A story told by the perspective of a two-year old cat name Poka Spot
The big bright thing is up again. The Big One and the two Little Ones are awake. The other Fluffs and I have been awake; we wake up a lot to play. I play, and the Other Fluffs sometimes play, too. However, Garen-the Striped one with the tail, does not like playing. He opens his mouth and makes a scary noise.I do not like the scary noise, so I make a silly noise and run away. He is old, so he does not follow. Most of the time, anyway.
Oh, I am a Fluff! I have short hair, a lot of it is black and some is white. I have a pink sniffer. My tail has a white dot on the end. I like to chase. I have pointy ears and my voice is really loud. I am small but I am loud. I like talking. I talk to Big One, Little Ones and other Fluffs. I have a lot to say. Sometimes other Fluffs do not like this. They try to be louder than me, but they lose. They try but they are not as loud as me.
I have a kin Fluff inside the Big One’s square nest, named Smith. He makes scary noises too. He chases me, but I am small and I run really fast. I like to jump on the tall thing and sharpen my nails. The Big One does not like it when I sharpen nails on better wood tall things in the square nest.
The other Fluff I like is Uncle Buck. He is fun and way bigger than me. We chase each other, but sometimes he plays too rough. The Fluff that is striped with a stumpy tail is Shika. She is old, and Big One likes to spoil her and talk to her. Shika sounds weird. I do not sound weird. I am loud.
I really like the Big One and Little Ones’ food. The Little One with orange hair gives me food. I get excited and try to join them at the tall wooden flat thing they put their food bowls on. Big One and older Little One do not like this and tell me to get down. I do not understand, I just want to eat food up there with them, too. Garen says it works for him. Garen is old and spoiled, and he taught me how to get human food. Sometimes I trick the Big One.
Big One and Little Ones leave after they wake up. Little Ones get food bowls with milk in it. I want the milk, but they do not give me it. I tried asking nicely and even tried being loud. It does not work. I try to sit with them on the wooden things. It does not work. I try to get their attention with my paw and make cute noises . It does not work. I wait until Big One and Little One leave the eating room. I jump in a big white thing with food holders in it. There is no more food but the big white empty thing sometimes has water. Water is scary. I try to help clean the food holders. So do the other Fluffs. Big One and bigger little One does not like this. They tell me to “Get down”. I do not understand, I get some food because Little Ones do not empty their food bowls. I am also helping clean. The Big One sometimes confuses me.
The Big One and Little Ones leave home after changing their fur. I do not understand why they change their fur— It is weird. I hear Big One say, “we are late, we need to go.”I do not know what “late” is, And I do not know where they go. Little Ones have bags on and Big One has metal jingles everyday. The big thing shuts, which is how they get into the square nest. When they leave, I help
clean the Little Ones food bowls. The Big One does not know but I know the Big One will thank me eventually. I will keep trying to help. Sometimes I forget what I did when the Big One tells me ‘no’. I forget a lot. I am good and listen to the Big One when the Big One is talking.
When the big bright thing is almost high in the blue thing up there, the Fluffs and I take a nap. We like to nap! This is how I can play later when the big bright thing is gone. It is fun to play when the Big One and Little Ones are napping. Smith gets to go with the Big One during naptime. This is not fair; the Big One has things that can be knocked down and played with! Uncle Buck and Pumpkin get to go with Little Ones, too. This is not fair. I am stuck with old Garen and stumpy Shika. They want to take a long nap when the bright thing is gone. They are not fun. When I try to play with them, they get mad and make scary noises .
Pumpkin is the fluffiest Fluff we have in the square nest. She is a little old, but will still play. She also grooms me, she would make a good mom Fluff. Pumpkin takes care of all the Fluffs. I heard Pumpkin is the bigger Little One’s “cat”. I do not know what the word “cat” means. I think that is the Big One and Little One word for Fluff. Fluff sounds better.
You know what I like? String. Anything and everything with a string. I like to play with fun things on the floor that Big and Little Ones forget about. The littlest one likes to give me small round things that make noises on the ground when I play with them . When the big bright thing is gone, I like looking for small things to play with. Sometimes I wake Big One from their long nap when the bright thing is gone. I am sorry but I am having fun. I wait, then I play again. Sometimes the Big One wakes up again.
I also like the big thing Little Ones and Big Ones stare at. It is in the biggest space in the square nest. Sometimes it is boring because Big One and Little Ones will not do anything besides stare at it. I hear sounds coming from it. I think it is how Big Ones meow at each other. This is weird because staring at Fluffs means challenge. Why are Big Ones and Little Ones starting to challenge? It is confusing and mostly boring. Sometimes, Big One finds Feathers, Squeakers and Swimmers for us to stare at. I am excited but confused, how does Big One put live animals in big flat things? I jump up to the flat thing and I try to catch the Feathers, Squeakers and Swimmers. Big One and Little Ones laugh at me. I am embarrassed! I am trying to catch them but I can not!

I have had cats my entire life.I have always wondered how the world would look to a cat. This piece is dedicated to one of my family’s cats: Poka Spot. Spot is going to be two years old soon. His age was used as inspiration to give Spot a perspective and voice in my creation.
