they are always doing construction on different floors in the library-it is never quiet enough.
Call To Action: Provide more calm spaces for students to pray, meditate, and relax. Or, give us AirPods pros with noise cancellation.

I started working at the FAU challenge course in August. It was hard for me to take that job at first because I am not an adventurous person. So even working there was a challenge. But, I adapted and I am comfortable there now. It was a big change from when I first started working there to now. I can now look around and embrace the space.
Alternative: I took this picture at the FAU challenge course at 8:00pm as the sun was setting. At night, you cannot tell what is in the background but during the day you can see the obstacles in front of you.
Call to Action: Being comfortable in a space takes time but it is helpful to know the obstacles you face. Build a community that can embrace people from all walks of life.

When I got my dog, he wasn’t really for me. He was for someone else, but I ended up getting him because they weren’t able to take care of him. I can say that taking care of someone else actually helps you take care of yourself. When you know someone depends on you, it makes it less likely that you will give up on yourself.
Alternative: A lot of students who struggle with housing feel like they are on their own. There are a few places that can provide an escape. Students like us don't always have family support, and we benefit from building peer networks.
Call to Action: Support organizations on campus for students who have experienced homelessness to build networks; fund part of Champions.

Overcoming the odds is possible, but it can also burn you out.
Alternative: It is not always visible when someone is getting overwhelmed and needs help.
Call to Action: CAPS should periodically call students who use the waiver to check-in.
